2015 Saint Louis Cardinals
      #247164 - 11/18/14 09:17 AM

Early thread this year with the big trade yesterday.

I need some time to cypher this one. I thought Shelby was just coming into his own.

A direct result of the Oscar Tavaras tragedy.

Shelby wasn't as good as his rookie year, but you can attribute that to hitters having a better idea of how he pitches. Hate to see him go, but the 2015 teams needs more offense than pitching.

I was pretty impressed with Grichuk at the end of the year and still think he can get the job done in RF.

You wonder sometimes what mgt is looking at when they make these trades. Last year, Jay wasn't good enough to cut it in CF, so they trade for Bourjous. What a flop. I understand not all trades pan out, but what I see is that they have little faith in the guys on the squad and think they can turn around some washed up dude with the fact that they're playing in STL.
They sure sold that yesterday when explaining the reason for trading for Heyward.

I certainly don't think Heyward is washed up & I sure hope Heyward gets back to how he was when he was a rook. I think the pitch to the face had a big impact on his performance..

We shall see.

Heyward was supposed to be the best thing since slices bread when he came up. Rocket arm, a bat to fear, and a dude who could run. He hasn't drove in more than 100 runs ever. 82 was his best season. Only one 20+ HR season in 5 years. Never scored more than 100 runs. Most SB in a season was 21. Career .261 average. Other than his rocket arm, I'm not impressed with him.

We gave up a young starting pitcher who we had signed for nothing Gave away another great prospect for a dude who is overrated with the bat and has a great arm........which is what we had with Bourjous, without the high payroll.

You're right about Bourjos Haus but in the end we got Grichuk too and I'd do that same trade tomorrow. I also agree about the HBP in the face and well, at least he is one more year removed from that.

The Tavaras thing put the Cards in this situation.

Atlanta needs pitching and are in a mini rebuild. They move a future FA and got good value with Miller imo.

But this trade makes sense on both sides. And Walden is hardly some foot note, he will replace Neshek.

Dog we'll see about Shelby. I like the kid and as I said, thought he was coming into his own this past second half. I hate to lose him and yes, there's a chance this is the Braves revenge for the Wainright trade.

But seems you are dismissing Hayward a bit. Hard to overstate what a GG right fielder can do for a team. And his on base percentage has been historically strong.....we can lead him off and use Carp to bring home some runs. Grichuk will go against most of the lefties.

Not sure if people realize what the repercussions of losing a guy like Tavaras means. Cards had to do something and once again, they've done it on the cheap, for a year at least. Yeah it's a gamble, but it's a good enough one for me anyway to wait and see how it plays out.

I do know there are a lot of pizzed off people in Atlanta right now. Hope it stays that way.

He brings a great glove to STL. He hasn't lives up to the hype at the plate IMO. Every time I heard some talking head mention him, I expected .300 BA and 30 HR a year. As a leading guy, 20+ steals, and at least 100 runs. Granted I know if you don't have folks behind you, it's hard to get driven in. He isn't Carpenter, which would still be my choice for a lead off guy.

Pitching always seem to be an issue year in and out with something happening in STL. Yes someone steps in to fill that role, but pitching is your lifeblood. Sure scoring runs is big, but if your pitching can't go 6 innings night in and out, you are screwed. A pitcher you aren't paying chit to have around........an even bigger bonus.

Maybe a change of scenery will help Hayward. I'm not sold on this deal until he proves himself here. I wasn't big on picking up Beltan for a couple years either............but he worked out great and tapered off after he left STL. Time will tell

Cards might be going after Lester. Still more wood to cut.
