Alright, Ifinaly have private land to hunt. This land I can hunt anytime and only have to share it with one other person except gun season then his dad hunts with us. It is aprox. 230 acres and we are only paying aprox. 600 bucks. We got it for free last year and took 3 deer and seen many more. This year we are working with a friend to put in about 3 acres of plots. There are about 120 acres of corn.I know the money for the lease is a good deal. But what are some suggestions on the plots as far as what to plant. And time lines.Oh and what trail cams do you like.

are you bow hunting, cause it will be hard to draw away from the corn early in the season...might set up between the corn and bedding area...
if you are putting in plots, cut the area down now, wait a few weeks and spray it, then a few weeks later disc it...get soil samples asap...lime...
I would plant a mixture of red and white clover with winter wheat...then overseed with clover again late winter...that would be a decent plot that could last you a number of years...gonna have to fight weeds for some years, fescue if that is what you have there now...
if you seed clover, make sure you get the right fertilzer, clover doesn't need nitrogen....if you want a plot just for this fall, brassicus is the way to go..
either way, plant late August, early September...

also, I would establish at least 3 mineral licks asap...the rock or whatever it is called has a good reputation, just throw it in a depression near heavily traveled trails...
good deer cams can be had for about $100...I have had good luck with the Moultries (sp)...just get a few memory cards and swith them out everytime you visit...trail cams over a mineral lick ought to get you plenty of pics...
hope this helps!

Whatever you do - DO NOT FORGET TO RESPECT LANDOWNER!!!!
EVEN IF THE LANDOWNER SHOWS YOU NO RESPECT IN RETURN
Also, once you get in, demand that all hay areas be turned into row crop within the next 12 month period or it is a violation of the leasor/leasee agreement.
That should get you on the right track...just sayin.

What does the landowner's wife and or daughter(s) look like? That's important! I'm just sayin'...

Salt and mineral blocks are attractive to deer no doubt. But wouldn't be better off if you got some of that Purina mix for deer that has some calcium & phosphorus as well as other minerals? I'd think you guys would do that to help increase the rack size in the local buck population.
BTW, not really a deer hunter anymore, but I can see where trace mineral nutrition would be something yall would do.

Little late getting here but what is time. I would agree about planting in BRASSICUS by the middle of August. I used Whitetail Institute products. They are a bit pricey, but have never been disappointed. The lime and right fertilizer is important. Had it in the ground last year and it was 2 ft. tall. As soon as the first frost hit, the deer were in there eating the leaves. During the winter until the middle of Feb. they had eaten the stalks right to the ground. I have 2 Moultries and 2 Recons. Both good. Just have to remember to turn them back on after switching cards. Guilty. Take care.
