Finished my foam baot
      #167844 - 11/11/08 05:35 PM

I built this little foamer last summer and never got around to glassing it. Planned on glassing it this summer but still couldn't find the time. Finally got some time and started glassing a couple of weeks ago when it was warm. Ended up just getting the bottom done before the rain and cold set in. Uncovered it and brought it in the kitchen the other day and finished it off. Shes 11' long by 4' wide and has a tunnel hull. Not sure what it weighs at this point but I can lift it ofer my head easily. Heres a progression of from start to finish.

Nope, it is thin cotton flannel. I glassed it down just like another layer of fiberglass cloth. It really toughened it up too.

Boat looks great. And if you got a woman that lets you build a boat in the kitchen....better keep her!!

Nice work dude! Looks great. The flannel was another great idea you have come up with that will soon be seen at many koolaid stands statewide.

Thanks, but I can't take credit for the camo idea. I saw another boat on the refuge that was done this way. I think he used a different material, like a camo mosquito netting or spun polyester or something. I saw another one that was done with a thin flat finish cotton. That guy put his on with contact cement. I liked both ideas but was worried about the first one being too shiny and the second one not holding up well enough. The reason I chose flannel is because it has a brushed surface that is slightly fuzzy. By using only enough resin to saturate the nap leaves a slightly textured surface that is not shiny. I was pleased with how it came out, but the bottom line is it's really just for looks. The ducks are never gonna see it anyway since it will be completely grassed up.

I'm sure it would work but would take a tremendous amount of resin, plus add a lot of weight.

The epoxy I used is nearly odorless. You practically have to stick yer whole face in the mixing pot to smell anything and even then it very subtle and remenicient of aloe vera. The little woman didn't mind at all, although I suspect it had more to do with the fact that it got her out of cooking for a couple of days.

I was kinda wondering the same thing Shawn ----did you ever clear your private message box yet ?
I'm either repairing my baot (pat. Pending) or selling or donating it to charity; tired of paying PP taxes on boat motor and trailer and not using it.
My kitchen is a wee small for my baot ------maybe the living room --hmmmmmmmmm--
