Is a ribbon snake the same thing as a garter snake? It is hard for me to tell with no blood and the head still intact

They're similar, but not the same.

With experience, you can usually tell by looking at their backs. Ribbons will have a more slender body, and their stripes are a little different. The head is the best way by far to ID them.

(Especially when it's still attached).

Two Rat Snakes in the driveway today, both about four feet long.

I caught them one at a time, and put them at the edge of the woods. It was a good day.
(One of the few things that makes hot weather tolerable).

I caught a Ringneck in the goat pen today, and released it under the chicken coop. We no longer have goats or chickens; friends were tearing down the goat pen, and this snake was under a cinder block.
