That Blvd Double-Wide (it's twister-proof!) comes in a single big bottle, maybe about 750 mls. And, I'm gonna say I paid 7 or 8 bucks for it, but man is it a hop-bomb!
I like the Goose Island IPA too, but if you all can find O-dell's IPA I say BUY BUY BUY! I know it's on the Westside, and it's in the big Brown Derby in Springfield, but I don't know if you can get it in ol' St. Lou.

Apart from my hop stock, I've slowed down on the darks here of late... I've got a couple of straggler bottles here and there of 1554, Bully Porter, Dry Stout and Coffee Stout.

In their place I've been on a bit of a red ale kick.
Goose Island makes a decent red ale, but I gotta say I like Boulevard's Irish Red Ale a bit better. Seems to finish cleaner.

I will be in Europe next week, taking in a few matches on the pitch. Would you like me to bring you back a case of Beck's?

Tried a couple of new ones last night...
The first was a Schafley Scotch-style ale. I'm not a big scotch-drinker... most of my scotch experiences have been late at night when it's time for a pissing contest, so I'm not sure why I bought this other than curiosity. This was my first try with this beer style, and I don't much like it. Tasted kind of fizzy, and I had the impression I was drinking a "flavored" beer rather than a genuine style.
Gave me heartburn too.
The othern was Samuel Smith's IPA. It was pretty good... it has that thicker creamier mouth feel to it, which I guess is a British-ale thing. Personally, I prefer the American PA characteristic of being a bit more crisp. Good hop character was there, but not as hoppy as O'dells and etc. It might be that the "thicker" aspect to it masks some of the hops. For me, there were hints of bock or Octoberfest character to it... I would say it was definitely more complex than the APA's and IPA's I've been drinking lately. Whether that's good or bad, I don't know... but I don't think I'll be switching from my Schafley's any time soon.

cheers

Man this St. Rogue dry-hopped Amber Ale is one gem of a beer. Upfront hop aroma, then Rich malt followed by an even stronger counterpunch of hops, but not at all bitter and a smooth finish. Good head retention and lacing all the way to the bottom of the pint. Its Schlafly APA only 50% more of everything. Do I want another? yes, I will.

Yeah, thats one of my favorites. I think Midas is running a special on aftermarket livers, but they nail you for the environmental disposal fee on your old one.

New Belgian 1554
O'dells Cutthroat Porter
O'dells IPA
Schlafley dry hop
Bob's 47 (they're calling it an Octoberfest now?)

Has anybody tried the Odells double pilsner? $13 a sixer! I took a pass, but I'm haunted by my decision...

I've had it. Its good stuff. Very smooth and hazy golden. Strong too, I think the ABV was up around 9^% or more. I thought needed a little more hops to balance it out, but I haven't had any other double pilsners to compare it to.

Honestly, the Odells DP was a disappointment to me Forsythian. It had that butterscotch diacetyl taste that I just can't stand and like PD says it lacked in the hop arena. Spend the dough on some SA Hallertau.

Thanks, I knew I could count on you soakers for some valuable feedback.

Look at us... dropping $10 for a sixer and not even thinking twice. Hell, nowadays I drink Blvd PA when I'm slummin' at the creek. I'm gonna get my ass kicked at gigging camp this winter if I'm not careful!

TH- the 471 is not bad, but the finish is metallic tasting to me. I've found that in a few other beers and i'd like to know if it's just the hops they're using or combo. let me know what you think

At 9.2% ABV, a bomber will get the motor runnin just fine..

Gotta make a run in the next day or two... down to remnents of Schafley APA and Odells cutthroat porter.
I was wondering if anybody's done a side-by-side of Octoberfests... I just finished a sixer of Paulaner's, and was wondering how Sam Adams & Schafley Octoberfests stack up.
Also- anybody seen the Schafley coffee stout yet?

i did a side by side of schlafly & sam adams oktoberfests last month. sam wins, but not by much. sam is ultra sweet, to the point that i got burnt out after a couple cases...

schlafly is not as sweet, finish is not as good, but it's not a big difference in my taste bud opinion.

if schlafly was as cheap as sammy, i would have bought 4 cases of it instead.

oh yeah, i think there is a big difference in the taste profiles between german oktos and these two american oktos, so if you just drank some paulaner, i would think you'd notice the american one's to be a lot sweeter and not as dry as the kraut's.

I've tried a couple octoberfest beers in the past week or two..Sam Adams, Schlafly, and Dundee's..They were all good, malty and sweet but nothing stood out..Same with AB's American Ale..decent but unmemorable.

Picked up a bottle of the Schlafly Biere de Garde at the local wine shop last weekend, and I didnt have the discipline to let it age. It was very good as is. The Coffee Stout isnt in St. Louis area stores yet, but their website says it will be available on October 24th. Cheers.

Wasn't in the fridge, but my cooler, hope it still counts . . . 4-pack of Beamish Irish Stout, 16 oz nitro cans at Shop N Slave. Very good, especially in front of a fire on a gravel bar on the Current River at sunset. Might like it even better than Murphy's.

Picked up some Ayinger Octoberfest for the genuine Bavarian experience.
My next door neighbor bought a sixer of SA black lager, I wound up with 5 of 'em!
I won't bore you with the rest of the odds and ends, suffice to say I won't go thirsty this weekend. BUT, I got a couple of questions for you drunkards:
*My local spirit shop (the proprietor of which is enjoying my weekly visits no doubt) is all abuzz about SA chocolate stout coming soon... is this any good?
*For weeks I've been bringing home those Mountain Dews in aluminum bottles- a couple at a time. The kids get their sugar & caffeine high, and I've been keeping the bottles. The scheme is to re-bottle good beer for float trips. Has anybody tried recapping these things? Will a hand-held capper do?
Thanks in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

good idea on the aluminum bottles. I have a mess of aluminum bud bottles and a ton of caps. I'll try capping one tonight and see how it goes.

well, no go on the bud bottles. i don't know what the mtn dew bottles look like, but the bud bottles have a straight neck. if you look at the neck on the non twist off bottles, you'll see it has a collar on it.. that's what gives the capper something to pull against.

hope you can get them to work. it's a damn good idea. 16oz of malted barley pleasure on the crick.
