On July 25, two days shy of 7 months since it was ordered, the .458 SOCOM upper arrived. Glass is supposed to be here tomorrow.
The first test loads are done, laddering up in 1/2 grain increments. I stopped a full grain below max in case I start seeing pressure issues. No sense having to pull bullets.
Looking forward to pulling the trigger on this thing and even more to trying it out on a Texas pig.

I'm hoping mine comes in before October. That setup you are working on should wack the piss out of some pigs.

Kev - what weight bullets are you going to use? what's the estimated energy?
Dog - I guess the .223 takes multiple hits to bring then down?

Dean - The bullets that are loaded in the pic above are 300 grain Remington HP's. Don't know actual muzzle velocity yet, but once I settle on a load I'll run them across the chronograph. However, the muzzle velocity of these particular bullets with the powder I'm testing, Accurate Arms 1680, should be somewhere between 1850 and 1950 fps which will put energy levels around 2280 to 2500 ft/lb.
In addition to the Remington HP's I have some Hornady 300 grain HP Interlock and Barnes 300 grain TAC-TX. The Barnes cannot be pushed as fast since it is a much longer bullet with a corresponding longer bearing surface.
The SOCOM is a relatively low pressure round with max operating pressure set at 35,000psi. Test loads have to be worked up carefully watching for pressure signs. If you see a flattened primer (which will start flattening around 40,000) you're already past safe working pressures.
My upper is a 16" RRA mid-length gas system. If I had done a little more research before ordering I would have ordered a carbine length gas system. It makes a difference in reloading since the carbine length allows you to use powders such as H-110 and Lil Gun to get some higher velocities. The pressure curve on those powders peaks quickly and by the time the bullet has passed the gas port, the pressure has dropped to the point where those powders won't (in most cases...) reliably cycle the action on a mid-length. I will try H-110 though just to see if my mileage may vary.

Dean......the .223 does just fine, when you shoot them in the head. One shot, one kill. When you give them a body shot, they run off. Hell they run off with a .270 with a body shot. The .458 SOCOM under 200 yards will flat wear them out.

Shot 19 test loads from the bench yesterday afternoon. I'm here to tell ya that shooting a .458 Socom with a standard A2 stock, from the bench, while wearing a T shirt... you know you've pulled the trigger on something when it goes off.

Got an email yesterday. RRA shipped out my .458 SOCOM and it will be at the front door tomorrow. I guess I'll get a chance to shoot it next weekend. I'll have to shoot it to think of a name. Surely it can't kick more than a 7mm Ultra mag or a .375 H&H. I guess we will see next Saturday.

The recoil is tolerable. The recoil of my 7mm mag is worse and my .444 Marlin (with my handloads) is the hardest kicking rifle I own.
That meat tenderizer hammer buttplate on the A2 stock, coupled with the fact I was wearing only a T shirt and shooting in a not-too-optimal-leaning-into-the-gun position from the bench, led to the pounding on my brachial nerve.
The next batch of test loads will be done from a lead sled.

I guess I get to try out the new pig slayer tomorrow. Should be fun. I guess it gets named after some rounds go down the pipe

By the way - SBR is out of everything for the Socom. Their cheapest load which uses the Hornady 300 grain JHP (when it's in stock...) is $54.50 for a box of 20, or $2.75 each.
My handloads using that same bullet run $1.82 everytime you squeeze the trigger. But that is adding in the cost of the brand new unfired brass for the first loading. After the initial loading if you subtract the cost of the brass, the price goes down to $0.60 per round.
If you have SBR load your cases using the Barnes 300 grain TTSX, they charge $2.52 per round for unfired brass or $2.62 for fired brass.
My handloads using the Barnes 300 gr TAC-TX (same bullet) run $2.45 for the first loading/firing, then $1.23 each after that.
The initial cost of the gun is a pretty big chunk, but then you have to feed that hungry sumbeotch.

Thanks for letting me out some rounds down the pipe!!!! "Shredder" is now hungry for pork. This full mag will be well thought out shots. Want to see what a head shot looks like
