creek questions
      #229332 - 06/01/12 07:55 AM

the kid is out of school now so no football or weights to contend with and seems to have developed a taste for catfishin. We got ponds to go to and such but he wants bigger meaner fish than the ponds can provide. He has been fishin a creek not too far from home at a spot not too far from the Mo river. He doesnt have a boat, luckily, so i dont have to worry bout him gettin on the river yet. My question is what are the best baits to use. He has had some luck on nightcrawlers. He even took goldfish one evening but never got a bite on those. HIs gear is heavy enough to land a gator with. Yes he is using a swivel with a weight above it adn a leader below it. ANy tips would help. I have fished the same places years ago and caught some fish. But i was a lot wilder than he is. I wsa more concerned with how to keep the beer cold. He actually seems to want to catch fish.

Tell him to fish the deep holes. Particularly where there are submerged logs or root balls. Keep the bait at the head of the hole and let the scent of the bait draw them out.

Also remind him that is he isn't loosing tackle he's fishing the wrong spot.

If he is interested in BIG fish then he should target flatheads in the creek and they prefer live bait. Green sunfish are an excellent bait for flatheads but bluegill work as well. I doubt the bigger blues would go up a creek unless there is a big rain and the creek comes up. But flatheads will definetly. They prefer to be around structurs such as downed tree tops.
Fishing on the Missouri itself from a wingdam would get him into big fish as well. The bigger blues prefer the scour holes at the end of the wingdam.

Uncooked shrimp. Buy it in the grocery store, peel it at home, keep in on ice. It's easy to put on the hook, stays on and will get chomped by any catfish, even flatheads.

Keep in mind, fishing from the bank makes landing the big boys a little harder, especially if it is a steep bank or one with difficult footing. In a boat, you have the luxury of a trolling motor and can play the fish a little to wear it down. From the bank, you need a slightly heavier line and have to be very careful about horsing one in. It's easy to break them off or cut the line on bank rocks.

Good luck to the lad. Sounds like he's making memories

Oh yeah, if I were fishing for cats from the bank, I would spend a few extra $$$ for top quality cirlce hooks. Once hooked, the fish ain't coming unhooked...

Hell this time of year we used to jump in and noodle for them big fishes. I still have a blk & white photo of Dad's big catfish bite on his calf, and I'll try to get it posted up one of these days. That fish was one mean sob!! It tried to chase Dad outta the creek!

We used to have a helluva lot of fun going into them holes, blocking it with our body, and feelin' the bottom of the hole. If it was nice and sandy, it was likely in use. If it was all mucky on the bottom, no fish. Pretty simple to do, but you got to ignore the millions of spiders on the water and banks in yer face. More than anything we tried not to corner a beaver or a muskrat in a hole. Muskrats can bite ya like a buzz-saw, as my uncle Jerry learned.

I come from a long line of noolders, although I haven't been for many years now. Twas' some serious country fun!!! We never caught/kept more than a couple a year, and some were in excess of 40lbs.

I always preferred chicken livers. Bought them fresh at the grocery store when I was going. Loose line with an egg sinker using a drop line. Garcia reel in free spool mode.

hoop net baiting with a female this time of year usually works well - or a tramble net set just below the length of a long shaft does the trick also.

If I were to fish a stretch of creek near a big river, I'd look for the closest hole along a cut bank with heavy wood cover. If current is light, I'd use no larger than 1 oz of weight on the end of the line with a circle hook tied about 24 inches up the line. I'd take a green sunfish about 4 inches long, scale the bottom half of each side of the fish (this is very important)and toss it close to the wood cover.
