I have never even shot a lever gun but got a hankering to get one this year. Working on a dude with a LNIB 1895 with a Bushnell Banner 1x4x32 scope. It will be a decent price and still give me some room to play.
From Brownells, I can get an XS Lever gun Scout Mount for $35. My goal is to get a decent long eye relief scope and make it into a Scout Rifle. Always wanted one ever since the whole Jeff Cooper Steyer Scout project, but didn't have the $$.
Being a 45-70 in a short lever action rifle, it's not like I'm going to be shooting it a long distance, so the low power scope will be just about perfect.
Should look something like this when done:

The looks of the forward mounted scopes takes some getting used to, but I like that one pictured. Will yours have that type of stock? I like synthetic much more than wood.

The 45-70 isn't exactly a 1000 yard shooter. You have it set up right.

picked up the rifle yesterday, will be ordering the mount and back up sites this week. Still have to figure out which way I'm gonna go with the long eye relief scope. Go cheap to see if I like it or get a higher priced Leupold, Burris range scope. Big difference in price for an experiment.
Will stick with wood stock for now.

Did you get a standard 1895 or a Guide Gun? Out of that strong Marlin action, the 45-70 can be pumped up a lot.

This one is the 22" barrel, not the guide gun. That will be the next one.

Came close to buying a guide gun in 45-70 a couple of years ago but the guy wanted too much for it and wouldn't come down to a reasonable price for its condition.
My .444 has the 22" barrel. It is the only rifle I have that with my handloads you know exactly when you squeeze the trigger, even when hunting. It has substantial recoil.

I killed my first deer with a .444 Marlin. Nice rifle.

Dealer priced guns for everyone !!!!! YEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHH
your profit margins are so forked
But if you come across an 1903 or 08 colt pocket hammerless, let me know. I'm thinking about doing a little collecting and starting with pocket pistols. Got my C&R but never used it except for Brownells discounts.

I was at a Wallyworld yesterday and asked the ancient dude at the ammo counter if they ever carried .45-70 ammo.
He was about as old as foots so I thought this guy may have had actual experience with the ammo during the Indian Wars, but he had never heard of the cartidge but he did have some nice .30-30 ammo as that was all I needed to hunt deer.
I got some 405gr cast, some 385gr cast and looking to swap a guy for some 300gr JHP. Next year I'll start collecting components for reloading.
Now I have to make time to go shoot it.

I kind of thought the reference to as old as foots and the Indian wars would have brought a chuckle......but .30-30 ammo works too
