Sierra Nevada - Flipside
      #239850 - 09/16/13 09:29 AM

Dead in here.

I've been brewing a late-hopped Red ale the past 12 months that is awesome. It's more of a Red IPA.
The last keg ran out about a month ago and I haven't had time to brew more. I've got two Oktoberfests tying up my fermeters/aging coolers.

Anyway, I heard about SN's Flipside, which is a Red IPA, hopped with Simcoe, Centennial & Citra (I believe). Awesome red color, roasted, nutty malt flavors and a very hoppy finish to this beer, so any hophead will enjoy it.

Go find ya some.

I didn't like it.....I still don't like malty beers and this one had too much for me. I usually really enjoy SN beers, but I can live without this one.

Hey griff -- just curious if what you bought was warm or cold?

I bought mine warm and was leary, but had no choice. Hop forward beers do not age well at all when stored warm. I don't have any data to back it up. I just know I have had hoppy beer in Colorado fresh out of the tap and then tried it back here and totally different taste. The bitterness will fade and it's an unmistakable flavor when its bad.

I've also aged some of my hoppy beer in bottles at room temperature and ended up with the same flavor.

It's totally possible yours was fresh and stored correctly. I often wonder though how many people have tried hop forward beers that weren't stored properly and thought they tasted like pizz.
Sucks for the brewers when that happens cause they may only have that one chance to win a consumer and they get screwed cause the liquor store manager is clueless..

I think you're on to something there, Haus. Sometimes my favorite hoppy beers taste really good and fresh and you swear you just had the best beer ever. Other times not nearly as good or just mediocre. I think freshness and the way its been handled is a big thing, but also just variability from batch to batch. Microbrewers don't have their consistency down to a science, or may not even be able to control it to the extent that the major swill brewers can. I'm pretty damn sure NONE of them are refrigerating their stuff from their warehouse, through their distributor channels all the way to your supermarket shelves (except Coors long time ago). Its just the major brewers move inventory faster and probably with greater predictability, and you're not likely to detect because of the style anyway.

I bought it cold and, in fairness, I don't think it was handled poorly. In fact, it tasted about like I ended up seeing it described in some reviews. I just don't like malty beers......possibly because I don't have a sweet tooth at all.....I don't like chocolate, and won't eat cake, etc.....never have. Malty beers are just too sweet for me.....and that beer just has too much malt to suit me.

Here's one to try PD.....doubt you can find it yet, Haus, but maybe. East Side IPA brewed by Excel Bottling Co. out of Breeze, Ill. Schnucks is carrying it and I've been enjoying it quite a bit. It's got that hoppy grapefruit note that I REALLY like.

Back to the basics - I bought a sixer of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (not IPA, just Pale Ale) and I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Sierra Nevada and others just nailed that style and popularized it here in the U.S. in the 80's and it's still REAL good.

For an IPA, I've been enjoying the new Bass IPA - which I think is really a contract beer brewed by Anheuser-Busch (well, the Belgian outfit that bought 'em out, I guess). It's a good one, and it shows that the big boys can make good beer when they want to.

Griping about modern IPA's, back when I did so much homebrew competition judging, it was a DEFECT if you couldn't taste OAK in an IPA. It seems like that's kinda, sorta been forgot about - but I don't see that the characteristics of a style dating from 1820 or so should be changed.

I'll have to pick up a bottle of oak flavor extract at the local shop so I can put a couple of drops in each glass of IPA and taste it the way it really oughta be.

I'm back to the basics lately as well... the local grocer had Mirror Pond Pale Ale (Deschutes) on sale, and it's a real nice beer. Their Big Butte Black Porter is very good as well.

On another note, about a month ago we spent a Saturday afternoon at Piney River Brewery near Houston, MO. What a great setting. The owners were on site and were extremely friendly. Their enthusiasm and love of the place was evident. Bring your own BBQ. Can't say enough about it.

Piney River Brewery looks like a sweet outfit with the way they remodeled the old barn and such....
I enjoy the Missouri Mule and the fact that it comes in 16oz cans.

Speaking of Piney River. I just returned from the GABF. Brian and Jolene won a gold medal for their Old Tom Porter.. Pretty cool!

I tried that East Side IPA, Griffin. Very, very good. Will be getting more of that. Thats exactly my kind of IPA. Citrusy, alcohol strong with enough malt to support it and, but doesn't cross the line into acid territory with the hops or into butterscotch tasting with the higher alcohol . . . its just right.

Need to check out that Piney River Brewing place, Forsythian, next time I'm in the area. I've tried to find their stuff around here, but had no luck.

Had some kind've IPA the other night at Pi Pizza. might've been Left Hand Brewery? Also picked up a 6'er of Hibernation Ale the other night and it was damn fine, but not as good as I had remembered it from last year.

Keg is empty from the Zwickel lager crap I tried on a whim. Thank god. Need something to replace it. Any suggestions?

Yeah PD.....in the two months since I posted about East Side IPA it's truly become one of my favorites.

Your description/review was just right. It's strong enough that I don't want it every night... but on those nights I just want to drink 3 or 4 beers and melt into the recliner in front of the fire watching a game..........it's nearly perfect.

Hey PD,

It's probably old hat for you, but if I were in your neck of the woods I'd get a fresh batch of Shafley dry hop APA.

I've been working up in the Harrisburg PA area lately, and the Troeg's brewery up there has some real fine beers. Not sure about their distribution, anybody see any of their stuff around here?

I tried to get some of the East Side at the secret beer place and Shnucks....No luck.
But I picked up a sixer of Lille Sumptin Wild by Lagunitas. It is 8.8abv and was in the IPA area of the cooler. My first swallow I thought I had screwed up , it started with a mild malty flavor. But thankfully has a great hoppy finish. I recommend it.

Forsythian - I think those bastards that brew Schlafly drink too much. That dry hopped APA tasted different every time I tried it after it had been out for awhile and was no longer just a "special brew". I quit drinking it. Damn shame too since it was one of the first hoppy beers I tried and I really enjoyed it.

It's too bad Griffin... that Schlafly dry hop was my "gateway" beer to this sordid life of beer snobbery and cloudy recollections.

Maybe I oughta give Schlafly beers another chance. They've got a bunch of nifty beer styles, but I got ahold of something of theirs a long time ago and formed a bad impression. I got the idea that they brew "sugar beers" with a bunch of adjuncts (corn, corn syrup, corn sugar) taking the place of more expensive barley malt. Same deal as Shiner products, which I avoid.

I see that Beer Advocate gives their brews fairly good marks, scoring three-something and sometimes four out of five stars. So maybe I was wrong. What do you guys think about Schlafly beers as per quality?

Sam, I've never had nor heard of them brewing anything other than legit beers. I don't know where you might have come up with adjunct for their beers.

Tastes are person specific, but everyone of their beers I've had have been of very good quality. I'd say pound for pound, they are very good. I'd drink them night & day over Mother's beers.
They also make a seasonal coffee stout that I think you would enjoy.
