Cleaning out some excess deer in eastern NE
      #193742 - 10/10/09 11:11 AM

Read in the paper that this weekend in the eastern tier of counties along the MO river and some along the Platte in eastern NE of a deer herd reduction hunting season. The popluation has more than doubled in the past couple years and the deer strikes around here have become absurdly commonplace. Within the 3-4 miles of road I drive before I get into town I see on average 8-10 deer kills by autos each year. Really have to watch for those suckers.

Ya gotta buy a $30 permit and you can shoot two antlerless deer. You can buy as many permits as you want. They are hoping that a couple thousand deer are shot. Any and all legals weapons are permitted.

At my place just norf' of Omaha, deer have become as thick as flies. It is common to have 6-8 does in my yard at once eating crabapples several times a day. Last weekend I was sitting on the front porch and I lightly stung two with a BB gun out of sheer oneriness on my part.

Turkey aren't quite a thick but we see a flock of 6-7 toms and another flock of the same size of hens. If I start feeding birds, they are all over the deck and poop everywhere.

Horned deer much less common, that is until the season opens. Then I am likely to see a dandy or two with bigger racks. Seems when they are getting pressure they like to hide out out around people's homes where the pressure is less.

I never thought I would live to see such abundance of game this close up.

I've done some walking looking for deer sheds in the spring. One place I walk along a state hwy that runs through a Missouri CA. I find dead deer 30 yds off the highway in the brush and even in the fields if there is a 1/4 acre of woods out in the middle of the field I'll find 2 or 3 dead in there. I also find that the paths where deer cross frequently get piled up with 2 or 3 deer in one spot dead.

My point is for every deer you find out by the road, I would guess there are 2-3 that made it up into the brush that you don't see.

Unless the highway workers are just pulling them up into the brush, then my hypothesis is all wrong, what do I know. But I think they normally haul them to a dumping area.

I don't doubt for a moment there are more deads than what I see along the roadside. They are just the ones that flop dead upon impact. We all know mortally many wounded deer don't drop like shot dogs. Good point, hucklbury. That would make sense given the local numbers...
