I got what's left of a 12er of Natty Light for yard work and all around drikin.

A case of Bud minus 2 or 3.

A large bottle of Chimay Blue that I'm keeping for a special occasion. This is some good chit right here. Perhaps my favorite beer, but its so damn expensive I can't afford it all the time.

I don't keep the hard stuff around the house anymore due to decrease in home productivity.

Glad you asked. When I get the right price I buy in bulk.

And $11.95 a bottle--$78.50 with taxes a case is the right price.

Hey Ozark, Sam Adams Octoberfest is $5.99 a six pack at Southtowne Spirits in Hollister. All their SA varieties are on sale (no Imperial). They got your Paulaner's as well... I'm thinking $8.99 for those, but might be 7.99.

They had a growler of Imperial pilsner there... some brand I never heard of... it was an opaque white container and it was $13.99 for maybe 24 ounces! Anyways, just in case you were wondering what to get me for Christmas

If Sierra Nevada beers are some of your favorites, you're a hophead all right.

I like SN brews, they're well-made - but my tastes run more to the malty side, and that ain't what SN does.

I wonder how the hop shortage is going to affect SN. Best I can figure, they use about half the hops in America.

Turtle - I bought 2 of those Sierra Nevada Hop Harvests, and drank them both in one sitting(equivalent to 4 beers). Had a wicked hangover the next day which I can only attribute to the strong hop content. I'm officially off of hoppy beers for a while. That one was just too much.

Equivalent to four 7% ABV beers...or 6 Budweisers!

I'm not knocking Sierra Nevada-type beers here - they're well made and some folks have a taste for high doses of hops. Heck, I've got a friend whose email address is "ibu90" - and 90 International Bittering Units is about enough to pit glass.

But in commercial brewing, hops are cheap and malt is expensive. Taken down to a homebrewing level, 50 cents worth of hops will make a helluva difference in 5 gallons of beer, but it takes 5 bucks worth of malt to make much of a difference.

That's why 95% of specialty, microbrewery, and brewpub beers have extra hops but not extra malt. They keep the brews thin, then hop 'em up for flavor - 'cause that's real cheap to do. Michelob's new Marzen is kind of an extreme example of that kind of cost-cutting, but they're all doing it.

What's hard to find is commercial beer with higher gravity (malt content) and a reasonable price. There aren't many of those.

I don't know if I've ever had a SN beer... I'm gonna have to try one of those hoppies myself.

I just broke into my case of Little Yeoman's APA last night... watched the boys in Cabool bottle it for me on Friday and have been letting it sit at room temp ever since (recommended for carbonation?). Hoo boy it's good stuff, and I'm not really an ale-guy. It's gonna go quick.

I've seen around town where they have the case of Michelob samplers... I'll probably pick one up this weekend for grins. Also, I'm not a huge Boulevard guy, but I picked up a sixer of "Bob's 47" a couple of weeks ago and it was great! Ofcourse, I haven't seen it since...

It's been an interesting journey, this craft brew thang. Prior to this forum, I was pretty much Bud and Bud light. I liked Bud for it's "full flavor." Two years later, and a chitload of brews, homebrews, and extra pounds under the belt, I've turned into a hophead and an ale freak. Forsythian, you mentioned that you aren't much of an "ale-guy," but to be honest with you, I can hardly find a lager that interests me. The Czech ones are probably the best, but even if you can find one that isn't skunked from its journey over here, it still tastes real grassy to me. Ales are just a lot more complex and wide-ranged in my opinion. And Bud...I can hardly drink one down now. Not saying that any beer is bad, in fact, just the opposite. It's just that some brews rock my taste buds a helluva lot more than others while they make someone else

As far as the yeoman APA...let that chit sit 3 weeks at room temp in a dark spot and it will be in it's prime!

Got a few Bud Lights for the wife, a few PBR's for working in the yard, some Schlafly Dry Hopped APA, and some L. Yeoman's thanks to Forsytian.

Havent cracked the L. Yeo yet, but its always a fav. Think the Schlafly Dry Hopped APA is probably my current favorite beer because cant seem to pass the local beer cooler w/o picking up a 6er . Got some Schlafly No. 15 mixed with my 6er last night. Some wierd flavor going on there, wouldnt recommend it. Best I've had recently was a bottle of Oaked Arrogant Bastage from Stone Brewery in San Diego. Great stuff, just wish we could buy Stone products locally.

Well that's it, everyone has different tastes. Myself, I like full-bodied German-style lagers best but there's a whole lotta other beer styles I like too.

Back in the day, I won a whole bunch of homebrewing competitions. I had a homebrew shop at my disposal, wins were good for advertising, and I ended up with a wall full of ribbons, mugs, and trophies - some from national competitions including the GABF.

One of my secrets (which I sure couldn't have told at the time) is that I lagered a lot of "ales". I won with a whole bunch of Pale Ales, Stouts, Porters, India Pale Ales, Russian Imperial Stouts, etc. - and though the ingredients belonged to those beer categories, I often cold-lagered them with liquid lager yeast cultures instead of ale yeast.

I got a kick out of it at the time - even professional brewers who were judging on the national scale never figured that out. I'd get scoresheet comments like "extremely crisp, clean, and clear". Well yeah - if you cold-lager a Pale Ale for three months, it'll do that.

So far as my recipes submitted with the beer entries, well, I might'a lied some on those. Now you know my big secret - my own little steroid scandal. Ya think I'll have to give those trophies back?
