metal shavings in oil - update
      #239668 - 09/05/13 08:20 AM

Just took my 01 Artic Cat 400 into Lincoln Power Sports to get it worked on. It started making noises and cutting out really bad last weekend. It sat idling while I moved a ladder to put it on the truck.

The wait in line time at Lincoln Power Sports is 4-5 weeks right now but he said it may be sooner depending on how long it takes to get the backlog down.

This ATV has run like a champ since I bought from a friend in 2005 so I hope they can fix it up. I asked for an estimate and he said a re-build could run anywhere from $500 to $2,000 depending on what they have to do. A new motor (if they could find one) would be $3,300.

Gonna be a long 4-5 weeks with bow season opening up and still more work to do on the farm!

I know Cat used to make decent snow machines.
01 Cat prolly has lots of hours & miles I suppose.
Might be time for a new/newer Honda or Polaris.
Could be throwin good $ after bad. In the end, you'llhave to decide. Just for thought.
Hows yer tires???????

The ATV has run really good for 8 years before this happened so I'm not really sure how you judge that as throwing good dollars after bad??

I don't baby it, push snow in the winter for me and my neighbors. My hunting area is all rough hills and forest, so I was thinking 8 years with no issues was pretty good.

Probably has around 500 hours on it and all I've ever had to do to it was change a battery once in a while and change the oil every year.

What's the life expectancy on a newer Honda or Polaris? I've heard some really good things about Honda but some not so good things about Polaris.

The tires that came on it are after market big knobby high traction tires and they are in really good shape. Haven't had any flats in 8 years.

I would judge the conditions or concerns of future trouble issues. Sounds like you seem to have none.. Just curious about what else might be trouble in the future if you keep the Cat. Axles, bearings, tranny & maybe some others.

I have no idea about life exp. of the newer Hondas or Polaris'. I just know that if I were to buy a 4 wheeler...........new or used..it'd be a Honda.

I hope you get the Cat fixed. Maybe just a ring job.

p.s......checked around a lil'..forget the polaris from what most peeps say!!!

This is the first 4 wheeler I have owned and the first time getting it worked on in a shop. I really am not sure what to expect. The service mgr said they warranty their repairs for 30 days. I said ONLY 30 days? He replied, "just run the crap out of it when you get it back." I think I will be running it as often as I can to make sure it is repaired correctly. Thanks for your I put, it is appreciated!

Plus this seems like the first post in years in this forum, we burned the co webs off!

I second duardo's comment.

Lets say you spend 2g's on it. You got that invested in an old machine.

You can buy a good used machine for 5g or so. Take the 2g, put some more with it and trade yours in. Upgrade 5 or 6 years and don't worry about it for a while.

You might have to look but I bought an 05 rhino 660 in 2010 for 5,300.00. Upgraded from an 01 four wheeler...so I been there...done that.

I went up to my lease in Montgomery County Saturday to set up a ladder stand and finish up the stand I was building when my 4 wheeler started acting up. I had just arrived and was getting ready to head back into the woods when a truck comes down my road (other than my place the neighbor behind me has 272 acres) so I walked out to say hi and there's two guys in the truck. I recognized the driver as a guy that I met briefly last year opening day of rifle season leaving from my neighbor's place.
We start talking and shooting the chit and I mentioned that my 4 wheeler had messed up and I had to take it into the shop. He asked me "where did you take it?" I replied Lincoln Power Sports, to which he says, "look at my hat" I did and it said Lincoln Power Sports on it. He said the service mgr there is my B-I-L!and you are going to get a discount on your service bill! I was totally blown away. I gave him my name and he said that he would call so I'm hoping this will work out and he will do what he says he can do.
It is indeed a very small world!

Lincoln Power Sports called yesterday and said that one of the magnets on the flywheel came loose and that was the "metal" I was seeing in the oil.

Bottom line is it will cost just under $1K to fix, which is better than what I was expecting.

Should be done in a week or so.
