Man Card...
      #264198 - 06/28/23 07:37 AM

With regards toward current "woke" issues, is questioning a male peer's manhood in the current work force appropriate? Serious question (almost)...? When today's male youth can't see when to help, where to help, we got issues...I work at a farm and feed store, and I slap my head daily...

somewhere between "Hi, how can we help you?" and "Get off my lawn!"

"slap my head daily" may not be the best terminology, that's an entirely different issue...but you get my drift...

Have a nephew…….good kid
he has Step Dad……about SD……..well, let us just say I bite my tongue and try to stay out that family’s business

SD jumps kid’s ass about everything
Result …..kid is hesitant to do anything
I treat him a lot like dealing with wife
I describe the job…..steps that have to be-done and in what order….tools necessary to do the job etc

Still have to ask….repeat but we get it done….sometimes it is a struggle

After he does it a couple of times and he focuses and he does a good job ( we are taking short attention span theater)….... Kid is not afraid to work and when he gets some confidence…he doesn’t need me unless he gets stuck or screws something up.

Told him that he can’t screw something up so bad I can’t fix it…..found out….yes he can but we work thru it after I cool down and realize no one got hurt and it is just money…….sometimes that is really hard

Have found a lot of kids are like that…..afraid to make a mistake and have to be asked to do things in a sequential manner

After dealing with him, it makes me think my father, even with his famous lack of patience) was a saint

Talked with a teenage kid that has never used a shovel, rake or hammer. Ten years ago I would have thought he was from another planet.

WTF are these folks going to do if chit hits the fan ? Any nuke or EMP will render this place helpless. They can't even read an analog clock, or do simple math on paper. Most of them can't fish, garden, or forage. They don't have cash , know their own phone number, or know how to drive a manual buggy.

Bill, I think back on all the things I learned the hard way. I'm glad that was the case.

My son in law does remodel work on the side and has his boys in the business helping and learning. Last week they built a side-by-side bridge over a creek on our place, and you can drive a pickup truck over it. They love doing that kind of stuff and they fish. Other sil has a restaurant and all his kids work there starting at 14 doing dishes. Good for them. To many kids these days are just like you guys described.

I have one son and two son-in-laws. I taught my son the value of fixing things himself, figuring things out and not to be afraid of anything but a mean girl/woman and electricity until you know what you’re doing. One son-in-law is just like my son and will do or at least try to do anything. The other is a work in progress. But I learned he is like a lot of suburban soccer kids… He actually resents that his mom and dad just shuttled him to games, practices and tournaments, but never let him take his bike apart with his dad’s tools, go camping, help fix a broken dryer or car or door, etc. I buy him a tool or two for every birthday and Christmas. I also have him help me with all sorts of projects. Last Christmas I asked him to take all of the wrapping paper and boxes to the burn barrel and burn it all. He looked at me like I just asked him to take out his own appendix. It never occurred to me he had no idea how to do that. So we got the liquid kindling, a lighter and the Christmas trash and walked down to the 55 gallon drum (with God knows what chemical residue in it) and fired it up. He was like his kids were opening presents. He since had asked multiple times if we need anything burned.

I think a lot of these kids are lazy, worthless, spoiled punks. But a good many just want to be shown what to do and are ready, willing able to work. Those kids have been let down by their parents…

That sounds like my parents. My dad never taught me anything about cars, or much of anything else, and every time I talked about aspiring to do something when I grew up, they would actively put it down. All they cared about was how many hours I could work in their store, starting when I was 7 years old. They also stole money out of my pay, until I turned 16.

When I was about to graduate from high school, they said that I should start thinking about college.

Lucky my Dad included us boys in about every fix it project and chore around the house. Also got me into hunting and fishing. Passed that on to my kids and will start on the grand kids in short order.
