When you try and go 525 mph nothing much good is going to happen. The tiniest issue becomes catastrophic.

Got to give her props for having a set of balls bigger than just about any dude on earth.

The saying from those involved, about both men and women would be:

"At least she (or he) died, doing what she (or he) loved."

There are fates, far worse than that. Most people never have that opportunity.

Here's the backstory on the now deceased woman who still holds that record she was trying to break. Kitty O'Neill.

Back in the 70's contractual obligations with Hal Needham, prevented her from attempting a faster run than Needham. SI, called it "unbecoming and degrading" for a woman to attempt such a run.

This is only 1 of 22 land and water speed records that she still owns....

Do you know Louise Ann Noeth aka Landspeed Louise?

If not, then if you ever hear that she is speaking anywhere......you need to go and hear her.

I have had the pleasure of hearing her and seeing her photography .......great story.

A real hot rod lover and someone who carved her space in the male dominated Bonneville Salt Flats.

Thank you. I will keep that in mind, as we often get speakers in the desert and around my parents' down there.

We are really fussy about what we buy now. Unless it's a keeper, it's unlikely that we buy it. It must be something that really appeals personally, or be significant in some way. This year we purchased a 40 Ford Convertible that pioneering hot rodder and author Don Montgomery built for his wife. It's a real sleeper, street racer. Being able to drive them, is a MUST, unless they are really rare and for show only.

Below is a photo of my farm when this board opened, and a small number of cars in inventory. The numbers have dwindled significantly. Here's why:

The little red car on the end, is The Flame. It's a fully custom Henry J, and took legendary race and custom car designers Holynski Bros. of N.Y. 7 years to build. My Dad bought it over 45 years ago. It rarely gets shown, but has been a favorite of George Barris and Gene Winfield. We'll take it to Canada's biggest concours in a few weeks. These are the cars we keep now. This is one of the first photos taken of it, when it was completed, and one of the builder's sons is coming to the show to see it, because it has meaning to him. Made with his father's hands.

I batted 0 for 2 at the auction in Auburn, Indiana yesterday though. Demand for these cars, have never been lower....

I'll be keeping what's left though, because my family still cares about what their grandfather built. Even if you were to gift them to museums, they don't want them, because of insurance and maintenance costs. It's a systemic problem now, across all art forms and for all collectors world wide, in this throw away world.

It's a challenge, and I don't expect to lose this one.

The robin's egg blue caddy reminds me of the girl across the street's first car--- her Dad's philosophy was it was probably bigger than anything she was liable to run into....and bigger is better.

After seeing more wrecks than I care to remember, I think he was right.

One of the reasons I have Molly drive a Crew Cab pick-up.

40 Ford convertible....sweeeeet

As for a Henry J---
in high school one kid had one that would pop a wheelie in the parking lot---always a show there

Too bad I have a beer budget.......and sometimes that is more like a lemonade budget LOL

lol I drive a 2008 Mini Cooper S now. Great for zipping around the curvy, hilly roads here.

Remember the 80's, when everything was big, and not just hair?

Another one we had. My son in an Isotta Fraschini. I can't remember the model year, but the car belonged to the German Ambassador to Italy, during WWII.

I miss that little Australian Terrier, he was a great mouse hunter. lol

Also, from the 80's or 90's. My folks in their Deusenberg, winning best of show at Meadowbrook Hall, Rochester, Michigan.

It's a long way, from the 50's. A clutch blew on a race car my Dad was working on. Shattered his leg. He was 6 weeks in the hospital, and a plumber at the time. There was no unemployment, no union benefits and only "bums" would accept welfare then. So, as soon as they gave him crutches, he'd go to scrap yards with his old pickup truck, pull starters or any part that he thought he could unseize or fix. Fix them, and sell them to support us.

Franklin County's 2 Lanes will keep you awake

Drivers not as bad as St Louis or "HomeofToto"
(never know if they are going to drive 30 or 130) but there are enough people that think they are in a hurry and that they just have to pass or pull out.

HWY 185 would be a good road for your Mini but I would hate to see the aftermath if a farm truck decided it needed his lane and part of your lane also

The last long weekend, I was headed into town while everyone else was headed to the cottage, when a Ford Dually pulled out to pass in my lane. So, 10-4 on that, and the trunk space is minimal. I use hubby's truck for grocery shopping.

No that's the right height. Here it is now, with better wheels, new top and boot.

Here's the interior of 34. I have been waiting for the headcases to find out that Henry was a Nazi sympathizer, and cry out to ban all Fords. This one's gone, but I dated a guy when I was young that had one, so I had a soft spot for it.

I would be hard pressed to pick either the 34 or the 36 as having the classiest front end......for a Ford

So, this is the biggest race day, at my home track. It's 48 years since my Dad's driver perished in our division, so I always keep in touch, ya' know?

Sometimes it's hard not to. A couple of years back, I came out of Costco in desert, and parked beside my van down there was this black Harley. I load my groceries into the van, then notice that the decals advertising an old friend's saloon. A couple of days later, I find out from another friend, that it was actually the saloon owner's bike. Literally, I missed him by inches, and maybe if I had have waited around, only minutes. He's from Maine, I just never know who I will run into down there.

Do you remember when I passed on my condolences on President Bush's death, and said the he and Mrs. Bush were frequent visitors to a friend's bar, with this photo?

Today, a 17 year old won our biggest race of the season, breaking an age record that stood for decades!!!!

Here is a photo of my old friend and the new kid in town, earlier tonight.

That old friend has also written a book, which Dale Jr. refers to as his favorite book.

Also, this year, for the first time ever, this young lady won a feature race in a big block.

It's not so rare that this happens at tracks all over the U.S., what is rare, is that the cars are so expensive and few, that you have to be so fast and so competitive, just to get a ride.

Out of 12 races, there have been 11 different winners this year, and that speaks volumes about how the future looks for the division. For the first time in years, car counts aren't receding, and no one single driver dominated all year, helping to pull in fans to the track.

I am over the moon for these kids' success. Just like the look on my old friend's face....relieved and humbled by their presence in the sport.

One more sold....

And the Henry J brought home a bit of hardware of its own, while raising $500,000. for new research on a non-invasive ultra sound treatment for Alzheimer's.

And speaking of rockets, and people with dangerous careers. The signature is unusual, right? It belongs to Colonel Chris Hadfield. He is Canada's first Commander of the International Space Station.
