If you're like me, you're old and fat. You're also making the most of the cold weather by sucking down black beers.
If so, DO NOT overlook Piney River's "Old Tom Porter". I've wandered over to Sierra Nevada's porter, Deschutes, Founders, Boulevards, etc. and they are all a distant second to Old Tom. Thanks for reading.

I sent him an e-mail to the last address I had for him. I'll let you know if he replies.
I agree Forsythian, I enjoy some dark beers this time of year. I just finished brewing a smoked porter and a chocolate porter.
Smoke is kegged and is great. Chocolate is still aging.
Merry Christmas to y'all!

I'm back and I'm fine - thanks for your concern, fellers.
About those Porters - I'm enjoying that Mother's Winter Grind has appeared in stores again. It's more of a Stout, I suppose, because of the roasted barley content - and it's adulterated with coffee to boot. Because it's so doggone good, though, I've waived my "no foo-foo beers rule" for that one.
And so far as brewing porters, I've believed for years that Charlie Papazian's "Silver Dollar Porter" recipe from the New Complete Joy of Homebrewing produces one of the finest beverages known to man. I'll have to try an Old Tom.
Merry Christmas, everyone!

I picked up New Belgium Portage Porter last night. I've always liked porters. My favorites used to be Leinenkugel's Vanilla Porter and Boulevard Bully Porter, but this beats them all to hell.
