Mom: Chemical-laced toy made son 'drunk'

By DIKKY SINN, Associated Press Writer Thu Nov 8, 9:14 AM ET

A woman whose toddler son ingested a popular toy that contains a chemical that turns into a powerful "date rape" drug when eaten said Thursday she knew he was ill when he began to stumble, seemed drunk and started vomiting.

The mother, Shelby Esses, said her 20-month-old son Jacob, fell down and was limp after getting into his older sister's Aqua Dots, a Chinese-made toy recalled Wednesday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

"And that's when we knew what he had eaten and that things were pretty bad," she told ABC's "Good Morning America."

Aqua Dots, a highly popular holiday toy sold by Australia-based Moose Enterprises, are beads that can be arranged into designs and fused when sprayed with water. The toy was pulled from shelves in North American and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into a dangerous drug when eaten. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

Scientists say a chemical coating on the beads, when ingested, metabolizes into the so-called date rape drug gamma hydroxy butyrate. When eaten, the compound ? made from common and easily available ingredients ? can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

Dr. Matt Jaeger, of Arkansas Children's Hospital, treated Jacob and said he was very worried when he saw him.

"It was pretty dramatic," he told ABC. "He was unconscious in this coma for about six hours. And then over the course of just a few minutes, went from being completely asleep to wide awake and playing like nothing ever happened."

Meanwhile, versions of the toy seized in Hong Kong were being tested Thursday, a customs official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of policy. If the tests come back positive for the chemical, suppliers of the toy in Hong Kong could face a year in jail and fines of $12,877, she said.

A spokeswoman for the CPSC said Thursday that parents should heed the warning against using the product.

"If a child ingests them the glue turns into a toxic substance and it's very serious," Julie Vallese, a spokeswoman for the CPSC, said on CBS' "Early Show." "We want parents very much to heed this warning."

Vallese said two U.S. children had gone into "unresponsive, comatose" conditions from the Aqua Dots and "those children have since recovered."

In Australia, the toys were ordered off store shelves on Tuesday when officials learned that a 2-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl were hospitalized after swallowing the beads. A 19-month-old toddler also was being treated.

Problems in China's toy industry came into focus earlier this year when Mattel Inc. recalled more than 21 million Chinese-made toys worldwide. Products including Barbie doll accessories and toy cars were pulled off shelves because of concerns about lead paint or tiny detachable magnets that could be swallowed.

The latest toys under scrutiny are called Aqua Dots in the United States and Bindeez in Australia, where they were named toy of the year at an industry function.

Retailer Toys "R" Us Inc. said it issued a "stop sale" on the entire Spin Master Aqua Dots product line on Tuesday in its North American stores and on its Web site after it learned of the news. "We understand that Spin Master and U.S. regulatory authorities are investigating this product and we have asked Spin Master to fully explain what it believes happened," it said.

Toys "R" Us said it pulled all the toy beads from its stores in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia after officials in Australia ordered them off the shelves Tuesday.

A company spokeswoman for Moose Enterprises' Hong Kong office said the production of the toy was outsourced to a mainland Chinese factory. She refused to elaborate and referred all further requests for comment to the company's head office in Australia.

"Our Hong Kong office is only responsible for operations such as logistics and shipping arrangements, we don't have any firsthand information," the employee, who would only give her surname, Lo, told The Associated Press.

Moose Enterprises said Bindeez and Aqua Dots are made at the same factory, which is in Shenzhen in southern Guangdong province. Last week, the government announced an export ban on more than 700 toy factories in the region because of shoddy products.

The company said the product is distributed in 40 countries.

The toys were supposed to use 1,5-pentanediol, a nontoxic compound found in glue, but instead contained the harmful 1,4-butanediol, which is widely used in cleaners and plastics.

The Food and Drug Administration in 1999 declared the chemical a Class I Health Hazard, meaning it can cause life-threatening harm.

Both chemicals are manufactured in China and elsewhere, including by major multinational companies, and are also marketed over the Internet.

It's not clear why 1,4-butanediol was substituted. However, there is a significant difference in price between the two chemicals. The Chinese online trading platform ChemNet China lists the price of 1,4 butanediol at between about $1,350-$2,800 per metric ton, while the price for 1,5-pentanediol is about $9,700 per metric ton.

In the first place, I don't think the Chinese give a rat's ass about health and safety or environmental issues.

In the second place, I think they're experimenting to see how well their various toxic products get through U.S. safeguards.

When the Chinese decide to take Taiwan back, I think they're going to be in a position to defeat us militarily in the western Pacific. I also think they'll fix it so our whole country is SICK from some of their toxic crap while we're trying to fight that battle.

Yup, it sure is strange that the violations are so widespread.
There doesn't seem to be much information as to whether their domestic goods have the same problems.
We need to get back to producing our own goods, the dollar is weak, but are life style is surviving it just fine, so its time to fire up our domestic manufacturing. I believe We can compete.

while I do not doubt the American worker's ability to make better products than anyone in the world, I doubt a couple of things that would be serious obstacles in retooling back to a former economy

number one, Americans ain't going to work for the wages the third worlders will and since they won't do that, American consumers ain't going to pay the prices for those products, and American investors aren't going to stand for poor profit margins that creates

Well yea of no faith, we have products now that are manufactured by Americans making good wages. The Chinese goods are rising in cost, but without options here there is nothing that can be done about it. What makes you think Americans won't buy American products? Just because you drive a rice burner doesn't mean everyone wants to.
The dollar value makes American exports attractive and that means volume which means greater profits.
Not all companies are investor owned, but even those that are will be profitable.
the reason we don't have more domestic productivity is that we have to deal with the trade deficits we have built, but we have to start sometime, even if you anti's don't like it.

"What makes you think Americans won't buy American products?"--Hellabor

the success of Wal-Mart, the fact that working class Americans will in almost every instance buy the similar product that costs less, face it there ain't a large contingent of consumers who take the time to look at the tag to see if it was manufactured by Sue Lynn or by Su Li and even those who do look at the tag, how many put the product down and opt to buy the more expensive item? Even when you consider most Americans don't know squat about economics, they generally know enough to make that decision 9 times out of 10

I'd much rather we made most of our chit, but we don't need to cut off what can be made better in other markets in the process of transferring back to a more industrialized base (i.e. the government doesn't need to make restrictions). the question is how do you do that in light of the consumers, investors and workers?

every part of the world has something it can build better than we can simply because they have a labor force near a natural resource that we don't have. The reason our country is so rich is mostly due to freedom, but we are also blessed with a myriad of natural resources and have a population ready and willing to exploit those resources to make goods for us and for the world.

Hellabor if you thought before you posted, you wouldn't constantly ask questions more apt for the dumbass conspiracy theorist who never finds out anything before showing his ass to the world

So which is it ding dong? We do have the labor and resources, or we don't?

you have the mental capacity of a small child, anyone with half a brain knows what I was saying and that the two statements were talking about two different things. It is also pretty damn clear, dumbass, that I said we have the labor and resources, now when we get Johnny Rivets to stop wanting to live like his CEO then we might have something.

I know you never learned a damn thing about the forests when you were out here getting lost in them trying to kill something, but do you have to be the dumbass you are at every opportunity?

Whad U exspect after the conservatives destroyed the unions?
Bring the unions back along with a good pay scale. Start being self supporting instead of greedy for a quick profit and this type of problem will go away.

That one took 45 sec. of thought.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that pitiful American dream, improving ones lot.
Absolutely Rosie, Johnny needs to know his place and put his head down and be thankful the CEO will give him a job.
Yeah you're a real conservative alright.
Sorry Ghost Hunter, Eugene Debs and Mother Jones aren't any better than the likes of Rosie. The unions destroyed themselves, when they turned from wages and conditions to security for malcontents and unrealistic perks. At that time they reduced their membership to the lowest denominator.

"Absolutely Rosie, Johnny needs to know his place and put his head down and be thankful the CEO will give him a job."--Hellabor

yeah he can begin by thanking his lucky stars that some rich people decided to risk their capital and bring him in and pay him for his labor. After all when he accepted the job, he accepted the pay and benefits. The problem is he demands higher and higher pay, more and more time off, more and more benefits, to the point that he and his ilk dry up the investment.

If Johnny Rivets wants to improve his lot in life and no one would besmirch him of that goal, he can do it like anyone else, by risking his own capital on his own venture.

You don't enrich yourself by holding your labors hostage. The American worker wants to bemoan the movement of jobs south or north or across the seas, he has only himself to blame for not staying competitive.

I worked in a steel mill from 1967-73. Night shifts, dirty dangerous work, a crew of mostly Czechs, Poles, Hunkies, and Italians whose families had worked steel for generations - good, tough guys.

We had two men who went on at each other like Liberty and HB - yippety-yippety, yap-yap, like a couple of wimmen for months. They were driving everybody crazy. Finally one night the whole crew, including the melter foreman, grabbed them and threw them in a freight elevator. We closed the screen and told 'em they weren't coming out until the fight was done and they had it over with.

The instigator - the younger, bigger guy who always started it - wouldn't fight. He was bouncing off the elevator walls trying to stay away from the older, shorter, quieter man who he could have whipped easily. I think things usually work out that way.

How ya doing today, Liberty?
