Spring Tom Season
      #200560 - Thu Feb 25 2010 08:18 PM

Getting closer , I might fore go my usaul practise of trying to score an Old tom turkey with my bow this year , the areas I've been hunting last few years the population of mature toms has dropped -----maybe should quit killing them--that might help !--

Don't say that; someone will call for beard restrictions.

They already have them. "Must have a visable beard to be a legal turkey."

I guess they could regulate how long the beard has to be

"Stopping" killing em may not be a problem this year.

All the places where I've seen 50-200 bird flocks every past winter... this winter some had 20-30, many had a handful or NO birds.

That's up here on the north side, of course.

For a good while, there were wayyyyyy too many of em around here. But now I think they're gonna be back to more of a trophy bird status after the last couple of poor spring hatches, and now the heavy whammy of this winter (70+ days of deep snowcover, -15 cold, etc).

We shall see.

Well were feeding both the turkeys and quail up on the land I hunt . Seeing a fair amount of jakes and hens but fewer poults every year because what Scout mentioned above. Toms already have a "trophy bird status" anywhere I hunt them !---

For several years, you could kill a "trophy tom" along any hedgerow up here. Won't be that way this year.

Stoner, I expect you consider starlings and sparrows to be trophies, so have right at it LMFAO. Last trophy tom I killed was with the pickup.

But I did kill 24 trophy crows yesterday, btw.

None banded

Stoner,
Here's my sincere advice on passin up turkeys.....If you eat em, kill all ya can including a jake every now and again (they don't count in your limit). Mother nature is gonna determine how many turkeys are on your place from year to year, not legal methods of killen em.

Oh, and as far as shootin em with a bow, i would suggest goin bow fishin and try harpooning a whale with it first---Makes about as much sense.

Well never shot a crow in my life --I've eating a lot of crow on here --they don't taste good-- - I havn't yet tried those special purpose broadheads yet (Gullitine or Bullhead) where they are designed for a head/neck shot to take a turkeys head off . I heard of the two the bullhead is much tougher and reuseable without having to replace the blades after every shot, and they don't plane after 20/30 yds . I could try whaling with the regular broadheads , but never again will I shoot at a turkey with them . AAaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr--there he blows ; the great white turkey ! Probally turkey farms would be a good place for to look for them ?---

Well thought about what you were saying -- --and decided that this year was the year I got my turkeys with a bow anyway ! -- -- Had too wait till the last two days of the season , killed two nice Toms at around 6:30 am both mornings. They flew down straight off the roast landed close . I was using a broadhead called a "Turkey Spur" it did the job ; and was no chance they were getting up and running off after the arrow hit them tipped with that broadhead--
