Arlington

Not the best quality pics. I just used my point and shoot Pentax that I use for work. But here are a few shots from my most recent trip to Arlington. I am always moved by the Changing of the Guard...

Arlington is trully an awe inspiring place. Lots of heroes sleeping there. God bless them all!

Haven't been there since 1985, but I can remember tha trip like it was yesterday. Tomb of the Unknown is something everyone should have to see along with the war memorials. Changing of the guard will leave you speechless.

I know I am going to take my kids there in a couple of years when they can fully better understand and appreciate it.

You know, those guys wear those wool uniforms 365 days a year. On this day it was at least 95 degrees and the sun was baking. I was sweating like a whore in church, in shorts and a loose fitting shirt. I'm sure they have their little tricks of the trade to try to stay cool but hot is still hot...

Dawg, I went to DC when I was young and, in retrospect, I was glad someone took me. But I really didn't appreciate Arlington until I was an adult and fully understood what it all means. If you take your kids, make it fun and interesting for them. I'm not saying don't visit the Holocaust Museum or Arlington or the war memorials. I would, however, recommend that you don't spend as much time as YOU would like or the kids will get bored and the trip will suck. Spend some time in the Smithsonian museums that have cool stuff for them to look at and and interact with. Just my $.02.

If there is any way you can swing it to go without the kids, I would highly recommend it. For at least one day anyway. That allows you to really absorb the ambiance of a place like Arlington or the Holocaust Museum or the various war memorials...

Carry on...

Ya I went to DC when I was 12......loved the Smithstonian Museums, saw the 4th of July fireworks display sittin in front of the Washington Monument, I liked history as a kid...so seein that stuff was interesting to me.

Cody reminded me this am that he went to DC a couple years ago with my parents to visit my brother out at Quantico. I don't think they took him to Arlington, but they did hit the rest of the monumets out there. I'm glad he went...a bit young too understand most of it, but I do want to take him back in a couple of years when he can appreciate more of it. I know I will appreciate it more the next trip out and see stuff I missed out on as a kid.

The Holocaust Mus. is new as well as the WW II memorial. I want to see those.

The Holocaust Museum is about as well done as any museum I have ever seen. It is so well put together and really puts the whole thing into perspective for you. I would not take a kid under 12-14 years old. They simply are not capable of comprehending the magnitude of what it all means and they would certainly detract from your taking it all in.

Sptsman - Just throwing a few more pictures out on your thread. These were taken on my last trip there in March 2001 when I had been to Quantico.

It was my first time to witness the changing of the guard and the solemn feeling in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Nice pics... Couldn't agree more with your assessment of the feeling when you're there...

Funny story: Two years in a row, I went with the 8th grade class from our little school. On the second year, one of my boy's friends asked, why are they guarding the tomb and what would they do if some one attacked it? Would they shoot them?

I was able to explain the purpose and meaning of an honor guard but found myself a little lost with the "attack" part. Of course, I tried the easy way out by asking him why someone would do that but the kid outsmarted me and said, "Because some people are just crazy and do stupid stuff..." Man, was he dead on. I eventually gave him some lame response about them being real soldiers and fully capable of defending the tomb, should it be necessary...

I wonder if they've ever had to deal with someone trying to deface it or disrespecting it to the point they had to take action?
