St Louis Post Dispatch 2013 Chef of the Year
Nominated for the (National) James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year (big time stuff)
The weird and best part of this? It's a little neighborhood type place. Nothing fancy. Down home cooking. I'm talking down home and outstanding. Without spending a fortune. Check out the menu.

I'm a hound for fried chicken so I ordered it. It's the best in St. Louis. And the mash taters with white gravy? Holy chit. $13.
Odds are you'll meet Rick, the chef. He came out to thank us for being there. bwaaaa....He had that azz backwards. Super nice young guy who clearly gives a hoot about what comes out of his kitchen.
I'm tellin ya, you ain't gonna miss with this place.

For me anyway?.....no comparison. Don't get me wrong, I can do Hodaks and be happy.
This crust was a mild flavor, not over crispy, not over stated or spiced. The breast and thigh were quite different from one another, more so than usual. And maybe the biggest factor in judging....the meat was cooked perfectly.
If you're one of 20 around the country nominated for one of the Beard awards you have to be doing a lot of things in extraordinary fashion. And you can taste it. To get that on a menu like this is a rarity.

Now if you say it is better than Hodacks, I will give it a go. I haven't eaten anything fried in a few months but the Lent fish fry's and a lead on chicken better than Hodacks will certainly ruin that run... My office is in South City so this wouldn't be hard to try for lunch...
If you ever get down to Memphis, you gotta try Gus's Fried Chicken on Front Street and/or Uncle Lou's by the airport. Both will make you want to smack your mama!!!

I assume you hit Blues City Deli as well?
I drive by Hodaks all the time to go there. bwaaaaa
Lemme know what you think of Quincy's chicken...somehow I'm gonna pass on that a few times to try his burger and that country fried sirloin. I'm sure it's all gonna be very good.

Hodaks chicken is just ok. Try Pat's bar on Tamm and Clayton across from Forest Park. Way better than Hodaks IMO. Frank and Helens on Olive just east of 170 also has some dam good chicken and pizza.

When Blues City first opened, I was there once a week or so, for about a year. Once it started getting stupid crowded, I was lucky to get there once a month. Now I drive by once in a while, see the line on the sidewalk and go to Southwest Deli or Gioias on The Hill. The only time I eat Blues City is when I am eating a late lunch and don't eat lunch until 1:00 or later.

Have not tried that. It will be on the list now. When I venture into that area, I usually hit Carl's, on Clayton Rd. for some pastrami on rye. If you haven't had that, get there!! It is a heart attack waiting to happen but it is to die for!!

I most always get there around 11:00. I'm still on the sidewalk but it takes 10 minutes to get the order in and 5 more to get your food.
People are there for a reason. All the good places have a crowd. Hit O'Connells on Friday at 11:00 for the Guinness battered fried fish...no crowd then but dam......that fish tasted as good as if it were noon. bwaaaaaaaa

That's the way they cook it at Frank and Helens on Olive. It comes out very crisp with no grease.

Not sure if what I had was "Broasted" or not but I've had fried chicken made in a prssure cooker, deep fryer many times. I think Broasted is a brand name and method. Other companies have copied their cookers and now there are several brands. A lot of the K of C, VFW, Moose, Elks and other such halls do it that way and it is usually pretty good. But it is just like deep frying, with regard to seasoning, proper temps, etc... If you know what your doing and get it all right, it's some damn good stuff... We have an ol' boy at our K of C Hall that has it wired. In fact I ate a few pieces Saturday, while BBQ'ing for an event...
Of all my talents, skills, intellect, etc. (this list could go on and on ), Frying great chicken is not one of them... I can to an adequate job with my iron skillet on the stovetop but nothing is better than chowing down on some goooood fried chicken made by the folks that do it best!!
It is now 10:30 AM and all this is making me hungry. I brought a lousy tuna salad sammich for lunch. It may have to stay in the frigde and a trip to get some fried chicken may be in order today...

Rick Lewis, chef at Quincy has opened a new chicken joint called Southern
He's in it with Emerson of Pappys and his place adjoins it.
I said Quincy Street was maybe the best fried chicken in town then but now Southern has it hands down. Puts Gus's to shame too.
Side dishes are killer good. Try it.

Have you tried Gus's in Maplewood? Opened a few months ago. I've not been yet but I've been to the original in Memphis and went to the one in downtown Little Rock about a year and a half ago.

I've been to Gus's. It's an excellent somewhat spicy chicken. Really good, Tennessee style.
But their sides are no better than KFC, imo. Really dumb.
Southern puts Gus to shame. The chicken is better with a lot more options and there is no comparing the sides. If you're gonna spend $10 or $12 on a fried chicken lunch you might as well enjoy all of it.
