won't stay running
      #157785 - 08/03/08 12:07 PM

Ok, who's got an idea of what might be wrong. My mother in law, being the great lady that she is, decided to give me 2 4 wheelers that they have had since about '98. One is a yamaha timberwolf and the other is a yamaha grizzly 600. So I take them both in to get serviced. Carbs cleaned out, new spark plugs, batteries, new tires on one of them. This was about 6 months ago. Came home and put sea foam in the gas tank because I knew I wouldn't be riding them much until we got moved, etc.

The timber wolf runs fine but the grizzly is having some issues. It will start when I pull the choke and it will run for about 30 seconds or so only with the choke pulled out. It eventually just dies like it is running out of gas. It will only start once. If you let it sit for a couple of hours or overnight it will start again the same way and proceed to die again the same way. It is almost like fuel is getting in the line or something and when it is used up it just dies. Could the carbs be gummed up again? I have tried it with the fuel set to on, reserve and off thinking they may have put the little lever back on wrong or something like that but it doesn't matter. Just does the same thing. Anybody ever hear of something like this? Interested to hear thoughts.

The fact that it runs for 30 seconds and then won't start again for a few hours makes me think that it is running off the fuel in the carb float bowl.
You'll need to check the tank valve, fuel line, and fuel inlet on the carb for fuel flow, the float bowl and main jet for debris, and the fuel for water. If you want to tackle it yourself and have questions, PM me.

Dave, will do. I will however be waiting until it frickin cools off a little bit!!! My garage is one hot sum buck these days. I'm sure it has some gunk in it. Just can't believe I had it in not too long ago to get it all cleaned out and now it won't start again. Why can't anything ever just work the way it's supposed to...lol. Later.

I'm with DMac, sounds like the carbs need to be cleaned again... paying particular attention to the jets. If you have been running Seafoam in it lately, it could be that it has cleaned a piece of crap loose and it's got stuck in your jets. Although, it might be as simple as some junk in your line. If you have an inline filter, check that out first. It maybe that you just have a bunch of sediment sucked up in there.

I had a carb isshoo last winter.....

On two or three occasions, the conditions were ideal to ride to a neighborhood bar about a mile from the house. "Ideal conditions" being a snowstorm in the morning when I got off work.... A Crown Vic can't catch a 4WD quad on snow , but ya better have snowfall to cover your tracks.

I was returning from one of these rides and the forkin' thing suddenly wouldn't hit over 15 mph. Lucky for me I didn't encounter any po-lice.

It turned out to be debris sucked up into the main jet.

(trying to help dmac keep some traffic down here)

i'm pretty sure i know what the problem is, but i'll ask anyway...

i've got the father-in-laws 2 stoke wheeler at my house. sob had been sitting for a couple years, but i've got it running again.

it will start and run pretty well with the choke pulled out, but will die deader than a hammer when you push it in. i'm guessing it's a dirty air filter. what do you all think??

I started to type that earlier and stopped halfway through.

I have a Grizzly600 and it has been a problem with mine.....It would run a little better than just when choke was on...but anytime you gave it throttle it would die.

Problem ended up being too much oil in the crankcase...causing it to "blow-by" and saturate the air filter with oil...not letting air get through.

I had to leave the oil level at the lower part of the site glass window to keep it from doing it.

Maybe not the same...but I see what you are sayin.

Haus, does it die when you give it throttle? Does it die if you push the choke in?

no, it runs fine. you can be blowing down the road, push the choke in and it will die like you turned the fuel off.

i'm ashamed to say, i can't remember what the hell brand and model it is. i want to say polaris. it doesn't have gears, just give er gas and go. And when it goes, by god it goes. runs like a raped tomcat.

dabs, this being my father-in-law's and his track record of upkeep on equipment.... I bet the damn thing doesn't have a drop of oil in the crankcase...

i'll check it anyway.. thanks for the tip.

Haus, check for:

Clean air filter
Idle mixture adjustment screw
Vacuum leaks between the carb and cylinder
If you don't find anything there, and it still won't idle w/o using the choke, pull the carb off and clean the pizz outta it. Check the pilot jet, that's the one that the long needle seats into. If that's clogged, it won't idle right.

Edit: You was posting while I wuz writin'..... The fact that it absolutely won't run w/o the choke, even at speed, really makes me think you got a major vacuum leak. Get it outdoors with a can of starting fluid and a garden hose handy, start it and spray on the intake between the carb and the cylinder. If it picks up rpm, you know it's sucking it in somewhere it shouldn't.

My first guess is gummed up jets or plugged orifice(s) in the throat.

I wouldn't think it would run at all if there was pizz in the carbeurator?

Might be the pitcock in the bowl....I had to have 1 replaced and they told me that when you leave it sitting for a while it will rust and allow the gas to go where it isnt supposed to......Hows that for a garage explanation?

The thing would backfire, miss, die, and do all kinds of things when you were riding it.

this sucker had been sittin in the tall grass for over a year. I took a bottle of wd-40, some earl, some fuel and an airtank. it had a friggin rat nest under the seat next to the air filter, so i'm sure something got ate on under there.

it was hot and i wasn't in the mood. I was just happy i got it started. i hopped on it and ran the piss out of it down the road and loaded it on the trailer for further inspecting when the weather cools down.

for all i know, the carb is full of akerns

Fork it.....if it sat that long outdoors, get rid of the fuel, replace the filter and disassemble and clean the carb.

Who the hell lets an ATV sit outside for a year, anyway?

i plan on it, and you mentioned some i hadn't thought of.

the neat thing about all of this is i'll get the bastage running and looking good again, and he'll want it back.

did the same thing earlier this year with his riding mower.

oh well. one thing i do enjoy riding that he can't take back and that's his daughter...

Don't know if this applies here, but make sure that the gas cap can vent. Our group had Honda three wheelers, I still have two of them. The venting gizmo malfunctions, the tank can't get air in to let gas out.
