Etling is off a little in her numbers. Its closer to 300 total of those places. Yeah the MDC has been too heavy handed in a lot of areas but I have to stand with them on this one. Cant see letting 300 or so breeders/shooting pens endanger the wild herds with their science project freakazoids and their diseases while half a million hunters, and tens of thousands of landowners and a billion dollar industry is endangered by those guys when one of their science projects fails and infects the local wild herds. I know that their arguement is the penned deer got it from the wild herd but out of the 35,000 or so wild ones that have been tested statewide, the only positive cases have come from outside the fence in the infected area. Pretty straight forward if you ask any reasonable person. What sucks is the protocol that goes into effect when a cwd deer is discovered... sampling of the herd in a 5 mile radius around the area where it is found. How would you like it if they came on your property and started killing off deer to test because some guys herd was infected? What does that do to your hunting and property values? meanwhile the guy goes bankrupt, walks away and you take the loss.If a hog opperation has a spill and it causes a fish kill they are held responsible but not so when a deer farmer comes up with an infected genetic freak. MDC is requesting that new places be double fences and elimimating the import of deer to MOMO, something that I dont find heavy handed at all in this instance and actually less that what I think ought to be done.
