Your having a senior moment and forgetting the 2005 - 2008 years. While there was a reason for it, they were still some very bad teams (post-Pronger)...
As far as who you would build around, I would pick the best young, proven, tough defenseman I could find. Teams win with Pronger's, Stevens, Lidstrom, Robinson, Keith, Blake, Langway, Coffey, Potvin, Orr, etc... It all starts there...
