OK fellers, time is gettin' close to season. I haven't hunted mushrooms very successfully over the years. When I was a kid I used to go with some folks from Wheeling and they knew of several good spots. Seems like that's the trick, eh? What sort of location do yall think is best? I am talking like on sloped grades, vegetation, etc.
We used to zero in on where we found dead American elm....but since the Dutch Elm disease wiped them out I don't really know what other dead trees are or are not significant to finding morels.
Any salient advice?

Come on they is some master 'shroom hunters on hera like duko Duckband, DMR & Eddie just to name a few. I may jus' go out and buy me a book and read up...buncha non-helpful bastages ya are...

I have found them under clusters of cedars believe it or not. However, I wouldn't recommend punching the coordinates into your gps afterwards.
I will say this. The biggest secret to finding mushrooms is not worrying about the secrets.
Now that my friend is deep stuff!

Invest in a good mushroom call. Not one of the cheapies they sell at Wal-Mart, but a good, hand-carved call made by a real 'shroom hunter. Get into the woods early, preferably before dawn. Wear camoflage. Sit beneath a big, dead elm tree (we still have elms in north Missouri) and call them to you. On a good day, you can fill a grocery sack without having to move to a new tree.
That's a lot easier than stumbling around in the woods all day like a member of the morel majority.

A good shroom dog is worth its weight in gold. Takes more time to train than a field champion retriver, but its worth it
the other piece of equipment any good shroomer should never be without is a straight shafted weed eater, the kind you can put a saw blade on. Be prepared to change blades periodicaly throughout the season due to wear and tear.
Finally, some sort of high gallonage trash sacks or feed sacks from your local feed store. A snow shovel will work well but tends to piss your buddies off, with a good dog and a weed eater, they think you're just showin off with the shovel

I owned a good 'shroom dog, once, but we were forced to put it to sleep. It had started pointing quail.

Lot's of walking...Fertile soil....edges of timber early...heavy timber later...then lots of walking....Take a kid with ya...them young eyes can pick em out way better...Did I mention lots of walking!

I can't believe that nobody mentioned hiring a guide.
You think that duck hunters and fishermen are secretive about their spots ? Try talking a hand into taking you to one of his shroom spots. 
I know, I know. You weren't asking for spots, That's a good thing, cuz you'd have better luck asking Jaeger which Democratic candidate he'd vote for.

OK, then. I think I am all set! Been busy as hell keeping up with all this advice but I think I am ready. Can't thank you fellas enough. I'll be sure to let ya know how I do. Never realized the importance of having the proper gear for this kind of sport.
After a thorough search on-line at Bass Pro, I failed to find most of the gear yall suggested. The stuff must be limited to them Filson catalogues (Scout1, is that so?) So, bein' late preparing for the season I had to improvise.
I bought me a dvd on mushrooms, tied up the dog in front of the tv and have been leaving her there to watch it all day this week while I am at work. I think she's ready...sure seems different somehow when I call her.
Gave up looking for a shroom call-maker, but I did find a suitable starter call at Walmart... well at least this guy that sold me this crow call said it would be so I bought two.
Never was one to hire guides. Sandy and I are heading out on our own as soon as it stops snowing and the sun comes out!!!

I tried to train my rott to smell out some shrooms.I would throw one out for her to retrieve and she would pick it up bring it half way back then eat it.   There went my supper  Not working for me!

Nobody mentioned decoys.
I have found some nice hand carved morel dekes around MOMO land, 'specially near Richmond and in Ozark souvenir shops.
What caliber do you fellers use for a clean kill without too much meat destruction?

Now that it's out in the open, these are the ones I use.
Set them about 15 - 20 yards in front of you and get your back up against a tree that is at least shoulder width apart. Just make sure it's not a thorny locust.

Decoys. 
I guess I need to buy some decoys. Haven't found mushroom yet, not around Boonville or north of there. The ground is still so cold that not even May apples are popping up. Maybe the next couple of days will change that.
If ticks were morels, I'd have a grocery sack full.

started findin grey's today Oak Grove area
had a heck of a time wif em. weed eater didnt want to start,
dog was willin to work, but danged if he didn't get hung up in the decoy lines. If the guide hadn't been there prolly would have lost him

I went on a 10 mile bike ride yesterday stopping at a number of pre selected spots along the way to look for shrooms. Only found 4, all at the same location, but they were very small. I scoured the spot hard to make sure I didn't miss any befor I left. We got some rain last night and it got a little steamy today so I went back to the same spot this afternoon and easily found 20. Unfortunately they were all pretty small and I even left a few of the smallest (marked of course) but I think I'll wait two days before I go back so if any more come up they should be a little bigger.
