My sons...

Since this is sports related I will post here. Last night, both my sons called some high school basketball games together, they both have been doing it for awhile, but it was a first for them to ref games together. It killed me not to go, but I had other duties that kept me home.

I coached both boys in little league basketball, both went on to play junior high and high school basketball. When they were old enough, both started calling little league games with me. Now they have taken it too another level.

Sean has called some district and even regional playoff games, Aaron has some big district games he will call this year...I missed not being their last night but am proud of them both, giving back to the game (plus it pays good). My phone lit up last night after the games, both of them criticizing the other, it was fun adding fuel to the fire...my knees can't take it, otherwise I might just try to join them.

Always enjoyed officiating ... almost as much as coaching. 90% of the problem officials (refs, umps, etc..) have with people are the result of poor people skills. You can diffuse so many incidents by having a good rapport with the fans, players and coaches. Then again there are 10% that are just A-holes and nothing you say or do will make a difference. Those are the people that get red-carded, tossed, ejected or if I was feeling really good, I would just embarrass the hell out them and let them sit there, looking like a fool to everyone else. Then I usually got dressed down later for it by whoever was in charge. But is was usually worth it.

I hope your boys find that groove and officiate for the love of the game and the fun interaction with the fans, players and coaches... If they're in it for the money or a power trip, I pity the teams they officiate... Best of luck to them. I hope you get to see them together soon!!

Re: My sons...

Very cool Dan!

I ended up being a USA Swimming Official when Grif was doing his thing. I was never any good at it and couldn't really take it seriously because.....well....it was swimming.

We had one meet where some people we used to call handicapped were competing. The head handicapped coach got all of the officials together and demanded that his people be judged on their stroke the same as any able bodied swimmer. All of the officials took it deadly serious, like they did everything, because, you know, their damn kid is going to the Olympics.... while I tried to figure out why we had to be stupid and race people with one arm or whatever against people with two arms......the whole thing just seemed dumb to me.

I played along for about 5 or 6 events and finally just got fed up how absurd the whole thing was. A one-legged swimmer was in my lane and after she touched the wall I put up my hand to signal a stroke infraction. The head official asked me what I saw and without even cracking a smile I said, "Improper kick". She just stared at me for about 5 seconds and then walked away. The official next to me almost had to be carried off the deck he was laughing so hard.

Swimming is stupid.
