What's in the Fridge?

It's about quittin' time, and I'm thirsty.
This got me wondering what everybody's stocked up on.
If you were to show up at the house tonight, I could offer you a Bud (can or bottle), a Rolling Rock bottle, or a Red Hook SummerRye. There might even be a Boulevard Pale Ale in the little fridge downstairs.
Whatchoo got?

Re: What's in the Fridge?

That would be my alcohol-dedicated garage refrigerator. I got most of a case of Coors (original, not light) for lawn-mowing beer. I got Sam Adams Boston Lager, Boston Ale, Hefeweisen, Cherry Wheat, Pale Ale, and Summer Ale.

I got about 3 gallons left of 3 y.o. homebrewed India Pale Ale on tap. I got a bottle of Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey (which I prefer to Jameson's or Bushmill's).

The wife's got a bag-in-a-box of Franzia "Chillable Red" wine, which I actually think is pretty good. Nobody ever said we have good taste.

So come on by, Forsythian - I've got refreshments. We can talk about how upper Bull Shoals has turned into a carp hole.

well Forsythian, I could offer some Anchor Steam, some Henry Weinhard assortments, some Coors banquet beer, a couple of assorted porters, some bourbon, some single malt scotch in the freezer, some Bacardi rum, some Capt. Morgan spiced rum, some Bud, some Red Stripe, some Guinness and some Snake River Lager, or a Coke and some milk, I might even have a few assorted fruit juices

Come on over, I've got just about every flavor of AB brew made and not-yet-made, a couple different homebrews and Anchor Liberty Ale. Liberty, have you tried that one yet--dayum it's a good brew. A balance of amber malt and some notable hop action! Forsythian, if you can get your hands on this one at the Brown Derby, it's well worth a try!

As a reformed and recovering Californian, I'm real familiar with Anchor products. Anchor Steam Beer, Liberty Ale, Anchor Porter, Summer Beer, their annual Christmas Beer - it's all good if you like HOPS.

But the creme de la creme is still Anchor Old Foghorn Barleywine.

well I don't know if it contributes to my health much, but I live behind a well stocked, upper end liquor store, across and down from a brewery, two doors from a bar/pizzeria and caddy corner to that another full-service bar and a well supplied grocery store is on the next block over. Re: What's in the Fridge?

That must have been quite an experience for you, P.D.

So, they've been fartin' around with this guy through 4 or 5 trials for how many years now? And, he's been sentenced to death 4 times now but the high court threw two of those out?

The U.S. has far more lawyers per capita than any other country in the world, in spite of the fact that less than 3% of the population ever gets arrested for a felony.

That means the small criminal part of the population is a valuable commodity for the criminal "justice" system. They HAVE to keep cycling those same people through the system over and over again - because every time they cycle through lawyers make money, lots of it.

IF this guy finally gets executed, it'll be a couple of decades from now after who-knows how many more briefs and appeals. Lawyers will get paid $150-$250 an hour of tax money for all of it.

I didn't mean to get into this rant on the Brewing forum, so I'll just have a beer and forget about it now.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Sorry to bring it up on the "What's in the Fridge" thread. Trying to make sense of it all requires alcohol, so I thought it belonged here.

Yes, Oz, you are right. The cost is mind boggling -- an industry unto itself. This guy is getting 4 trials when it is all said and done. One of the defenses' key arguments was the guys childhood -- no doubt, it was messed up, but I listened carefully and kept an open mind. So they called to the stand a childhood development expert, Dr. Wanda Draper who has been on CNN, Oprah, written books, etc. She's not even a real MD. She makes $125/hr plus expenses just going to various capital murder trials in several states to do "consultation work", give testimony, and try to explain a murderers' behavior. Not condone it, but to "explain" it. On this case alone, she has made over $6,000 and counting, for what amounts to a couple days work. And she's done HUNDREDS of cases like it in the past few years in our state and others, all on the taxpayers dime. I'm sure her card is in many public defenders rolodex. If you don't have a defense -- call Dr. Draper! Under cross examination, the prosecuting attorney had a field day with her, reduced her testimony to a pile of rubble. Kinda felt sorry for her.

Ken - yep, being sequestered did suck. But they fed us pretty good. I think I gained 10 lbs.

If Sierra Nevada beers are some of your favorites, you're a hophead all right.

I like SN brews, they're well-made - but my tastes run more to the malty side, and that ain't what SN does.

I wonder how the hop shortage is going to affect SN. Best I can figure, they use about half the hops in America.

Turtle - I bought 2 of those Sierra Nevada Hop Harvests, and drank them both in one sitting(equivalent to 4 beers). Had a wicked hangover the next day which I can only attribute to the strong hop content. I'm officially off of hoppy beers for a while. That one was just too much.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

I'm not knocking Sierra Nevada-type beers here - they're well made and some folks have a taste for high doses of hops. Heck, I've got a friend whose email address is "ibu90" - and 90 International Bittering Units is about enough to pit glass.

But in commercial brewing, hops are cheap and malt is expensive. Taken down to a homebrewing level, 50 cents worth of hops will make a helluva difference in 5 gallons of beer, but it takes 5 bucks worth of malt to make much of a difference.

That's why 95% of specialty, microbrewery, and brewpub beers have extra hops but not extra malt. They keep the brews thin, then hop 'em up for flavor - 'cause that's real cheap to do. Michelob's new Marzen is kind of an extreme example of that kind of cost-cutting, but they're all doing it.

What's hard to find is commercial beer with higher gravity (malt content) and a reasonable price. There aren't many of those.

I don't know if I've ever had a SN beer... I'm gonna have to try one of those hoppies myself.

I just broke into my case of Little Yeoman's APA last night... watched the boys in Cabool bottle it for me on Friday and have been letting it sit at room temp ever since (recommended for carbonation?). Hoo boy it's good stuff, and I'm not really an ale-guy. It's gonna go quick.

I've seen around town where they have the case of Michelob samplers... I'll probably pick one up this weekend for grins. Also, I'm not a huge Boulevard guy, but I picked up a sixer of "Bob's 47" a couple of weeks ago and it was great! Ofcourse, I haven't seen it since...

Re: What's in the Fridge?

It's been an interesting journey, this craft brew thang. Prior to this forum, I was pretty much Bud and Bud light. I liked Bud for it's "full flavor." Two years later, and a chitload of brews, homebrews, and extra pounds under the belt, I've turned into a hophead and an ale freak. Forsythian, you mentioned that you aren't much of an "ale-guy," but to be honest with you, I can hardly find a lager that interests me. The Czech ones are probably the best, but even if you can find one that isn't skunked from its journey over here, it still tastes real grassy to me. Ales are just a lot more complex and wide-ranged in my opinion. And Bud...I can hardly drink one down now. Not saying that any beer is bad, in fact, just the opposite. It's just that some brews rock my taste buds a helluva lot more than others while they make someone else

As far as the yeoman APA...let that chit sit 3 weeks at room temp in a dark spot and it will be in it's prime!

Well that's it, everyone has different tastes. Myself, I like full-bodied German-style lagers best but there's a whole lotta other beer styles I like too.

Back in the day, I won a whole bunch of homebrewing competitions. I had a homebrew shop at my disposal, wins were good for advertising, and I ended up with a wall full of ribbons, mugs, and trophies - some from national competitions including the GABF.

One of my secrets (which I sure couldn't have told at the time) is that I lagered a lot of "ales". I won with a whole bunch of Pale Ales, Stouts, Porters, India Pale Ales, Russian Imperial Stouts, etc. - and though the ingredients belonged to those beer categories, I often cold-lagered them with liquid lager yeast cultures instead of ale yeast.

I got a kick out of it at the time - even professional brewers who were judging on the national scale never figured that out. I'd get scoresheet comments like "extremely crisp, clean, and clear". Well yeah - if you cold-lager a Pale Ale for three months, it'll do that.

So far as my recipes submitted with the beer entries, well, I might'a lied some on those. Now you know my big secret - my own little steroid scandal. Ya think I'll have to give those trophies back?

Anchor Steam out of necessity ale'd lagers, and it still lives today. Its a little to hoppy for me, given the body, but it has a good following.
I can't say I've had an outstanding beer that came from any brewery larger than a Micro. The beer from Micro's can vary considerably however.
One of my kin bought me a beer of the month, or something to that effect, which was 3 different beers a month, a pair of each. It was very interesting and while it was predominately ales, they all maintained a unique identity.

The main thing is to get the wort temp as low as you can before pitching the yeast. If you've got a wort chiller, that's great. If not, run cold water around the brewpot or whatever to get it down to BELOW 70 before adding yeast.

Just a few degrees makes a big difference in how yeast works and what flavors it puts into beer. A colder, slower fermentation is always best.

Pitch your yeast in the primary fermenter and keep it away from direct light and in the coolest place you can. When the foam goes down enough that you can see the surface of the beer, rack it into a secondary fermenter, and again keep it cool. After a couple of weeks in the secondary, it'll be ready to bottle.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

I've never attempted ales at lager temps. Might have to try that one.

HB's right. To achieve my lager temps (w/lager yeasts), I just took my basement fridge and put a cheap, christmas light timer on the plug. Regular old fridges seem to keep a temp of about 38-42F, which is a bit too cold for lagering, so I fiddled with the timer to get it to where I was keeping a fairly constant 50-52F.

Ozark
(member)
11/03/07 04:27 AM
Re: What's in the Fridge?

Nah, 38-42 degrees is perfect for lagering with a real lager yeast. You can't get yeast to start at that temp, so start it at about 60-65 and when you've got a good krausen (foam on top), in the 'fridge it goes.

Same with ales, get the yeast started in the 60's, then the ideal ferment temp is 50-55 degrees.

Liberty, so far as how cold - I've cold-lagered here in MO in an unheated shed in the winter. The top 6" of the beer froze solid in the carboy a couple of times, but when it thawed out the airlock started bubbling again. That made some real good beer, too.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Ozark,
Thanks for the info. I got around to actually thinking about brewing Sunday and realized I wasn't even close to starting. I hadn't cleaned anything yet, and I didn't know how big my brew pot was. So I settled for doing some prelim stuff and figured out my brew pot was 3 gal.

I got a wort chiller and luckily my well water comes up from 535' below, so it's good and cold (I'm guessing in the 50's). Should be no problem dropping the wort temp quickly.

I'm going to try and brew this oktoberfest up this week before I leave to go hunting. My goal was a drinkable brew for thanksgiving, but I've screwed around too long for that. Just have to enjoy it at Christmas time.

Edit: Need to stay on topic... I just drank the last of all the beers which was a Smithwick Irish. Next best thing is some Peach Cider I brought in from Colorado. Damn good stuff

Ozark, I will definitely be giving you a call here one of these days... a QC sampling session will sound pretty good after a hard day's work of shopping in the big city... maybe I'll bring ya something from the big Derby.

Guys, there's a little shop in Branson that had the Schlafleys Octoberfest and APA... I got the Octoberfest but I was holding out for the "dry hopped" APA, is that a separate beer, or am I mixing metaphors?

The dry hopped APA I got last night was in a light green carrier with hops all over it. I don't think they make more than one APA, so jump all over it

Forsythian, they do make a regular APA as well as the dry hopped. I think the regular one is in an orange colored sixer and like Haus said, the dry hopped is covered in green hops. The regular APA is decent, but the dry hopped is friggin awesome!

Knowing I was going to run out of APA last night, on the way home I bought a sixer of Schlafly Pale Ale. Whoa!! Guess I got spoiled on the APA cause the pale ale is nothing like it. I choked down two and called it good. Don't know if I can handle finishing off the rest.

Pretty bland on body and has no finish. Kinda sense a burnt taste. Not much hop flavor and I was hoping for some more knockout hops. Kinda like fishin, you gotta try em to find the good ones

Re: What's in the Fridge?

I just sanitized bottles, a keg, carboys, autosiphon, bottle filler, etc. on the ol' fish cleaning table. I brought all those inside to my shop.

Tonight I'm going to bottle 5 gallons of the Yellow Dog Lager and keg the other 5 gallons of it. Then, I'm going to rack the next batch, Wheat Bock, from primaries to secondaries. After that, I'll be ready to brew again tomorrow.

The hops jumped up on me in the Yellow Dog Lager. Only 7.3 HBU's, but it's pretty hoppy - and while I like it that way, friends who think BUUUUD is beer won't like it.

I'm going to try brewing Yellow Dog again in the morning. This time, I'll cut the S.G. down to 1.036 and maybe just wave a hop pellet over the boiling brewpot.

I'm looking for a good "lawnmower beer" for the spring - one that won't get me too hammered while I'm catching crappie.

btw - Today I put Stabil in the gas in my fishing boat, tractor, mowers, and tiller - ran them a little, then turned the gas off and let the motors run dry. Have you guys done that? Ya oughta.

Me personally? Experience from my (much) younger days says somewhere between 1/2 gallon and 1 gallon - though unplanned eruptions sometimes occured when nearing capacity.

As per homebrewing - I've got 15 12-bottle cases of 22-oz. bottles, 3 primary fermenters, 4 secondary fermenters, and 3 five-gallon kegs. If everything was full at once, that's a little over 80 gallons of beer.

I've only brewed 50 gallons in 7 varieties so far, so I've got plenty of spare capacity. At my usual consumption rate of two 22-oz. bottles per day, 50 gallons would last me 5 months - but sharing it cuts that time down, of course.

I'll brew all winter and try to have most everything full at the end of March - when my attention turns to fishing and other things. Then that'll carry me over until cool (brewing) weather next year.

Moderate, downright moderate.

I just have a hard time finding Hamm's when I want some.
Its not that I really prefer the beer, but its as close as I can get to some of the old pardners long departed that I used to drink it with.
There was nothing quite as good as the cans of Hamm's that had rolled around in the seat of the pickup while we went to move tree stands or rearrange goose decoys.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Hamm's Beer - from the Land of Sky Blue Waters, with the cartoon advertising bear. Man, I hadn't thought about that stuff for years.

There used to be a cheapo beer made in Los Angeles called Brew 102. The story was that they tried 101 recipes and couldn't get it quite right - but boy, Brew 102 was just perfect. It'd give you the chits, I remember that.

I miss the bottles from some of those old beers. Most of them were available in fat one-quart recappable bottles, 12 to the case. That meant a lot less bottle-washing than with 12-ouncers when I started homebrewing - and if I open a beer I'll want at least a quart anyway.

I never heard of Mabel either, unless "Give me a Black Label Mabel" was a Carling Black Label commercial.

In college I remember picking up a case of "Frankenmuth" beer for a camping trip because it was 'way cheap. That was horrible stuff - we got what we paid for.

Nearly all oddball-brand American beers are made by the major brewers, and that was true even before so many mergers happened. The thing about cheap American brews is that they're made with a lot of corn syrup substituting for barley malt. Corn is a whole lot cheaper, and it makes the beer "lighter" in color and taste.

Most all American beers have a lot of corn syrup, and the cheap brands have even more of it. Corn syrup is the same as corn sugar, and homebrewers pretty much quit making "sugar beers" a long time ago.

It was Carling's, I guess the ads were confined to the Midwest. The ads ran in MO, but I never saw the beer, at least not on the west side.
There was a Jax's beer in OK and TX, that I know of, that had some funny commercials, but the beer was mediocre, like Coors.

Ya know, my mainstream fishing-trip lawn-mowing beer is Coors. Not Coors Light, original Coors.

There's no preservatives in Coors, and it's supposed to be refrigerated all the way from the brewery. The closer you are to Golden, CO, the better it is. When they bring free drinks in Las Vegas casinos, I always get Coors - it's real fresh and good there.

I like Pete Coors' politics, too. He's spent a lot of money over the years fighting against gun control. Unfortunately, Miller Brewing gobbled up Coors a couple of months ago and I know how they do things. They'll gladly cheapen the recipe if they can save a penny a barrel - so I expect Coors quality to go down.

Everybody's taste is different. Personally, I think all Anheuser beers are real "mediocre" - but that's just me.

I always get Corona, because they put a slice of lime in the neck and I squeeze the juice out and push it into the bottle. Good stuff, but I've never tried it with any other brand so it might be the Lime.
Coors is just too sweet for me, or at least thats the impression I always have. Its not a watery beer though, like some, including the "Silver Bullets".

For Messican beers I like Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Pacifico, and Negro Modelo. Corona, Sol, Supremo - uh, no.

Because of the clear bottles, Corona is especially bad about getting light-struck. Anywhere from the brewery to here if it's been in sunlight or flourescent light for even 10 minutes, it's skunky.

I have a buddy who spent his career at ab...held the BM title too....his opinion is that sales can kill a good beer...once the small brewers get poular their sales go up and they lose the quality they once had....and pretty much same thing from the big brew houses too....way too inconsistent with their production quality.

Couple new beers I tried recently:

Bell's Two-Hearted Ale: pretty good. The Lukas boyz had it rated an A+, but I'd give it a B+. Lots of hop flavor but not the strong citrus grapefruit kind I like. Almost more like orange peel

Blue Moon Summer Ale: also pretty good, but a little on the sweet side with all the clover honey in it. I

O'Fallon 5 day IPA: had on tap at a local pizza joint. Good locally made brew but not enough hops. This is their version a dry-hopped IPA/APA.

I picked up a sixer of the two Sam Adams 2007 Longshot brewing competition winners yesterday, and tried one bottle of each last night.

It's a Wheat Bock and a Grape Pale Ale this time, and they're both real good beers, of course. One of the 2006 winners was an Old Ale that I thought was one of the best brews I've ever had - and neither of these is as good as that one, IMO.

The Wheat Bock recipe was from some guy in Illinois, and the Grape Pale Ale is by a female in Hawaii. When we had the brew shop, I noticed that only about 2% of homebrewers are women - but the few women who get into the hobby tend to be real, real good at it.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Took a little shopping spree at Lukas this week. Here's a review of the first one:

Double Dog Double Pale Ale
Flying Dog Brewery out of Denver

A really tasty, quality double pale ale. Pours a solid slightly foggy copper-amber color with a huge billowy head. Nose is delicious, tons of sweet caramel and piney hops. The taste hits you hard: tons of sweet caramel malt up front, then segues into a very nice, drying pine hop finish.

Then this b!tch at 10.5% alcohol and 85 IBUs flat out assaults your taste buds and leaves you dazed and confused. A four-pack of these is kinda like spending a smack-induced evening with a sex craved Courtney Love. Was it worth it? It feels good while it’s happening. But then you wake up in the morning only to realize she’s bitten off your shmeckle. And you wonder if the bright red “THANKS” on the bathroom mirror was written with her candy apple red lipstick or your own fresh blood.

Not for the faint of heart.

Have no idea what we drank there, just remember it being real good. Do remember a full dress scottish band, kilts, bagpipes, drums, the works was in there. We sat outside and as they were leaving, people were chanting for them to play. They passed a hat around for $$. The band stopped right next to our table and they played for 20 mins. Pretty awesome for my hick ass to hear that in person. The pub was cool. I think that was before they moved to Denver and got big. I love their beers, just scared of the artwork...

Re: What's in the Fridge?

WTF is with brewers adding cloves to beer.

If anybody wants 'em, I got 4 Leffe Belgian Blonde Ales...
"Savor the Mystery of the Ages" "Award winning Leffe Blonde is a full-bodied deep golden ale that is surprisingly subtle and delicate"
BS!
My first taste was a bit interesting, hints of vanilla, subtle hoppy bitterness. By the third swallow I realize I'm tasting HEAVY cloves. By the end of the first glass, the cloves are overpowering.
A second bottle confirms it was no fluke, #@$%~!! effin cloves. There ought to be a law, if ya put em in, label 'em!

Re: What's in the Fridge?

I'm with ya on the clove thing Forsythian. Seems like most Belgians have this and from what I've read, it actually is a flavor that comes from the yeast. If I suspect that a brew I wanna try might have this, I'll go to beeradvocate.com and read a review on it. If anyone mentions clove, I pass on it fo sho.

Boulevard Smokestack Double Wide IPA

Hit the little wine shop next to the Branson Kmart today, and lo! there was some Schafley dry hop APA... I grabbed their entire whopping stock of 3 sixers, along with some New Belgian 1554 and Goose Island red ale.
While there, we had a little hops session trying out a new shipment of Boulevard Smokestack Double Wide IPA. (It's twister-proof!) Good sales tactic, two glasses later I added a 750 ml bottle of the hop bomb to the shopping cart.
mmmmmmmmm that stuff has an over-the-top bodaciousness that is a Mariah Carey, Salma Hayek & Vida Guerra 3-way. Can you have too much of a good thing? Is it possible? You only have two hands, you only have so many taste buds. The Schafley tastes like a (good) lager after the double-wide.

But, big curves come at a big price... friggin' $7.50 per bottle is a penny a mL... so hopefully tomorrow my taste buds will have forgot those high society trappings and my fridge full of girl next door will satisfy.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Great write up Forsythian

We musta been thinkin along the same hop-lines this weekend as I picked up three new brews...one of them being the Boulevard Double Wide IPA. I haven't tried her, but seein as I'm a big fan of 3-ways, I'm really lookin forward to it!

I did try Southern Tier's Big Red ale. It comes in a 650 ml bottle with a red tractor on it. Very similar to Rogue's Dead Guy ale and at 9.5% gets ya there in a hurry. Although, like the Boulevard, $6.50 a bottle sucks. Also Picked up a sixer of Schlafley's Export IPA. It's a seasonal brew which really rocks! Similar to the dry hopped APA, but with a chitload more malt to really balance things out. The malt also bumps this bad boy up to 8% ABV but you don't notice it until it's too late. Hopefully by then you've already made your calls to Vida, Mariah and Salma! I think it was $7 for the sixer.

Finished up the Pauls Pine Sol APA a few days ago, so I headed up to Lukas and under orders from the Mrs to get something she likes as well, got me a 1/6th barrel of Sam Adams Summer Ale. Didn't notice it was a wheat beer until I got home and went to hook it up, but its not bad at all. Pours clear/golden and doesn't have that banana/clove spice that most wheat beers do. I like it, and its a nice change of pace from all the hops that was wreckin my plumbing.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Good for you, Forsythian. Any time you can pull off a trip like that and call it "work" - go for it.

Under "little-known facts and who cares" - I think it's kinda fun how the Messicans learned to brew beer.

Several years prior to WWI, around 1914 or so, the Messicans were secret buddies with the Germans. The war was just starting and the Krauts figured the U.S. would get into it, so they made some plans in advance. A note called the Zimmerman Letter was finally intercepted and made public, in which Kaiser Wilhelm promised Mexico the southwestern states back in return for invading the U.S. when war came. They kinda backed off on that deal after the note got published.

Anyway, in those years Germany built up Mexico's factories including designing and building a bunch of breweries. German brewmasters came over to teach the Messicans to run 'em, so they learned to brew beer German style. Those recipes and brewing methods still linger in beers like Dos Equis Amber, Pacifico, Bohemia, and others. Interesting, I think.

That Blvd Double-Wide (it's twister-proof!) comes in a single big bottle, maybe about 750 mls. And, I'm gonna say I paid 7 or 8 bucks for it, but man is it a hop-bomb!
I like the Goose Island IPA too, but if you all can find O-dell's IPA I say BUY BUY BUY! I know it's on the Westside, and it's in the big Brown Derby in Springfield, but I don't know if you can get it in ol' St. Lou.

Apart from my hop stock, I've slowed down on the darks here of late... I've got a couple of straggler bottles here and there of 1554, Bully Porter, Dry Stout and Coffee Stout.

In their place I've been on a bit of a red ale kick.
Goose Island makes a decent red ale, but I gotta say I like Boulevard's Irish Red Ale a bit better. Seems to finish cleaner.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Tried a couple of new ones last night...
The first was a Schafley Scotch-style ale. I'm not a big scotch-drinker... most of my scotch experiences have been late at night when it's time for a pissing contest, so I'm not sure why I bought this other than curiosity. This was my first try with this beer style, and I don't much like it. Tasted kind of fizzy, and I had the impression I was drinking a "flavored" beer rather than a genuine style.
Gave me heartburn too.
The othern was Samuel Smith's IPA. It was pretty good... it has that thicker creamier mouth feel to it, which I guess is a British-ale thing. Personally, I prefer the American PA characteristic of being a bit more crisp. Good hop character was there, but not as hoppy as O'dells and etc. It might be that the "thicker" aspect to it masks some of the hops. For me, there were hints of bock or Octoberfest character to it... I would say it was definitely more complex than the APA's and IPA's I've been drinking lately. Whether that's good or bad, I don't know... but I don't think I'll be switching from my Schafley's any time soon.

cheers

Man this St. Rogue dry-hopped Amber Ale is one gem of a beer. Upfront hop aroma, then Rich malt followed by an even stronger counterpunch of hops, but not at all bitter and a smooth finish. Good head retention and lacing all the way to the bottom of the pint. Its Schlafly APA only 50% more of everything. Do I want another? yes, I will.

I've had it. Its good stuff. Very smooth and hazy golden. Strong too, I think the ABV was up around 9^% or more. I thought needed a little more hops to balance it out, but I haven't had any other double pilsners to compare it to.

I like a bench capper because it'll cap most anything. A bench capper doesn't have to grab a collar on the neck, and foreign beer bottles (like German 16.9 ouncers) have different size collars that keep two-lever cappers from working anyway.

Lots of guys bottle homebrew in champagne bottles, too. Those are good big bottles that work just fine with a bench capper. Ya might want to consider an equipment upgrade.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

The Mountain Dew bottles have a fairly pronounced collar... I'd guess it might work better than the bud bottle. I think it'll work... I'm gonna check out Ebay vs. Northern brewer for a capper I reckon. The next trick to this float trip deal is to find a beer "glass" that isn't glass... mebbe polycarbonate.

I'm with you Paul... if a guy wants to drink Bud, a can is just fine. I don't get it. Anyways, sounds like you're livin the good life with that kegerator!

BTW... I gotta say I like the Paulaners Octoberfest much better than Ayinger's. Still, this time of night, I go back to Schlafley dry hop apa like a moth to the flame... dayummmm I cannot get enough of that elixir!

Old Foghorn Barleywine - from the makers of Anchor Steam, first time its been available in Missouri, Lukas has a small supply of it, $17 per 6 pack though, but just had to try it. Super rich and sweet, but not gross like some barleywines i've had, this one was smooth. One bottle made me dizzy.

Czar Russian Imperial Stout - from Avery Brewing in Boulder. 22 oz bomber and 10.77% ABV. Almost as good as the Russian Imperial I brewed last year (Oz's recipe). All kinds of flavors going on: toffee, roasted malt, fruit candy, chocolate, almonds, and a smooth hop-finish.

I've been sampling the Flying Dog stuff lately...
The "Gonzo" Imperial Porter- might be the most opaque beer I've ever sampled... smooth though. 7.8% ABV, lots of licorice, nice hop balance, all kinds of subtleties. The last pull tastes different from the first, if you know what I mean! About $9 for a 4-pack.
Flying Dog's IPA is real real smooth... I like it better than O'dells, it doesn't bite as hard, better balance. It almost approaches a lawn-mower beer, it's super clear and more "crisp" than most IPA's I've had... not overdone. about $9 a sixer.

Sam Adams Imperial Pilsner. This stuff is great, one for the true hop-head.They sell it by the four pack and Scnhucks had one left. Damn. Also this years Samuel Smiths Winter Welcome. Haven't tried it yet should be good though.

That double dog was hell on wheels, I tell you what.

One of the better beers I've had lately is the Samuel Smith's "Taddy" porter. Very smooth and drinkable.

I've been in a rut lately... drink a couple of Schlafley APAs, then a 1554 or two. Mix it up with Flying Dog APA, and Odell's cutthroat porter.

Boring

Somebody help me out here... what am I missing? Give it to me straight man!

Back from my hophead hiatus.
Picked up a sixer of Bell's Hopslam at Lukas today which is released once a year.
Everything about this beer is extreme...hops=106 IBUs...ABV=10%...price=$17/six pack.
It's the Rocky Balboa of Imperial IPAs cuz it continuously knocks you on your ass but ya just keep gettin' back up and comin' back for more. Won't last long.

I saw it today at the candy store, Turtle. I started to reach for it, but the recession yanked me back like a horsecollar tackle.

I settled for the Torpedo Extra IPA, and judging by the very few lacing rings on my pint glass . . that ship sank very quickly. Good stuff.

Man I should have read this a little more closely Remember hearing about it but couldn't remember what I read Went in and bout a 6 of it and the SN torpedo IPA. Drank a couple of the SN first then popped the top on the Hopslam. Great beer but don't drink the whole 6 at a setting. Might have a little trouble navigating afterwards

Re: What's in the Fridge?

I received a couple of packages today from a friend in SoCal who knows what a beer wasteland I live in here in SW Missouri. He still works in the microbrew industry, and he picked some beers he knew I'd like and included descriptions. Some of them are brewed by people we both know.

Some of these are real insider's beers - hard to find even out there. I'm looking forward to giving these a "quality check":

Alesmith Old Numbskull A barleywine from a San Diego brewery founded by a feller I used to know.

Stone Smoked Porter Stone Brewery kicks ass - every year in the smoked beers category at GABF, Stone and Alaska trade off on which one gets the Gold.

Alaska Smoke Porter Their first batch was made when they got bored and it was the off-season at the salmon processing plant next door. Salmon are smoked over Alder wood, so the brewers borrowed some wood from next door and smoked a bunch of pale malt over it. Many GABF gold medals later, they still do it that way every year.

Alesmith Yulesmith Their traditional holiday offering.

Port Brewing Company (3 beers):

.....The Lost Abbey Abbey Ale aged in wooden barrels.

.....Santa's Little Helper Described as a "fun" Imperial Stout.

.....Lost and Found A strong ale brewed with raisins.

Left Coast Brewing Company Hop Juice A ridiculously hopped APA which actually finds some balance.

Anchor Our Special Ale 2008 They do it every year, but hey, it's Anchor - it's gotta be good.

Anchor Small Beer Described by Anchor employees as "the best beer we don't sell". This is the second sparge run from my favorite, Old Foghorn Barleywine. Interesting.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale OK, we know this one even in Missouri. Sierra Nevada = lotsa hops.

Goose Island Bourbon County Stout Hmmm. Here's something strange. My friend's a professional brewer and he raves about this stuff and gripes about how he can't hardly find it in CA. He calls it the "pinnacle of brewing art". Now, Goose Island is out of Chicago and they got bought by one of the majors (Miller?, Bud?) I've never seen Bourbon County Stout, but I've been unimpressed with other Goose Island flavors. We'll see - if it's that good it might be something I can actually buy around here.

Thats one heck of a haul Ozark. Stone beers are awesome. Wish we could get them in MO...but no...

I think that you will like the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout...sampled two of them over at the Iron Barley a couple weeks ago..very good.

Sipping on a Left Hand Milk Stout at the moment...darn good stuff..Incredibly smooth mouth feel, choclate, a bit of smoke. Not a great head on it, but its really good. Popped a 6er of Left Hand Sawtooth Ale last night..better than average, good balance of malt & hops. I liked that too..

Not in the fridge but in the wine glass at the moment. Amancaya 2007 Malbec/Cab Sauv from Medoza Argentina. It appears to be a collaboration between Lafite Rothschild from France, and Nicolas Catena, one of Argentina's best wine makers.

Every once in a great while you pick up a $20 bottle of wine that is just smack on good...This is one of them. Cheers.

Wine? Isn't that pretty much rotten grape juice?

And you're paying $20 for one bottle? Man, you're going to the wrong place. At WalMart you can get about six bottles for $20 - and of several different kinds, too. I know they got red, white, and pink at least.

Even better, they got that "Delicious Red" bag-in-a-box wine that costs even less than their $3 a bottle kind. It goes down like about a gallon of Grape Kool-Aid then next morning it feels like you got in a wrasslin' match and somebody gouged your right eye out.

Sure glad I could help.

Maybe I could rig up an I.V. of the stuff somehow, so I won't have to go to the trouble of swallowing.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

I'm hoarding that treasure-trove my friend in CA sent me. Right after they came, I drank the bottle of Alaska Smoke Porter. I thought it was real, real good.

Last night, I tried a bottle of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout - that's the one my friend called "the pinnacle of the brewer's art". According to the label, they brewed a super-Stout, then aged it in bourbon barrels.

I love big beers, and at 13% alcohol this one will sure get your attention. Unlike my friend, though, I didn't think the taste was very pleasant.

In fact, I had to drink a bottle of Sam Adams Cream Stout right after, to get the strong oak-and-bourbon taste out of my mouth. G.I.B.C.S. is one I won't be looking for at Brown Derby.

Picked up a case of Sam Adams sampler for $20 this past weekend.

4 bottles of the following:
Boston Lager
Boston Ale
White Ale
Black Lager
Scotch Ale
Honey Porter

Pretty impressed with the Honey Porter and would have to say it's my favorite of the bunch.

Black Lager was excellent as well. Kind of a wimpy little brother to a good stout.

The Scotch Ale says it has malt used in that have been smoked using peat. Couldn't really taste any smokiness, but I was having breakfast at the time and eating some good bacon.. I will say it was very malty tasting.

After all the brews I've tried from Sam Adams, Jim definetly likes his malty brews. I haven't tried a hoppy one yet.

Fresh Schlafly APA, born on date of late April is flowing in frothy rivulets into ice-chilled pint glasses here at South Fork (Dallas Manor) where JR Ewing is still evil, and Sue Ellen the biatch . . . I forget the hot blondes name at the moment, but anyway, yes, the kegerator is once again operational, and all is right with the world.

I picked up a sampler 12-pack of Big Sky beers today, and I'll be giving some of them a taste test tonight. It has 3 bottles each of Moose Drool Brown Ale, Trout Slayer Wheat Ale, Scape Goat Pale Ale, and Big Sky India Pale Ale.

From the same store I got a sixer of Michelob Original Lager. They claim it's their St. Louis recipe from 1896, and it's GOOD.

I first tried Michelob O.L. a couple of weeks ago, and I was surprised that I enjoyed the heck out of it. Major brewers can make real good beer if they want to, and in my opinion this is what mainstream American beer oughta taste like.

If the big boys would only start canning beers like this, I think the whole country would switch over to better quality in time. I doubt they'll do it though - there's probably more profit in the watered-down beer people are used to.

Yep. That's from Big Sky Brewing Co., the ones that made the 12-bottle sampler pack I posted about above. The fact that I still have 9 of the 12 bottles left a week later tells how much I like their beer.

Big Sky Moose Drool is a decent dessert beer. Pound down a couple of IPAs, then drink a Moose Drool... it has a sweet taste after loading up on all those hops.

Not seen the Mad Hatter. I like the Titan, but I like Flying Dog's IPA just as well and it's $3 cheaper. Mad Hatter... maybe some of that will slip through the Griffin gillnet and make its way down here.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Sometimes a beer just hits the spot, along with the right food or whatever.

My wife and I were in Springpatch the other day and we had lunch at Old Chicago near the S. Glenstone WalMart and Home Depot. I stopped there because I noticed their sign - "110 Beers". 30 of the beers are on tap, and 80 are bottled.

We both had a Reuben sandwich - the best one I've ever tasted. Those come with fries, which were extra-good also - and they're so big my wife and I both took half our Reuben and half our fries home and that was our supper too. Two good meals for the price of one.

With lunch, I had a pint of draft Warsteiner Dunkel. Along with that corned beef, kraut, and cheese on rye toasted sandwich it went JUST right. Dang, that was good. That's the first time we'd been to Old Chicago, and I know we'll be stopping there again. Pretty often, if it's up to me.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

I agree Ozark about that Old Chicago deal, one of my favorite chain places.

Also, I found Schlafly beer in my area over the weekend... HyVee has it!

Got a six of the No. 15, got it home and iced down nice, and it's not bad. Pretty mild actually, nothing like the stuff the St. Louie boys brought up to DS3.

After the fourth one, I happened to see the Born On date... June 2008!!!

So I guess I've really never had a Schlafly No. 15, after all. I wonder what one less than a year old is like? LMFAO

Is that long a date common in beer? I thought they pulled em after a certain period of time.

Not a fan of the Schlafly #15 at all. One of the worst they make in my opinion. Maybe it improves with age, but I doubt it.

Been a travellin man of late. Samplin draft beers anywheres they be pourin em.

Southern beers -
Sweetwater Brewing IPA -- tasty, but a bit light on the hops for an imperial i thought. Had quite a few down on the 30-A strip as there wasn't much else to choose from. Mrs. Dallas enjoyed the Sweetwater Blueberry Wheat - had a sip and stuck to my IPA.

Abita Jockamo IPA -- good one. Close to Torpedo, but not quite.

Lion Stout - from Sri Lanka, dam good stout. Full tilt stuff, heavy on the chocolate and toffee, and can only drink about 2 before you want to sleep deeply. Got 7 or 8 left in the fridge.

half-dozen other beers that I can't seem to think of right now

I had some of that Sweetwater IPA when I was in the Charlotesville VA area a couple of months ago... that is a solid offering they have there.
A Sri Lanka stout? How's that for obscure... now we're talking!!

Just got back from a week in Wisconsin... Stuck with Spotted Cow and Leinenkugal Creamy Dark Lagers for the most part. New Glarus Brewing needs to get on board with more more more... more malt and more hops please! Did not get a chance to hit Great Dane for their Imperial... one of my favorites.

Now that I'm back home and settling into my rut, I've stocked up on a case of Single Wide, a sixer each of Sierra Nevada stout and Cutthroat Porter. Also some Peroni lager for the boat.

I've never had that one - but did ya ever notice how former British colonies still tend to brew good English/Irish/Scots beer styles?

I think that's interesting. Beer styles carry on in other unexpected ways too - like with Mexico still making German Oktoberfests 'cause the Krauts built their breweries and taught 'em to brew while trying to get the Mexicans into WWI on the German side.

The original people who started it are all dead, but the preference for certain kinds of beer in different places carries down through the generations. In fact, mainstream American beer started with all those German brewers who immigrated here in the 1870's - hot to trot with that brand-new "lager" brewing process from the homeland.

That stuff's kinda fun to ponder while sipping on a cold one.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Yeah, that is interesting. You don't think of Sri Lanka when you think of beer, but as you said, british colony explains a lot.

Sam Adams Imperial Series Double Bock - bought a 4 pack last night for $10. Thought it would be a nice thirst quencher after my sons soccer practice, but after the 1st sip I remembered why I don't drink heavy beers in the summer. MALT bomb is an understatement. Even the label on the back reads, "Sam Adams Double Bock is brewed with a half pound of malt in each bottle, almost enough for a loaf of bread . . ." Forced myself to finish it, but it almost made me sick.

Schlafly Pilsner - had a couple of these to try and warsh the malt from the back of my throat, but it never did. Tasted just fine for a yellow beer, but nothing special.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Hops were going crazy up until about a month ago, especially on the Cascade vine. But then a bunch of the cones turned brown and dried up, and now I have quite a few new smaller, newer cones that blossomed in the lower part of the vine. I'm thinking of getting out the ladder and plucking the brown cones off and it may help the smaller new buds along. Despite that, I should still be able to easily fill 2-3 gallon ziplocs on that vine.

The Magnum did much the same, but almost ALL of its cones withered crispy brown and for the most part, the vine looks like chit, and it pretty much quit growing at about 15 ft. I don't think I have a single good bud from it. But when I crumble these crispy hops, the yellow lupulin glands are all there and just as musky and waxy and fresh smelling as the green buds. I wonder if I can use them? Oz?

My best research has turned up that my hops probably have Downy Mildew disease, but who knows. Weather has been strange this year, then came the aphids, and then Japanese beetles did some damage. I never did much fertizling or watering other than some manure back in the early spring.

I'm thinking some varieties do better for our climate than others.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

i just finished kegging a dry hopped ipa. cleaning out the hop bag.. wet hops up to the forearms... mmmmm.. what a glorious aroma.

p diddy, i saw your post about the hops. i've got first yr vines. my cascades made it about 12 ft before shutting down and flowering out. nugget had a bad start of the yr. forkin dog dug up the rhizome twice, so it was behind the other two. then when it was about 2ft tall, either the wind or the kids pulled the good vine out, so it had to start over. well, it has since sent one up about 14' and is now coned out nicely. the centennials got whacked by some varmint kid during 4th of july festivities and are out for the year. (maybe for good). i've had to spray mine twice for a black looking worm. other than that, no problems with the jap beetles.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Wow, Haus, yours did great for 1st year vines. Just wait till next year, its going to be Little Shop of Horrors. Homebrewed dry-hopped IPA, eh? I love that beer. I can smell the hops from here. You got me motivated to brew up a batch if I can just find the time.

How big did your cones get? I have a few on the Cascade that got as long as my thumb, but most are about half that size. I think my biggest mistake was waiting too long to pick all the ones that turned brown, but the 2nd wave of buds is still growing and I won't make that mistake again. They should be ready to pick in a couple more weeks.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

i've got a few cones like yours, kinda of papery thin and starting to brown. i've pulled a couple off and there's not much to them. they didn't look worth keeping.
the cascades are probably 3/4" long and the nugget are around 1" - 1.25" long. they're quite a bit larger than the cascades.
like yours, the bottom third to half are going nuts again now. I had been trimming those "suckers" off when the main vine was going up so they wouldn't hold it back, but since the main vine has quit growing, i'm just going to let the bottoms do what they want.
I wasn't expecting much this year.. just being able to pull a cone off and smell it is pleasure enough..

6pk of Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin ale

Re: What's in the Fridge?

You're right, we oughta keep this thread going.

Let's see, right now:

Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale
Anchor Old Foghorn Barleywine
Anchor Holiday Ale, 2007
Shiner Commemorator Dopplebock (I keep hoping Shiner has made some good beer. I was wrong again.)
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, 2007
Michelob Dunkelweisse (tastes like bubblegum)
Steel Reserve (for a quick warm-up)
Milwaukee's Best (for fishing, lawn mowing, and friends who can't appreciate the good stuff)
Sam Adams Brown Ale
Sam Adams Cream Stout
Mendocino Spring Bock
Imperial Porter - homebrew on tap
Yellow Dog Lager - homebrew on tap
Guinness 250th Anniversary Stout (Sam Adams is better)
Right now, I'm mostly enjoying the two cases of Spring (burp) Bock I got cheap at Brown Derby.

Oh, and I've about 10 different 22-oz. bottles of rare California microbrew beers in my shop, not in the 'fridge yet.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Let's see how good my memory is:
6pk SA cream stout (haven't sampled it yet)
case (minus several) of SN anniversary ale
6pk (minus 1 or 2) SN stout
6pk (minus 1 or 2) SN torpedo
2 bottles Founders breakfast stout
6pk (minus 1 or 2) Founders dark bastard ale
6pk (minus 1 or 2) Rogue Porter
1 or 2 bottles Rogue brutal bitter
2 8-packs of a canned German beer (16 oz or better) the name of which escapes me, in reserve for a float trip.
plus countless odds and ends, poker-night leftovers mostly.

Edit: The German canned beer is "Bitburger" or some such... last night I was in the neighborhood and picked up a 4 pack of Samuel Smith's oatmeal stout, and a sixer of a new Czech pilsner what name escapes me.

Geez, I'm done now, I'm buying them faster than I'm drinking 'em

Got to try the Hoptober when I was out in Sept. Tried it right from the tap at NB. It was goood. I still think Mighty Arrow is their best. I'm finding a lot of beers with Amarillo as their flavoring hop. Very distinct. I think the Hoptober uses some amarillo. To me the Hoptober had a hint of peanuts in it near the end. Different.

I'm heading back out to Colo Thursday. Hope the weather cooperates.
Bro-in-law has been drooling about Dogfish Head's 90 & 120 min IPA. He claims they're smooooth. He said they make Great Divide's Hercules taste like paint thinner and I think the Herk is pretty damn good. $10 a bottle (12oz) for the 120 min IPA... It better be forkin good.

My favorite New Belgian has to be the 1554... winner of last year's 1st annual Forsythian New Years Eve beer fest.

I'll have to look for the Hoptober and the Mighty Arrow, but I'm finding myself climbing back down the hop vine a bit... the Hercules, Titan, Torpedo, O'dells and the like have me up out of bed and reaching for the pepto about 4 in the morning. Anymore, I'd as soon have a Blvd Single Wide or (my new favorite) the SN Anniversary Ale.

Speaking of Sierra Nevada, anybody splurge on their Estate beer? I wanna say $12 or so for a 20-some-odd-oz bottle... pricy

Hey, I'm still enjoying the Mendocino Spring Bock I found 8 six-packs of in the bargain baskets at Brown Derby. Good stuff!

I think I learned something about the incredible mark-up retail stores get on such beers. On a couple of the sixers there was still a price tag - "$9.99", marked out. I bought 'em on close-out for $3.99 each, and I'm sure Brown Derby's not selling anything for less than their cost.

So, the brewery that makes the beer, the beer distributor, and the trucking company that brought it from CA are all getting part of $3.99 out of that six-pack, and they're able to make a profit doing it. Brown Derby gets $6.00 for just putting the sixer on the shelf and selling it. Wow.

Sounds like one of those sampler packs?

For starters, you gotta drink 'em out of glass. And not a frozen glass either. For gawds' sake don't freeze your glass. A mug is good. And if your hunting buddies give you any grief, tell them to pi$$ off, 'cause you're taking your beer drinking to the next level baby. They can come with you, or they can stay behind... no matter, 'cause you're on your way to flavor country.

I picked up a six-pack of Hofbrau Munchen Dunkel (dark) the other day, and it's real good. It's a German Dark Lager, and I bought it when I read the label and found it's actually brewed in Munich according to the old Purity Law (no ingredients except malt, hops, yeast, and water). Good stuff!

I was real surprised to find Price Cutter here in Ozark carrying it. Ya just never know.

Reading up on it, the Hofbrau House in Munich is a state-owned brewery/beer hall and it's been around for 100+ years. In 1920, Adolf Hitler formed the National Socialist Party at the Hofbrauhaus. Politics aside, those Krauts sure make good beer.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Lord help me, the local Forsyth Country Mart got their liquor license, and they have turned their dollar-store section into a liver-pickling paradise.
Considering the limited catchmit of this store, I am impressed by their selection of beers. My first purchase? A quart of Lagunitas "Little Sumpin' Extra". I forget the IBU's, but at 8.5% ABV it was a wrestling match. Not nearly as smooth as the Founder's Breakfast Stout (which featured similar numerical credentials), it was more akin to the Founder's Dirty Bastard. I don't know if Lagunitas was trying for a scotch-style, but that's what I got out of it. Along with some indigestion.
Anyways, back to Country Mart. Here's the problem. After work today, I gots to pick up some bread and milk. I've done it a hundred times, but now I've got the Sirens singing to me from the Northeast corner of the store... "Ken" they'll softly purr... "try the Hop Stoopid".
This is gonna take some getting used to.

I'll have to wait 'til you're along to check the beer selection at the Country Mart, so one of us can watch the boatload of fishing tackle. I don't like to go into big stores when I'm pulling the boat - some of those other "Forsythians" might not be honest.

State Park? Boy, I dunno. There's still a few reports of white bass boiling around there. Other than that, I'd think work a big leadhead jig with a Green Pumpkin grub across the bottom real slow from up shallow clear down to 50 feet of water. The islands, humps, and points around there are big smallmouth territory. You might try a wacky-rigged Senko in the same color up around the banks and bushes, too. I wouldn't know how to find a crappie now.

I've got my deer from last Saturday mostly ground into hamburger and in the freezer, and I'm gonna use the good weather this weekend to try and get another one.

Hey, State Park is where I came in from night fishing one summer about 1 a.m. and found two college-age girls sitting on the end of the courtesy dock, topless, drinking beer. If you see those gals, tell 'em Sam said hi. I bet I remember them a whole lot better than they remember me, though.

Whole Hog Imperial Pilsner by Stevens Point Brewery(Wisconsin) - had a 4 pack over the weekend, 8.5% abv, wasn't bad, but wasn't great. Pours a deep yellow, reminds me of Budweiser Special Release brew - the one that comes in the champagne magnum and is the higher octane version of Bud. Tastes like crappy butterscotch candy.

Followed it up with a few Boulevard Pilsners and felt better.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Blessed again by the in-laws with more beer at holiday time.

Dogfish Head:
Palo Santo Brown -- awesome 12% abv beer. Hints of candy, coffee, caramel... Nice!

120 min IPA - Haven't tried. Supposed to be around 20% abv and costs $10 for a 12 oz bottle!!

Burton Baton - Haven't tried

World Wide Stout -- Haven't tried. 18% abv.. dear lord

Ska Brewing - Durango, CO -- Ten Pin Porter: Real good porter. Not as meaty as a stout. Some darkened malt, coffee flavors. Sweet finish.

Ft Collins Brewing - Rocky Mtn IPA - Great hoppy IPA.

Leinenkugel Sampler:
Red Lager
Amber Lager
Creamy Dark
Fireside Nut Brown Ale

Creamy Dark is by far the best of the bunch. I'm not a big fan of Leinie. Most of their beers are watery and lifeless. With that said, the Dark is a pretty damn good beer. I liken it to beefed up schwartzbier. A little more body than a schwartzbier. No overpowering flavors of coffee or burnt malt like porters & stouts. I can drink this one alone. Most of the others I need to drink with some food to drown out the off flavors that mimic mass produced beer (MillerCoors).
The rest are okay. The Fireside is growing on me the more I drink it.

Yeah, I bought a sixer of Fireside Nut Brown Ale awhile back, and I think it's pretty good. Not wonderful, but pretty good.

Hey, yesterday I bought a Winter Sampler 12-pack of Sam Adams seasonal beers. The only one I've tried is the Winter Lager, last night. THAT's a good one! It's a heavy dark lager with good malt and great hops.

I wish S.A. put the Winter Lager out by itself, but they don't. I'll have to soldier through the wheat beer ("grains of paradise" - yecch), fruity lambic, and whatever else is in there to get some more of it.

Bell's Double Cream Stout: What I'd call a good clean stout. The label says 5 different malts, and it darn near tastes like a "malt" with a creamy smoothness and just a hint of dark chocolate bitterness. Not alot of licorice notes, which is a nice change of pace from the other stouts & porters I've been drinking lately. Finishes extremely well for a 6+ % abv.
If you can stand paying 10 or 11 bucks a sixer (ouch), this is a really really good beer.

The hop bombs have not been agreeing with me lately, so I've been wandering aimlessly. I've tried 3 new ones in the last week or two:

Kalamazoo stout - Good (dry, more licorice than choc)
Sam Adams Noble Pils - A good American take on the Czech style... more "crisp" than the SA lager IMO.
New Belgian Sunshine Wheat - A solid session beer.

Picked up a sixer of Breckenridge Oatmeal stout the other day, haven't tried it yet... what can I expect?

I get that craving for "American Lager", too, and I drink some of it every week. It seems like the system wants a break from the heavy beers and stouts sometimes.

Michelob Original Lager works for that. They claim they're brewing their original 1890 all-malt recipe to make it, and I think it's good. Then there's Sam Adams Boston Lager of course, and Boulevard Pilsner - also good ones.

got another bomber of Great Divide's Hercules (double IPA). That has got to be the best double IPA in my book. They do an awesome job of flavoring out the high alcohol content (10%). Sweet upfront with big hops on the end.

Gavin, how'd you like the Noble Pils?

PD, you out there? Couldn't remember if you had the Albright boots... if so, I was wondering about their sizing.

I went to Crane Creek today, and decided I've had had it with the low crotch in my Prolines. Makes it too hard getting up and down the bank. Looking at a size 11 stocking foot and a size 12 Albright boot. thanks

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Still here.

Forsythian - I picked up the Albright boots for my boy. Got them a size bigger than his normal shoe size and that worked out well. Now we just need to find a time to go get 'em wet before he outgrows them. They look like they're pretty well made. Mine are some old Orvis boots that I picked up for a song when they went out of business here a few years ago.

Tried a couple new brews this weekend at the local Deweys pizza parlor:

Charleville Tornado Alley Amber (St. Genevieve, MO): good roasted malt flavor, very drinkable and tasty, long on the roasted flavor which I liked, but the head disappeared pretty quick.

Magic Hat 9 (Burlington, VT): advertised as a Pale Ale by the waitress, but was a little on the light side for that, and not much hops going on, and had an interesting apricot finish. Good chick beer.

float trip in the snow sounds perfect right now.

a guy here at work was talking about it a few weeks ago. just can't find time to make it work. wish the wood stove could cut & split it's own wood.

Bought a 12 pack sample with red ale, 1888 bock, creamy dark ale, and another (I think amber ale. The creamy dark is real good I thought and agree on the 1888. Can't say the red really jumped up an grabbed me but still a decent brew.

The contemptible scoundrels at Price Cutter were out of Sam Adams Cream Stout yesterday, so I bought a sixer of Guinness Draft instead.

I had a bottle last night and yep, the Cream Stout is better. I like the little nitrogen bubbles from the fizzer in the Guinness, though.

Man, it's 11 degrees out there and the roads are kinda icy. I don't want to drive up to the north store, so I guess I'll have to go without Cream Stout for another day. I'll get through this, somehow.

thought about making a seperate thread for this, but usually no one replies, so here ya go.

Schlafly Scotch ale

Only had one scotch ale before this one (Sam Adams) and was hoping for some smoked malt. Didn't read up prior to buying. No smoke in this one, but not disappointed.
Mahagony in color. Sweet malt, caramel, some nuttiness. No nasty aftertaste. Just good, sweet, smooth malt. Reminds me a lot of Sam Adams Irish Red and Gordon Biersch's Maibock.
This ain't one for the hop heads unless you're looking for a chg of pace.
Good stuff!

Oh yeah, Ranger IPA been sold out down here, but New Belgium's Mighty Arrow is back out. Cascades and lots of Amarillo hops. Not your normal grapefruit, pine needle hop bomb. More of a mellow, grassy style of pale ale. Still hoppy, just not the puckering wow kind...

Drink up boys!

Found the Ranger IPA that's been talked about... it is clear, decent head, good lacing, but it's a bit too "floral" for my taste. Give me the Single-Wide any day over this one.
Here's one to look up, if you got the stones for it... Big Sky "Bobo's Robust Porter"- holy mackeral is this beer chewy and earthy and just plain huge. It's "only" 6.2% abv, but it must have a week's worth of calories per 12 oz glass. If you like serious black beers, you'll like this one.
carry on ya bunch of lushes

Lukas had plenty of the Ranger, but I'm with Forsythian, there are too many other BETTER IPA's to choose from like Single Wide, Torpedo, Schlafly APA, O'Fallon 5 day, etc. Finished my last Ranger last night and I'm convinced that the folks at New Belgium are dry-hopping with Halls Cough Drops.

Its okay I guess, but not one to seek out. A little too thin in body, and the weird cough-drop hops flavor is all I taste.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

The store had a new foo-foo beer yesterday - Michelob Winter's Bourbon Cask Ale, so I brought a sixer home.

The blurb on the label said "An auburn colored brew with a smooth robust taste, full of rich aromas, hints of vanilla and flavorful hops". "Winter Ale aged on Bourbon Oak Casks and Whole Madagascar Vanilla Beans. 6.0% alcohol".

Well, it's the prettiest clear brown/red color I ever saw in a beer. I tried for years to get that beautiful color in a homebrewed beer by using all kinds of specialty grains, but I never quite achieved it.

Ya don't suppose AB would add a little red food color to a brew, do you? Nah.

That's it - the color's the best thing about it. I didn't notice any bourbon flavor, but there's a strong aftertaste of vanilla!
Yecch - if you want that, just pour some cream soda in your beer.

Dam' major breweries pretending to brew craft beers. I washed the taste out of my mouth with a Sam Adams Cream Stout, and went to bed.

Yeah, I've had that AB Winter Bourbon Cask stuff and it was way overdone on the vanilla bean flavor and I couldn't taste any of the bourbon oak nonsense.

I got a chance finally to try the Ranger and like the others, it's okay. Nothing spectacular. The finish is weird. It just doesn't quit. I'm used to good ipa's to drop off pretty quick.
Smells alot like the Mighty Arrow, hints of grassy hops, but mostly citrus. I thought it tasted pretty similar to Single Wide, but Single Wide finishes a lot better.

Another trip to the candy store, and another batch of new brews to try.
Sierra Nevada has a new batch of Glissade spring bock, and it's pretty decent. I'm not usually big on this style (ever since an unfortunate bout with Paulaner's overload), but this one is subtle and balanced.
The other one for tonight is Left Coast Acme California IPA... this one is pretty mellow for an IPA, kind of blurring the line between an IPA and an APA. It's a very easy drink, and I appreciate the lack of crappie bed, but it's a little light on the hops.

Still to come: Shafley Irish Stout, Founder's Centennial IPA, and Scrimshaw Pilsner.

mmmmmmmmm beer

Keg has been dry for over a month, and lenten sobriety started to ketch up to ole Paul. So I took her in for an exchange on Friday. Choices were Bud, Bud Select, Bud Light, Amberbock, Hoegaarden, 2 or 3 varieties of Schlafly, Fat Tire, some other crap, and a lonely 1/6th barrel of Ranger. Grouchy as I was, tonto whispered in my ear to go for the lone Ranger and hi-ho silver we were away.

Hopin it was better on draft, and it is, but its still a weird IPA. Almost gold in color, light bodied, and minty hoppy. This beer would taste better in the heat of summer. Goes well with a NY strip on the grill though.

Boys, I gotta say the Sierra Nevada Glissade spring bock really grew on me. Standing in front of the fridge, with lots to choose from, and I drained that sixer in no time. Seek it out, you won't be disappointed.
Sam Adams Noble Pils is similar, but honestly it doesn't have the complexity that the Glissade has.

Also tried Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball... bleh... it's a weird beer. High ABV (mebbe 8.5%), but "thin" and sweet. Nasty IMO.

The Shafley Irish stout is a nice beer. To me it seems hoppier than most stouts, but it's a real easy drink. I'll buy it again, but I feel it in the morning more than most.

IPA's? Lately I've been through Ranger, Torpedo, Centennial, Left Coast, Big Sky, and etc... and I gotta say Boulevard Single Wide is still my go-to. Which is nice.

Anybody have the Big Sky Bobo's Porter yet? Beuller?

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Brewing beer for money is a hard, hard way to make a living. 4 out of 5 brewpubs go broke real quick. The rest are doing good if they can operate at a 5% net profit. When they're combined with a restaurant, there's more money in the food than in the beer. It's not the ingredients, though they've got 'way expensive too - but overhead just kills ya.

Microbrewery costs are much higher - it's real expensive to bottle, package, and distribute beer, and the taxes are ridiculous.

When it's a big company that's willing to lose money to demonstrate their brewing equipment, like Mueller, then they can stay in business. It's kind of like the California gold rush - very few miners made any money but the guys who sold shovels did.

When a rare micro gets real big, like Boston Brewing Co. (Sam Adams) - then economics of scale kick in and they're making tons of money. My former partner is working for a company with restaurant/brewpubs in 19 states. The economic downturn has hit them hard, but they're going to survive.

Very few brewers grow large enough to be profitable. Trying to make money making beer is a tough way to go, and that's the truth.

so when were you involved with these 2 micros and 3 brew pubs?

I am aware of your connections with Bj's, and the outfit that was in a garage in springtown, but where were the others and at what time?

i'm guessing the micros were bottling only since the can revolution has just begun. I really could care less of brew pubs. I like brewing beer, not cooking food.

did these micros fail? how many bbls were they producing at a time?

i agree, overhead CAN kill you, but even if you have an unlimited supply of cash, if you're brewing piss... you're still not going to make a profit.
Likewise, if you are smart, start small and brew great beer, I think you can survive.

U.S. Brewery Count Passes 1700
The count is at 1,701 operating breweries in the U.S. There are 9 percent more breweries in the U.S. than a year ago. As I blow the dust off the historical records, it appears that there were 1,751 breweries in 1900 and 1,498 in 1910. So we have more breweries than we have since around 1905. My resource for these data points is The Register of United States Breweries 1876-1976 (compilers Friedrich and Bull). There certainly are a lot more diverse brewing styles being offered today, particularly by craft brewers, and I'm betting quality is far greater now than then.

At the end of March during the general session of the Craft Brewers Conference, I will present the number of breweries that operated for some or all of 2010, which will be a higher number than the current count, as it will include breweries that closed in 2010. Another interesting number will be the breweries opening count.

Overall beer market down for third year in a row

While the craft beer industry has been, well, hopping along quite well thank you, the overall beer market has been, excuse the pun again; in the tank.

Last year marked the third consecutive year of diminishing growth rates in the beer industry, dropping 2.1 percent. According to the Beverage Information Group's recently released 2010 Beer Handbook, the beer industry's downturn can be directly attributed to the decline in the light beer segment. Light beer, which accounts for a 52.8 percent share of the U.S. beer market, posted its first negative year since its beginning 30 years ago.

Other segments of the beer industry differed in their 2009 results. Imports declined 6.9 percent, while the craft beer segment increased 7 percent.

What - I gotta give you references? Are you collecting names of breweries that no longer exist? I'm not applying for a job, you know.

If you don't want to believe me, then don't. Fact remains, brewing beer is a tough way to make a living and the business failure rate is very high.

I never had anything to do with BJ's. That's where John Oliver, our former general manager, works.

Everything I did with brewing was between 1984 and November, 1999 when we sold our homebrew supply business. So OK, maybe it's got easier to make a buck making beer since then. Friends who are still in the business tell me it's even tougher now, though.

OK, the country has 1700 breweries now, just like a hundred years ago. At the start of the 20th century, though, all those little breweries had a big market share in their own local regions and they were all selling a fair amount of beer. Now, 4 or 5 giant corporations have 90% of the national beer market, and the other 1695 brewers are competing for the other 10%. Quite a difference.

I've never owned any part of a commercial brewing operation, though people have certainly tried to sell me some. My involvement was in helping friends who bit on the hooks I wouldn't bite - finding equipment and ingredients, and helping out by putting on rubber boots and shoveling piles of malted barley, running filtration equipment, stuff like that. In the course of that I got pretty familiar with the financial end of brewing - watching those businesses go broke and trying to keep it from happening.

Hey, maybe it's my "help" that made 'em all go t!ts up. It sounds like you've got plans in the wonderful world of commercial brewing. If you do it, better stay away from me - I'm a curse.

hey you can get defensive if you want. i'm just asking questions and trying to learn all i can.

when someone takes as negative a stance as you do on something, i like hearing the details of why.

sorry if you think i'm calling you out. maybe i am, but as rigid as you were on your stance, i wanted to know why. maybe the owners were great business people and they brewed sh*t for beer. maybe the owners brewed great beer, but didn't know how to run a business. maybe the owners bought $300k worth of equipment and set it up in a town of 1000 people...????

you've got great opinions and you've earned them. i guess in the end if you want to get defensive, you're welcome to it...

i'll just know now & in the future to not ask the tough questions.

Hey, I'm not defensive - I'm a mean old man. If I offend you, just tell me to go f___ myself. That usually works.

While you were typing, I added this paragraph at the bottom to my post above. It explains a lot of why the brewpub and microbrewery businesses are so difficult. Not impossible, just very difficult.

And you're right. I was really involved in the first micro/brewpub boom in CA in the late 80's - and the outfits with the snazziest names, the prettiest logos, and the worst beer went broke first. A few outfits actually survived and are still operating today.

"OK, the country has 1700 breweries now, just like a hundred years ago. Re: What's in the Fridge?

I think the way to get into it would be to buy a micro-brew pub on its 2nd or 3rd failure. The first owner is paying the premium on all the startup costs and has all the headwinds. The 2nd owner buys the operation at a reduced price, and by the 3rd failure, you probably got yourself a bargain. Bottling and packaging your stuff for mass retail is a whole nother can of worms. Cost to ante up is for multi-multi-millionaires and even that doesn't guarantee success. Got have a good product, make it consistently well, and deal with fickle customer tastes and try to differentiate among a sea of other competitors.

AND, you've got to convince a Coors, Bud, or Miller distributor to distribute your beer - and that ain't easy.

They're going to want you to show a certain (very large) volume of sales, and how can you develop volume without getting your beer distributed first? Then - the distributor and the stores have "planograms" of the beer displays, with every inch taken and careful consideration given to what brand goes next to what. Does your brew "compete" with an existing one? Uh-oh, not interested.

If you can pass those hurdles, the retailers and the distributors are gonna demand more profit than what the brewer makes - it's real easy to brew for nothing or at a loss.

I haven't even got into the alcohol tax structure yet - in which the ABC man often has keys to padlocks that lock the brewmaster out of his own fermenters. You want to see how your brew is doing and test it? Wait until Thursday when the tax guy is supposed to come by.

I know of one deal where a brewpub changed ownership, and the brewmaster (who continued working for the new owner) had 15 barrels of real good pale ale in holding tanks. The guv'ment made him pour it out, 'cause the new owner couldn't sell beer that had been made (and taxed) under the old owner's license. THEN the city slapped the new owner with a big fine for putting the brew down the sewer system. The delights are endless.

Just sayin'.

There are ways around this even in a 3 tier state like MO. I don't feel like typing a book this morning, but it involves wine and like Ozark said, it ain't easy, but it's easier than convincing one of the big 3 to haul yer product for you

You beer snobs would have proud of me. I spent three days in Dallas last week for a trade show / conference. In keeping with Lent, I drank nothing but Shiner Bock the whole time (learned it used to be just a lenten beer). It was free the first night and went down waaaaay too smooth. Second night I had to figure it was good enough last night, should be just as good tonight. It was. It got a little lumpy on me the third night but I suspect it had a lot more to do with the quantities from the first two nights...

Yes it does. I'm not sure what you mean by production brewery.

Is it gonna be a brewpub with beer on premises only, or are they (hopefully) gonna can/bottle something? When it comes to local bottled beers, I can't get excited about anything Mueller is putting out.

The thing that kinda offends me about modern American "India Pale Ales" (including Single Wide) is the absence of oak in 'em. That's the only thing that makes an IPA different from just a hellacious overhopped light or amber ale.

The original brews from around 1800 got the oak flavor from being shipped to British troops in India in oak barrels - a long voyage in a sailing ship. They didn't taste like oak when they left England, but they did when they got there.

I've made IPA's, including one that won a national trophy. The way to do it right is to throw some sanitized white oak chips in the secondary fermenter and give it a long aging time before bottling. That adds several months to the process, and the breweries ain't gonna do it. There's a couple of English ones that still use oak chips - I think Samuel Smith is one.

The other way to do it is to add a little "oak flavor extract" to the brew before bottling. Homebrew shops carry the extract - it's a clear liquid, it comes in little plastic bottles, and a little goes a long ways. I'm not familiar with Titan IPA, but if it's got an oak flavor that's probably what they're doing.

I've wondered why the other American "IPA" brewers are leaving the oak out. It's kind of a strange flavor in beer, and maybe they figure customers wouldn't like it (I do). Whatever - the beers they're making aren't really IPA's without it.

I've known some beer geeks in homebrew clubs to carry a bottle of oak flavor extract in their pocket and add a couple of drops to a glass of beer before they drink it. That's kinda anal, but I've been thinking about getting some and putting a couple of drops in Single Wide - just to remember what an IPA really tastes like.

That'd be better than paying $10 a sixer for someone to add those two drops per glass for me.

Well, yeah. In Forsyth, the store probably sold 37,000 cases of Bud Light while that bottle-conditioned six-pack of Bully Porter sat on the shelf for two years!

696', huh? That's impossible to fish - there's places where I could take my boat 1/4 mile out in the woods at that water level. The fish are gonna be out where the deer usually roam in the heavy brush, eating bugs and worms.

I'm thinking, though, that my best-ever trips for walleyes were out of K Dock the year the lake was 22 feet high in June. I was trolling those plugs just outside the land-bush line on Mincy Flat. I had to put the boat in at the dip where the high and low roads to the ramp split, which worked just fine. I got limits of good keepers several trips in a row.

So if they let the water go down 20 feet by then, and if it should be around 675' in June .......

kegged up 5 gal of Honey Blonde Ale last week that is leaving the keg pretty quick via the wife.

most blonde ales i have tried, i never liked the way they tasted, so i created my own monster.

when i first made this last year, i put a pound of raw honey in the kettle at the end of the boil. the pure, simple sugar of honey made the abv jump and created a dry beer. i was looking for honey-type, sweet flavor. i quit using raw honey after that first batch and have gone with honey malt. i started out using a half pound, but am now up to a full pound. It sure smells good in the mash and after a week or so in the keg, the sweetness really turns on.

good lawn mower beer @ 5.7% abv.

I've got to go to Nixa this afternoon, and I'll pick up a case of Genesee Cream Ale at Brown Derby to stock the 'fridge.

Genesee is a minor upstate New York beer that's been around since the 1930's - it's got adjuncts (corn) in it for sure, and it's kinda malty, kinda smooth, decent hops, kinda low carbonation. I'm not saying it's a real wonderful high-quality brew, ya understand - it'd probably get about a C+ in a beer competition.

But for a hot-weather "lawnmower" beer, I like it a lot better than any of the big-brewer MillerBud offerings. I think it's fermented with ale yeast alright, and the "cream" refers to the smooth finish - it goes down real easy. Besides, it's got a purty label. Cold and wet, it suits me real well in the summertime!

i won't list all the beers i had, but the highlights were a black ipa @ tommyknocker,
the myrcenary double ipa @ o'dells,
the 1900 amber ale @ ft collins brewing and of course a favorite, the gordon (g'knight) double red ale @ oskar blues.

brought home a 12 pk sampler from deschutes brewing in oregon.. their summer ale is pretty good & the best of the bunch.

if any of you head out west, i highly recommend stopping by the tasty weasel @ oskar blues brewery. 55 gal barrels of peanuts and the beers are awesome... gordon, ten fidy & gubna.. all imperial style beers..
(if i could post pics on here, i would)

Red snapper? Never heard of it (other than the punchline about the girl who went fishing with 3 guys). What's the style?

Joining the masses at Table Rock this weekend, largely against my will. I have about a hundred Budweisers on deck for courage, along with 2 sixers of Big Sky IPA to pre-emptively numb the pallet each day.

I once met two female employees who I was supervising at a seafood restaurant for supper. One of them looked at the menu and asked "what's a Red Snapper?"

At Price Cutter, I picked up a sixer of Big Sky Brewing Company's "Slow Elk Oatmeal Stout". It's pretty good - I'd rate it about a "B".

The best thing about it is the label. The label shows a lazy-looking, fat, white-face Hereford cow, sporting a set of elk antlers tied on with a rope! I guess that's a "slow elk" in Missoula, Mt.

I like Yuengling. Genesee Cream Ale is another old upstate NY beer I like a lot - Brown Derby has it sometimes.

I've got a half-formed theory that there's some correlation between politics and beer quality. It seems like the best beer is brewed by the wing-nuts and sissies out on the Left Coast, then Colorado, then Boston and elsewhere in New England. In "blue states", I suppose.

Then from more conservative areas like Texas, we get, uh, Shiner.

I've tried to like Shiner, lots of times. They've got some good-sounding beer styles and every year or so I'll buy a sixer of one of theirs, hoping for the best. Nope, I always get disappointed.

What it is, I think, is that when we started our homebrew shop in the early 80's a lot of our customers were making "Prohibition-style" homebrew - one can of hopped malt extract, five cups of sugar, a pack of Red Star yeast, and let 'er rip!

Hate to say, the Shiner beers all remind me of those - they hit the sugar bowl 'way too hard!

Re: What's in the Fridge?

The manager of our local Price Cutter apparently decided to expand their beer selection, so I've been trying some new stuff. There's been two real finds so far - the kind that make you go "Oh lord, that's GOOD beer!".

First, you hop-loving Pale Ale guys would really like "Lagunitas Little Sumpin'" Sumpin' Ale. Lagunitas Brewing Company, Petaluma, Ca. According to the label, 64.20 IBU, O.G. 1.076, Alc. 7.5% by volume. Ingredients: "12 Fluid Oz's. of Hops, Malt, Hops, Hops, Yeast, Hops, Water, and Hops. Life is Uncertain, Don't Sip." Good, Good, GOOD!

Then there's "Dark Truth Stout" from Boulevard Brewing Co. in K.C., Mo. This is one of their premium "Boulevard Smokestack Series" beers that come kinda pricey in a 4-pack. Per the label: "Roasted English Malts provide a deep, rich texture, Belgian yeast bestows plum-like fruitiness, and German hops add spicy aromas as Dark Truth Stout mellows to a smooth, dry, smoky finish". 9.7 Alcohol by volume. Wow, this is a fine (bedtime) beer!

I'll leave it to griffin to expound on that "plum-like fruitiness" thing - he's from the big city.

NOT worth 7 bucks a six. That's my beer review.

You guys are the exception to this of course, but I'd bet 8 average Joes out of 10 couldn't I.D. a Belgian yeast from a cheap ass grocery store yeast, and the same with hops, malt and the other stuff. The beer either tastes good or it doesn't.

Peroni is the latter, coz it don't taste. There's just nothing there.

Italians are good at fast cars and hot brunette broads. Okay and some wine and cannolli's. Not beer.

Not sure about that particular flavor of Peroni, but imported light beers like Peroni almost always suck compared to similar style microbrews made on this side of the pond. That Peroni probably sat in a warehouse for a few months before it even made it to a store shelf, and prior to that, on an ocean container for a good month.

Entirely possible Paul. But this wasn't even skunky. It didn't have any "flavor" at all. I mean, like NONE. I wonder if it was an "end of the run" and it actually is rinsewater??? gakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

I like trying diffrent beers .. and yes you're right, alotta the "Euro" stuff is notably old and skunky, off, etc.

I wish Schlafly was available up here. Luckily, I'm headed to Como and beer heaven, comparatively speaking. Up here, if it ain't Bud-Miller-Coors, they've never heard of it. Pigs!

I'm no linguist, but any beer with "Nastro" in the name has to be nasty. Like P.D., I don't think great beer is something Italy is known for.

After trying a commercial beer that's new to me, and after forming an opinion of it, I like to look up how it rated on Beer Advocate. The guys doing the ratings there are beer geeks - the kind we got to know and love while we were in the homebrew supply business. Bow ties, overbites, coke-bottle eyeglasses, and they'll biotch-slap ya for confusing Willamette with a Noble hop. Well, maybe I exaggerate a little (but just a little).

They know their brews, though - and since there are so many readers doing these ratings, the average is usually a good indication of a beer's quality. So far my taste buds are holding up just fine, as the readers rating beers for Beer Advocate nearly always agree with what I've already decided. They agree with your assessment of the Italian Nasty beer, too!

The Beer Advocate rating for the "Little Sumpin' Ale" I like so well is here:
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/220/49789

The Dark Truth Stout I also like is here:
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/423/56469

And your "Nastro" is here, rated "mediocre". Yep.

Those reviewers are pretty uhhhhh acerbic is the term that comes to mind LMFAO!!!!!!!!! But Interesting stuff. I'm learning a lot about bier!!!!!

One ??? is "lacing" found the vertical sides of the beer glass or what? I could have hit the FAQs for that but I'm too damn lazy at 5a.m. LMFAO

PS, there's a Peroni empty here on the table where I'm typing this... the bottle doesn't even have a whiff of beer to it... really disappointing stuff.

Served in a pilsner glass

A - Pale, straw yellow. It has an inch of white head.

S - It's your typical skunky, green bottle smell.

T - It tastes skunked and ass like. Not good

M - Luckily it is watery. If there were some corn floating in it I would be worried that they are bottling Italian chit.

O - It is a great beer! Not really, it is pretty bad.

Speaking of Guinness, had a couple of bottles in the back of the fridge for weeks and weeks. I was out of "good" black beer, so I fished one out and popped it open.
I was surprised to find it partially frozen. Not too surprising I guess, considering it's a fairly low abv beer. Anyways, I decanted the liquid phase (about 2/3 of it) and it weren't bad! The inadvertant process added some 'nads to what is usually a thin gruel.

Most of them don't do much for me, but the Sierra Nevada Celebration is pretty OK. The only IPA of the group.

Sam Adams Chocolate Bock was pretty good if you're into that style.

The Goose Island Mild Winter was good.

Schlafly Winter didn't do much for me.

Sam Adams Winter Ale didn't impress me. Tasted like a really boring brown ale.

Reminds me of a family story. 'Way back when, I had an aunt and uncle who got stranded in Flagstaff by a snowstorm while driving between CA and MO. They were stuck in a motel for several days.

With nothing to do, my uncle remembered that he had two full cases of beer in the trunk of the car - a California brand that he'd found and liked, and couldn't get in Missouri. He brought them in, and they found the beer was frozen except right in the middle of each can. They used a spoon or something to punch through the ice, and got to pouring the unfrozen alcohol out into glasses and drinking it. There really wasn't much liquid volume, so between them they drank it all.

These were church people who'd been married forever and didn't drink much, and boy, they got drunk. Too bad they were already in their 50's, or I'd have probably got another cousin out of that deal!

I'll start looking for Big Sky's seasonal Porter since you say it's good.

Original Al - I bet I'd like the Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, but if it only comes in a sample pack with their Old Fezziwig and Winter Ale, I probably won't buy it. I've had both of those before, and I wasn't impressed.

Two big beers, and sort of opposite styles to each other, that I've been enjoying:

Big Sky Powder Hound Winter Ale - a heavy, 7.2%, amber ale, hopped to the max with a REAL good hop selection. GOOD!

Tommyknocker Butt Head Bock lager - a Doppelbock out of Colorado, malty, hoppy, cold-lagered, they did a real good job on it!

Carry on.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Yup. Price Cutter here started carrying Tommyknocker beers - from an Idaho Springs, Colorado microbrewery. There seem to be a whole bunch of flavors.

I enjoyed the Bock six-pack, then I bought a sampler pack of six different styles. Their IPA was real, real good - then there was a foo-foo Summer Ale made with fruit juice (blackberry, I think) that I actually enjoyed a lot (I take it all back, Haus). Last night it was a bottle of Vienna style Amber Lager that was RIGHT on.

Hmmmm. Tommyknocker be brewing good beer. At least everything of theirs I've tried so far has been good, and I like that their selection includes heavy lagers that most micros won't brew because those take up too much fermenter time.

I'll have to explore the Tommyknocker brews further - a tough job, but I try to be useful even in retirement.

i've been to tommyknocker's brewery twice. this past august i tried their pumpkin ale and their black ipa. pumpkin was okay.. tasted like they put too much brown sugar in it to me.
the black ipa was pretty dang good. i think they used some rye malt in it for some different flavorings.

the wife had some sort of summer ale called tundraberry or something like that. it was infused with berry juice or something. not bad at all.

neat lil brewery on the main strip of town. idaho springs is pretty much on the shoulder of i-70, down in a canyon. i'd hate to see the town after a big rain.. it would wash it away.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Haus, thanks for the info and for posting the pictures. That's interesting.

I didn't know a thing about Tommyknockers, but I'm impressed by three things: (1) Every beer I've tried of theirs has been of good quality, and sometimes REAL good quality. (2) I like the selection of beers they're offering. They're not playing the usual brewery economic game of trying to sell LESS product content for the same or greater amount of money (everybody peddling quickly brewed thin wheat ales, woo-hoo). (3) To get their beers distributed in Missouri and who-knows where else is a BIG breakthrough in the micro business. That's Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada stuff, and if they can do that they're putting out some real quantity while maintaining quality, and they're not a small business anymore.

And you know it's a rare microbrewery that'll tie up fermenters making lagers, especially high-gravity ones. That makes points with me!

Good beers, both of 'em - but there's a couple of opposites.

At times I've blended beers with good results. If I had a sixer of both of those at the same time I think I'd try it.

Mixing the overhopped Torpedo in a glass with the over-malted Salvator might result in something real good, I think. Whatever comes of that wouldn't be a delicate beer, but I bet it'd be interesting.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Never occurred to me to try, but great idea. Thats why I got those 2 -- to have the opposite ends of the spectrum -- a big hoppy ale and a strong malty lager, get sick of one, go to the other, but it never dawned on me to do like the kids do at a soda fountain, mix 'em all up. Along with the remnants of the half barrel of Budweiser I still have on tap, I figured I had all the in-laws covered for turkey day. They ended up just drinking wine and I'm glad they did.

So now I'm trying your idea, Oz, and I'm about 4 sips in to this 2-part epoxy, no explosions yet, and it tastes damn good. Don't worry, no Bud was added. I thought I mixed them perfectly equal 1-1, but the Salvator is actually in control, the big malt is more noticeable than the Torp's big hops. I would drink this beer all the time. I shall name it Salva-Torp. Or maybe Paul-Tedo.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Hung out in the garage last night, frying fish on the Coleman stove and listening to Mizzou trounce the whiny flatlanders to our West. Several brews were enjoyed, including a couple of new ones:

Tommyknocker Hopstrike Black IPA- A good "big" beer at 6.5% ABV. They tout the hops on the label, and they come through, but I think what makes this beer good are the roasted notes you expect from a black beer. Sometimes you don't get that. My only complaint is the higher abv masks some of the flavor.

Samuel Smiths India Ale- I imagine this to be more of a traditional "true" IPA, and it was incredibly good! The citrus was there but in the background. Same with the hops, they were there but they were not in your face. I wish this beer was more affordable.

Boulevard Dark Truth Stout- Once poured, your pint glass looks like a black hole. There's anticipation, awe, and a little fear that comes with the first pull. No light escapes as the roasties blast your taste buds and the 9.7% abv warms your innards. This beer ownded me, rendered me feeble. I was its b1tch. Still am.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Muggs - Is there still a little plastic goat hanging on the neck of each bottle of Celebrator?

I had a friend in college who had about 20 of those goats hung from his rear view mirror. I told him that was kinda dumb, but he said "whoever heard of a cop who knows enough about good beer to know what those are?".

He had a point, there.

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Yup. They still got the goats. They would make a nice white trash Christmas tree ornament.

Here's a few shots of the view I drink to and what's on tap here at the trailer park...

Late hopped red ale. Going for a blood red ale for Halloween.. Looks pretty close

Maple Porter

Oktoberfest

We make & drink a lil beer around here...

Re: What's in the Fridge?

Spent a few hrs at Avery Brewing in Boulder last night. Been here a bunch before. They continue to amaze with their beer. If you want some of the best, big alcohol beer in the country, Avery is the place.

Some of the highlights:

Uncle Jacob's Stout -- Stout that tasted like straight up chocolate and alcohol. Reminded me of those little chocolate candies with the liquor in the middle. Said it was aged 6 months in a Makers Mark barrel. 17% ABV

Bad Apple -- Sour belgian pale ale the spent 12 months in oak barrels with Granny Smith apples added the last 6 months 6% abv

Eremita IV -- light blonde ale sour spiked with blueberry & juniper that spent 3 yrs in neutral barrels. This one was mild and had a distinct white oak flavor. 9% abv

Chinook Wet-Hopped Pale Ale -- They picked Chinook hops in Niwot Colorado, flew them to the brewery and had a batch in the kettle waiting to go.. 5.7% abv

And to cap it off, my bro-in-law threw down $34 for a 12oz bottle of stout called Margarete. Who the fork throws down $34 for a 12oz bottle?? We do!!
Prolly the most complex and amazing beer I've ever tasted.

Imperial stout brewed with Turbinado sugar & sour cherries. Aged in Buffalo Trace barrels. This was an experiemental batch in 2009 or 2010. The only bottled 89 cases in Jan 2011 and now have 7 bottles left.
Smooth, sweet, thick stout. Flavors of chocolate, cherries, toffee, nuts and raisins. We spent an hour drinking this big one. 15.43% abv.
Not sure if they have it online, but they might have a list of these "vintage" beers. It's called the Captain's List and all of these beers must be drank on premise (??) Some of the beers on the list are nearly 10 yrs old. We let our bartender try a shot cause he said he'd never tried it. He literally freaked out.

We also bought two bottles of their limited release Imperial pumpkin ale called Rumpkin. Pumpkin ale aged in Rum barrels.. 18.9% abv!!! (Haven't drank these yet)

It's been a good start to the trip...

Re: What's in the Fridge?

2013 inventory:

couple months ago i brewed a winter beer. biggest one i've ever brewed. i took my 6.5% abv smoked porter recipe and bumped it up to over 10%. all grains too, no sugar or extract to elevate it. Maxed out my mash/lauter tun as it required 25# of grains to hit that mark.
It's been kegged and aging. It ended up at 10.2% and it's good. I was expecting some alcohol bite at first, but the blend of grains was just right.

I've got 5 gal of it that I've been sipping on. I like to blend in some of my pumpkin ale with it. Makes a real nice evening beer.

The rest:

half a case of Banquet

5 gal of 4.3% abv apple ale - homebrew
5 gal of 6% pumpkin ale - homebrew
5 gal of 7.6% late hopped red ale. Centennial & Amarillo - homebrew

1 bottle of Left Hand's 2012 Fade to Black (Rocky Mtn Black Ale)
1 bottle of Schlafly's 2012 Christmas Ale
750ml of O'Dell's 2011 Bourbon Barrel Stout
