the victim in this crime would be, I guess the federal government???

how dare you not pay us taxes on your homemade whiskey.

The federalis sure did make the world a better place with this bust.

I know I feel safer knowing these guys are off the streets and handing over their 80 acres to the government

Ain't that a shame? The government ought to just leave those guys alone.

Liquor enforcement agents have always been called "Revenuers", and that's what it's all about. The government just wants money.

Ya know, some laws are just chickenchit.

I was a cop for 20 years, and looking back on it I sure did some "selective" enforcement.

I never arrested any ho's for prostitution. I never arrested anyone for having marijuana, as long as they weren't selling it.

Never arrested anyone or wrote a ticket for "open container in a motor vehicle", but I was hard on drunk drivers. Teenage boys screwing 16-17 year old girls, I left them alone too. Guys out hunting or shooting where it was safe but a county ordinance said it was illegal - I never wrote any tickets for that.

If there's no victim, it shouldn't be a crime, in my opinion. Those laws about not being able to make your own booze and/or sell it (to adults) are just chickenchit and they come from government greed.

Liquor laws are screwed up, and that's the truth.

Back in 1990, we had a good-sized homebrew supply shop in CA, with mail-order customers all over the U.S. That's when I retired from the county, left our first branch shop out there, and moved the main shop to MO.

We didn't sell any alcohol, but we sold the makings. As soon as we moved here, we started getting questioned about the legality - and a couple of local churches got upset about our business. They complained to the cops, trying to get us shut down. Back then, "customers" kept trying to get me to sell homebrew to them - and darndest thing, those were the "customers" who drove guv'ment fleet cars. I ain't that dumb, but I was afraid trouble was coming.

I found out the state Liquor Control Board is partitioned into several districts. I located the enforcement agent for our district in Joplin and called him. He said making beer and wine for your own use was legal, but first you had to post a $1000. bond with the state.

I called the guy in West Plains. He said making unlicensed beer or wine anywhere in Missouri was a felony, and if he found out about it someone was going to prison.

I called the guy in St. Louis. He said, hell, he's a homebrewer himself, and it's not a violation.

Fortunately, soon after that, homebrew shop owners statewide got together and with the help of brew clubs like the St. Louis Brews we got specific Missouri legislation passed that legalized making up to 200 gallons of beer or wine per year for personal consumption. That's the same as a Federal law that was passed in 1978.

HOWEVER - making hard liquor or possession of an unlicensed still is still a felony under both Missouri and Federal law. I've had lots of chances to tinker with that, and I might even know a feller who knows a feller who knows how to do it - but it's not worth it. You really don't want to mess with the B.A.T.F.

You can, you just can't sell it. They didn't nail these guys for making it, they got them for selling it. If they had kept it in the barn they would have been fine.
The bulk of the Moonshiner stories came during Prohibition and immediately after, before enough distilleries came back on line. Some dry states still had a little here and there fore sale, Oklahoma comes to mind. The bulk of it wasn't all that great, and some was down right dangerous to drink.

If you're in need of some Copper, here it is.

HB, you can't even make distilled liquor period. Has nothing to do with selling it. They don't want people consuming untaxed liquor.
Folks down in Mac County got busted earlier this year for having a still and providing 'shine to friends. As the story went, they just brewed up a lil shine for the weekends so they and their buddies could sip whilst watchin NASCAR. I guess one weekend, they went road trippin back in the sticks, and ran into some county fuzz. Long story short, info got told of the still in the barn, and they got busted. County pressed charges for for the still, now they're waiting for federal charges.
I don't agree with it either, specially since you can make so much beer and wine.

the gubbamint's loaded down with stupid ass rules to satisfy one special group or another

it's a shame not enough people give a rat's ass about the next person and their troubles to demand a change. This sort of subjectivity in the law exists everywhere. It's the piecemeal destruction of our liberties, applauded by one special interest group or another. A bunch of damn school marms got this crap passed a long time ago. Others get other freedoms removed, you got your anti-fat folk who are moving toward taking out fast food, you got your anti-SUV folk who are pussifying vehicles in the name of a bogus threat, you got the tax the hell out of the tobacco users bunch who want smokers to pay for everything they are too lazy to work for themselves before hard working smokers kick the bucket and with each and everyone of these damn groups and their damn laws, they pick off just enough of you to say "that's a good idea." 120 years later and where are we, we sure as hell ain't free.

I think the key is that the Gubment can't come into your place without probable cause. You ain't guilty of anything until you get caught.

I think the key is, a lot of stupid people with their own pet peeves and vitriolic hatred toward people they don't know or people they don't know who have figured something out that they haven't yet convince others that raping Americans of their freedoms is OK in many, many instances.

Of course, they are wrong, but then again how would a stupid person ever know that? Being that they are stupid and all.

You can find plans and even buy kits all over the internet to make a still. But soon as you put that sucker together its again the law.

Fork that.....I might break the speed limit now and again but I dont care much for looking over my shoulder to see if the man is watching me to see if he can find a reason to slap some silver bracelets on my wrists.

Ain't no speed limit in your garage. If the makers don't sell or give any away, never take it from the castle, what prosecutor is going to prosecute someone for medicating, if they knew.

no I just wish so-called freedom loving Americans would act like it in all things they do rather than help the enemy with some pet project of theirs, such as you wanting nationalized healthcare and firestorm forests for your kiddies to hunt already emaciated elk in.

If I "thought" about making some, I would, but I wouldn't let it get around and thats the key.
The last time a buddy and I thought about making some, if we had we would have kept it quietly for are own enjoyment. We thought we could probably make some out of taters and a copper tube running from a pressure cooker down through a coffee can where the copper would coil and be covered in ice. I still think it would have worked, pun intended.
But who knows, maybe not.
