Fly fishing-how hard is it?

Have a full day guided charter for 2 coming up in the gulf of mexico.Got lucky,I won it,something I could never afford.

Is it realistic to spend a few hours of it to try to learn flyfishing?I've never even held a fly rod,but can hold my own with other types of fishing.Don't want to waste much time on a once in a lifetime trip for me,but the guide has the gear and it my be a good time to try it out.

Just the basics of casting and the mechanics of learning it.

Re: Fly fishing-how hard is it?

Learning to cast a fly line isn't that hard--learning to do it accurately and at a distance in a short period of time for a 1 day charter

Maybe not the best idea........ Just sayin

I haven't fished the salt but friends that have have said you have to deal with wind and be able to pick it up and put it down where the guide tells you, when he tells you

A good river/stream fly fisher deals with these at times but the salt is another story

If I was going to try it , I'd head to Hargrove's and see if he could help me do a crash course or refer me to someone who could

Don't want to rain on your parade but you might want to stay with spin or bait casting gear at least to start catching fish.

Maybe some of the hardcore fly rod guys could give you a better idea of what your up against

Good luck

Snook on any rod is cool...been getting redfish the last 2 weeks on shrimp and spinning reel/rod...slot is 18-27 inches...last dozen or so all over...just saying...but its a blast.

I think Master Wu as usual is wise - I think it would be pretty tough to pick it up that quick.

If the guide has the gear take a few minutes and let him show you how to cast. After you have tried it for a bit go back to regular fishing. Its a great opportunity to see if you like it.

It's really not hard to do and a fun way to catch fish. Might as well give it a go while you have the chance.

Whenever I want...it's good for a year.I've gotta decide what I want to go after, and base it on that.

That is awesome.. and a real tough decision!! I think I might have to pick one of the bigger marlin species myself..

Re: Fly fishing-how hard is it?

If you want fish for the freezer get some mahi mahi and wahoo or grouper. The marlin would be fun and so is tarpon out of Boca Grande.
