T.J. Oshie......
      #176263 - 02/11/09 09:07 AM

may just be the most undisciplined, deranged, pin ball wheeling lunatic to ever wear the note........it's about time we got one of 'em.

If Murray doesn't kill him by letting him attack so relentlessly.....the kid will help lead the team to some great things.

He's the most fun I've had watching hockey in 10 years.

I love that kid. He is a perfect combination of a checking line grinder and a 1st line scorer. Rare combination...

Mostly he's crazy.

You're right, he's a rare find......but he's only rare because most of his kind have crashed into the boards and broke their necks at a young age.

And that is why he keeps ending up on the DL. I was not so enthused about this kid coming out of college but he has changed my mind this year. He is Brendan Shanahan with a loose screw. If Murray is smart enough to keep him on a line with McDonald, LOOK OUT!!

I will keep watching and rooting for them but I don't see them making the playoffs this year. Too many things out of their control for it to happen. And quite frankly, they aren't exactly taking care of business with the things that are in their control. The loss Tuesday night was inexcusable and Mason needs to show he can carry the load CONSISTENTLY!!

Here's what I want to see for the rest of the year: Keep Kariya on the shelf unless he is 100% healthy. If they rush him back, he could be damaged for good. Let him heal and be a part of the winning season next year. Unless they are within a point of two of making the playoffs, don't take chances with him. Second, trade Tkachuk for a first round draft pick or a solid young player that can grow with this team. If they want to resign Tkachuk in the off-season, so be it. It doesn't excite me but it doesn't piss me off either. I used to hate him but he has changed my opinion a bit, now that he is in shape and contributes. I just don't see him taking this team to The Cup. Third, keep playing and developing these young guys. I am very impressed with the core of young players and how they are developing.

And finally, I would give Anaheim any player and possibly any two players they wanted for Pronger. He is on the down side of his career and still one of the top 3 defensemen in the league. Considering that moving the puck out of the defensive end is still one of the weak spots for the Blues, he would be the answer. Can you imagine a defense with Proger, Erik Johnson, Polak, etc...

Well maybe but.........imo we don't need Pronger now....how much would he cost?...nice memories and that'll do.
Secondly, I say let Tkachuk go but do their best to fill the spot with another and younger marquee type guy.
And you're right about Mason....if he can produce we have a shot if not forgetaboutit.
I guess Bishop needs more work....I thought maybe we'd see him up here AND PLAYING some but...........not.

Oshie maybe good, but the Blues have a terrible defense and their goalkeeping is more than suspect. They are giving another one away tonight.

Oshie gets an assist, defense plays better, goalie was outstanding and Blues win 1-0. Soon as I biatch about them they turn it around. Griped about the Tigers after the first half against KU and they one. I'm beginning to see a pattern.

I will strongly disagree with you on that. They have a very, very young and inexperienced defense that is missing two of the best three defenders on the team. Add in the McKee injury and it is worse. Even with this, the defense has managed to play decent.

Look at the average "games played" for other teams and look at the Blues. I think they only have 2 guys with over 350 games of experience. That is almost unheard of in the NHL.

If the Blues would have had a goalie through the first half of the season we would have been fine. The old habit of signing someone else's throwaways has not paid off. I believe we hold the all time record for number of goalies to start a game for one team.

Yeah I agree on that.....when I was thinkin bout our chances to make the playoffs it is the one hole that ain't gonna go away. I don't think Mason is terrible but he ain't gonna carry us very far either.
I like our defense warts and all.....they play pretty chippy. bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

Mason has the God-given talent to take any team to The Cup. what remains to be seen is if he has what it takes, between the ears. That was the knock on him in Nashville. They saw his talents and couldn't deal with the disconnect in his game. Hopefully, Wamsley can help him get it together.

Consider that the Blues got him for a 4th round pick. It wasn't like they gave up top-tier talent for him.

Don't look for Bishop this year or even next. The soonest you'd see him as a regular would be the season after next. They say he has a lot of talent but some pretty big holes in his game. He'll get the instruction and playing time he needs in Peoria. If it all pans out, he could be something in a few years. Personally, I wouldn't bet a plug nickel on it. The dude is 6'-7" tall. I know there have been a few successful tall goalies in the NHL over the years (our own Mike Liut) but they are the exception and not the rule. Add to that fact, the reality that today's game requires more and more dexterity and flexibility and it just gets harder and harder for the tall guys. I'll put my money on this new kid, Jake Allen. Of course we won't see him for 3 years but he's the real deal. And I don't know what the deal is with Schwarz. He just doesn't seem to be able to show ANY consistency.

In the end, I also have to wonder if the netminder position will haunt them for the next few years...

Well the next few years I could take if it weren't for all the past years of mediocrity. As if Grant Furh's name alone could do it even though he was clearly well past prime with injuries every other period. ( ADIOS TO 5 YEARS THERE)

I admit we are not alone in this quest...but after 40 years of dry holes it is time to bring a damn Cup to town.

Great win last night against the Rangers. After Strachan got his clocked cleaned by New York's Colton Orr, Cam Janssen came back and pummeled Aaron Voros. And it wasn't even close (that battle was classic Gordie Howe-style beating). After that it was like watching a different game. The Note turned it up a notch!!

Too bad this hole is seven points deep. They can still make the playoffs but they'll really need some help. In the unlikely event they make it, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them advance a round. I doubt they would go any further than that but it wouldn't be for lack of effort.

Go Blue!!!

All I can go by is what I have seen in the lst three games I have watched. Way too many giveaways in the defensive end, failure to clear the zone, and a general lack of toughness. Jackman is not a top line defender. I too have followed the Blures since 1967. We had season tickets for years. Mebbe I'll see the defense in a different light when they get everyone back and healthy.

The only problem I see in the defense, and with their game in general, is that they don't move the puck out of their end with any authority. A team that forechecks like the Blues do eats them up. BUT.....if you look at goals against, we are in the top 6-8 in the Conference as it changes from week to week. Defense isn't really a huge problem.....but getting the transition game going is. We'd put up alot more points if that end of the game gets some work.

Hence, we need Pronger or a Proger type. No doubt that Johnson will be that guy but it will take another 2-5 years before he is the seasoned defenseman that can change a game. He will be an important cog in the machine next year but it would be foolish to think he will be the answer, short term.

I think they were hoping Brewer would be that guy but he is proving not to be the answer. He's a solid #2 or #3 line defenseman but not the guy we need... Did Bobby Orr have kids or grandkids?

Again, considering the average age, experience level, the injuries and difficulty of the schedule, I'm not at all unhappy with this defense...

What's the deal with wagner? I think he always plays hard with some good speed but they bounce him back to Peoria like a yo yo.

Still looking back on those two tough/bad losses last week....we could use those points right about now.

Last night's game is why they won't make the playoffs...

A key Conference game, with one of the teams they're chasing and they lay an egg. The third period was as good as you'll see the play. Unfortunately for the Blues, they play 3 periods in a game and you have to show up for all 3.

I just saw last 5 of the 2nd and then all of the third......of the 4 goals were any on Mason?

I agree it's not looking good....every damn time they get a head of steam they let up and lose the close one....or two.

There ain't no more room for this.

THat was a tired hockey team.....you have to look at the coaching when that happens. If your going to forecheck like the Blues do then you need to have more rest.....especially this time of year.

I saw tired legs last night.....20 seconds into a shift and some of those guys were gassed.

2 he had no chance and 2 could be argued either way. He was not the difference in the game. As griffin stated they were flat. I don't know about tired (look at 3rd period) but certainly flat for periods 1 and 2.

By the way, did anyone else see the Ovechkin goal from last night? WOW!! A pass to himself, off the boards, behind the back, with a spin-o-rama and scores while being dragged down, in front of the net. See if you can find the highlight on the web. I saw it on ESPN.com and clicked on NHL Home. The clip I saw was Barry Melrose and some other dudes discussing it and showing the highlight. That was Gretzky-like...

I didn't see alot of pop from them even in the 3rd period.

I think they looked better because Columbus was just playing to protect a decent lead.

Tonight will be interesting. The Predators were also smacked around pretty good last night.

If they lose tonight, look for trades... They really needed to win both last night and tonight. With a win tonight, it would still be possible to make the playoffs but very difficult. With a loss tonight, I would say the odds are looooooong, at best...

Maybe Tkachuk for a hot young goalie prospect!!

I have never seen any team in my life as tentative as they are in the last 2 or 3 minutes of a close game. Hell, it's 5 on 5 and they back up like they are shorthanded, defending the 4 corners. Nobody can get the puck out of the zone and nobody even tries to attack.

Yeah, a nice win.....but geez.....I need more beer when I watch the last few minutes.

Somebody needs to remind them that they need points and also need to keep teams like Nashville from getting points. A 2-1 win in regulation would have been far more valuable than th 2-1 win in OT. Of course they didn't want to lose and get no points but they can no longer afford to think like that. It has to be balls-to-the-wall from here on out.

They owned that 3rd period until the last 4-5 minutes.

Also give credit to their Goalie, Rinne. That could have been a 3-1 or 4-1 win for the Blues, if it weren't for him. And he had zero chance on the game winner by Tkachuk. In fact, he made 3 or 4 saves on that power play, just prior to that...

No doubt, under the current system it is MUCH harder to climb out of a hole. Used to be a hockey game was worth 2 points....win or tie. Lots of games are worth 3 now, and when the two teams playing are teams you are trying to catch.....having 3 points in the mix makes it that much harder to catch up.

If the Blues don't make it......I'll remember the losses to Edmonton and Nashville back to back when the Blues had the games in hand......and gave them back.

Do the math......they'd be one point out right now and looking like the team to beat.

Chris Mason could not have slept well last night...

To play 60+ minutes of solid goaltending, then let that puck dribble off of you and into the net...

Murray needs to stomp on the accelerator and have these boys taking a few chances. This conservative play "not-to-lose" is NOT going to get them to the playoffs...

If I were Mason I would have slept fine.....if you hold the opposition to ZERO goals for a 60 minute game and then lose in overtime....the loss is SQUARELY on your teammates who COULD NOT SCORE.

I'll tell you this, I have watched the last 10 games.....Mason is solid except for one game....and he falls apart in shootouts. Other then that, the Blues have a SCORING rpoblem, not a goaltending issue.

BLUES WIN!!!

There's another game that Mason kept them in....as I saID.....right now, our issues have NOTHING to do with goaltending.

Have you EVER seen a team as slow to get the puck out of their end as this one is?? Goddamn, it's hard to watch. Jackman is the only one with a prayer....and he has to rush it out because he sure as hell ain't making the long pass with his stone hands.

After 52-54 games...9 teams within 8 points of each other.....the Note is at the bottom of the pile but they keep showing flashes of greatness......dayum we need some playoff hockey back in this town!

I think missing Kariya is hurting them more than anticipated. They need his leadership on and off the ice, his speed and his scoring. These young kids are the future and I think we have some future all-stars but they need a guy like Kariya to show them how it's done. Sometimes we forget how skilled and fast that dude is. Considering the trouble we're having putting the biscuit in the basket lately, he would likely be the difference.

Another solid performance by Mason, a great shorthanded goal by McClement and a fluke by Perron was all it took. I was particularly happy to see how they played the last 5-10 minutes. They took it to the Coyotes and kept the pressure on...

The next two Blues all-stars will be Roman Polak on defense and T.J. Oshie on offense...

They may have caught some breaks off the post tonight but that was nonetheless a helluva game by Mason and company. Even when not sharp they stayed in the game and shocked the Stars with their third period play....right to the end....keep it up boys!

I do think they are starting to believe in themselves. I am still doubtful because it seems like everytime they get a run going, and get this close, that they shiite all over themselves in a game they need, and should, win!

How big is Tuesday night?

BIG. If we take 'em on and win it against the #2 Wings we can claim the hottest team mantle over past 15 games. But...if we lose it ...the REAL question is do we go in a spin as before or pick it back up with more wins to follow?

WTH...I'd like cherry please....

This game is soooo huge.

You have a pissed-off Red Wing team that doesn't lose too often and damn sure doesn't want to lose 2 in a row. They will be on their "A" game. Count on it.

The Note have been playing very solid hockey and giving 100% effort most of the time. But let's also be realistic. They are clearly out-gunned against the Red Wings. They will have to play a very, very physical and tight-checking game, in order to win. If they get into an end-to-end, shootout, they will lose 5 or6 to 2 (if they can even get 2). There is no way they can keep pace with Datsyuk, Hossa, Zetterberg and the like.

If you want to see telling stats, go look at the +/- of the Red Wings top 10 players. Now go look at the top 10 for the Blues. The Red Wings have 9 players that are +10 or better (Datsyuk is +28 !!!!!) and the Blues have 2. More importantly, The Blues have 20 players that are "minus" and the Red Wings have 6.

The Blues can win this game and they need to get at least a point out of it. But it will be a tough, to be sure...

Go Blue!!

Man, speaking of +/- ratings. Sports Illustrated just did a pretty decent article on Bobby Orr. In his best season that sucker was PLUS 124!!!! Think about that for a minute.....it's unreal.

Gretzky was a scoring machine and his best year was +100.

I don't think we'll ever see anything like Orr again.

Imagine what we would have seen for a career if his knees hadn't betrayed him. I only got to see him 2 times at the old barn. Both times he was just so dominant on the ice that he looked like a man amongst boys. What I remember most vividly is how absolutely strong and smooth he looked while skating with the puck. It looked like nobody could take it away and very few were interested in taking the body with him. They knew the price would be stiff...

I'd rank them Gretzky, Howe and Orr as the best three, and in that order...

I am not a huge fan of relying too heavily on the +/- ratings to determine the value of a player. But it is one good indicator in making evaluations. The huge + numbers are always impressive but some - numbers aren't always a true indicator. For example, the checking line guys are always playing against the best scorers of the other team. As such, a -5 at the end of the season may be damned impressive.

When 20+ guys are "minus" that is never a good thing. The point is that a few of those are not bad, but just a few... 20 is bad.

I would agree.....until you get to +124....then you are obviously looking at something truly extraordinary....you can't even compare it it to a + or -5....that's not even in the same conversation.

I don't know how I would rate those three......but I was in awe of Orr as a kid....and never felt that way about Gretzky, who I always considered a puzzzy with a large cast of characters to protect him. I'd have Orr over Howe though, for the years he played, but Howe moves ahead because of Orr's shortened career.

Still, not bad picks for 3 of the greatest ever.

Had Orr played a full career or even 75% of what Howe played, he would have likely moved to #2 on my list. But he didn't and we can only assume he would have been equally dominant for those additional years. But he wasn't because his knees kept him from ever having the chance. Let's not forget how dominant Howe was and how he played ALL aspects of the game. He was a great scorer, assist man, role player (checker) and one of the toughest fighters ever. They don't call it a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" for nothin'.

Gretzky was just so dominant with scoring and offense that he never really needed to play defense. He used the adage that the best defense is a good offense. But don't forget, he was used to kill penalties extensively. Also keep in mind that he played in the era where "enforcers" were the norm. Not that we would have fought much anyway but his coaches didn't want him in the box for any 5 min stretch...

On one hand I agree, Kit.....on the other hand, knowing they are close to being a RAELLY good team, but don't really have a chance to win it all this year.....part of me wishes they would finsih dead last and get another 1st round pick......and dump Walt to maybe pick up someone who wants to show up EVERY game, or another low draft pick.

This ain't the year......I know that some playoff hockey will be good experience for them....but after 42 years, I'm patient waiting for the Cup to make an appearance here.

If Tkachuk is gonna want more than two years....and they should know that he prolly will or will not....they should get what they can for him before the deadline...he is playing well enough for a contender to give a lot....and I don't know how much more he's got to give for top dollar but let somebody else find out..

They claim Walt is the one holding these young kids accountable, together, and motivated. He may not be as productive consistantly, but these kids need an old hand to keep it together. IMO. Then again, I am still reeling from the Wal-Mart fire sale that sent us to the bottom.

I would not want to be JD or Checketts right now. These are some brutal decisions that have to be made. I would understand if they make a trade and try to get in the playoffs. From what I'm told, just one round of the playoffs changes their financial picture substantially. I'm told it is to the tune of $1+ mil per game... So the decisions are tough when you just stick to hockey. Throw in the finacial considerations and it get worse.

Trade for Pronger and consider moving Walt. He'll likely make it back here next year anyway. The other problem with moving Walt is that it has to be a team of his choice. He has a no trade clause and I doubt he's going to Atlanta again...

You got it right, LS. The only reason this game was hyped like it was is because of the trade deadline.....there's still 40 pts. up for grabs.

Like I said before.....whatever they do with Tkachuck is OK with me.....but if they trade Perron, or another kid who looks to be the future of this team....I'll be pissed as hell.

The future of the Blues is as bright as it's ever been....no point in squandering that for some kind of playoff run this year. They CAN'T win the Cup this season.

I would not give up the farm for Pronger but I would give up Perron, if you could get Pronger to sign an extension. If you look at this team for next year, it has only two glaring weaknesses. The first is goal scoring, putting the biscuit in the basket. I think that is going to be solved with the maturity of the younger players and the return of Kariya. Pronger would certainly add to that area as well. He creates a lot of offense with his exceptional ability to move the puck.

The second area is just that, moving the puck in transition. With the absence of Johnson and Brewer, you really see how much we need a puck moving defenseman. Even when those two come back next year, we will be lacking. Brewer is a 2nd or 3rd line defenseman, at best. Johnson will be a Norris Trophy winner in 5 years but needs to develop and learn from a pro like Pronger. How much did it help Pronger to play with MacInnis?

I have no beef with Perron and think he has the potential to be a first line player in the NHL. But he has not proven anything yet and may or may not ever get to his full potential. Pronger is known commodity ans still one of the best 2 or 3 defensmen in the league.

My only question is why would The Ducks move him, if they weren't robbing someone blind? They need some cap space but seemed to take care of a portion of that yesterday. They can also wait until the off-season and have a few more bidders for his services.

Pronger is off the market. Davidson claims Walt is staying and it appears that they are going to stand pat. That is unless something great comes along. I believe that Boston wanted him, but the price was too high. My gut feeling is that he will go to Pittsburgh if anywhere.

Twitter away, Bubba.

I think it'll take 90 to get in the playoffs....maybe a few less if they all keep beating up on each other....but 90 sounds about right.

Using that number....it's a tall order for the Blues. The game tonight is MUCH more important then the red Wings game was.

Well if we need 90 to get in we are skrewed......24 pts in 16 games.....each regulation loss will help hammer that average beyond reach.....I'm hopin 85-86 will do it. We need some chokers to drop off....

LS - 8th place has been more then 90 for the last 3 years.....but I don't remember there being the log jam there is now....could take less since they will all be playing each other alot, but I doubt 85 will get it done.

Well gawk away Bubba...just stfu while you're doin it.....bwaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I caught the third period....a nice relaxing time it was.

BTW did ya'll see JD's interview a few days ago regarding their trading deadline strategy? No dancing around...He said the team deserved to stay together with their play this year....that they wouldn't make a move for the sake of a move....not about to give away too much for too little....and that besides all that there was no one out there with real character that was a fit for the team. He demands character he said. Did say the time will come when some tough moves will have to be made.
If you look at the years past this was a franchise constantly tryin to get there playin musical chairs....former Blues everywhere on good teams....Cup teams....but this group has stayed the course and they know what they are doin and how they want to do it. We will be better next year for not pullin a knee jerk now.

Mark my words......Perron will be an absolute force in the NHL.....more promise then Oshie in my book.

I know his name came up in trade rumors.....and that's insane. The kid is TWENTY and may have the best hands on the team.

I agree....not to lessen Oshie who seems to know where to be and then jam it home no matter what's in front of him....but Perron is definitely up a notch on skill play......those were beauties last night...we are def goin the right way....after goin thru all this they need to be very careful on how to piece in new veterans.

That's coming from a dude who's favorites have only had names like Orr, Robinson, Chelios, Lindstrom, Plager, Arbor, Harvey, Pronger, and the likes......the kid has some damn hands!!!!!!

I've still got a scrapbook at home with newspaper clippings of him in his last year of hockey, with the Blues. He was #2 loooong before Mac was.

Man, I was ate up with hockey as a kid....fell asleep every game night listening to Kelly and Kyle.

Had to have been one of their best efforts on the year....true didn't score on the 5-3 and they had a few too many penalties...I think that's what they were....but they went wire to wire for all 60 minutes in high gear and good passing-handling...forechecked, went to the puck... went to the net....great D ...they had it goin pretty forkin good.

OK that's done....NEXT! (gulp)

I looked this up...in last 20 games... of the six teams in the hunt for playoffs ( Stars-Oilers who are # 7 and 8 and then the next four down incl the Blues) here how they have done over that span:

Ducks have lost 11
Predators have lost 8 incl 0-3 in last 3 games
Minn lost 12
Stars lost 11
Oilers lost 12
and the Note lost 8 (them 2 Feb back to back losses in last sec's still killin me)

I do believe we are trending up where a few of these teams are goin south. No jinxin here...just the facts ma'am.

Go Blues!

I didn't get to see the game but saw the highlights, uh, lowlights. I wouldn't get too panicked. The Red Wings are the Cup defenders and the odds on favorites to win it again this year. In short, they're just a better team and have had very good luck with overall team health. We're a developing team and have had horrible luck with injuries.

Today's game is, however, pretty important. They need the 2 points and The Wild are one of the teams we're battling for that playoff spot. They've been struggling a bit lately and our boys should have an attitude after yesterday...

All of the other nashing of teeth notwithstanding.....the game tonight against Edmonton really IS the most important game so far. Win tonight, and the momentum may carry them through......lose and I don't see it happening.

They have to win 9 of the last 13 to get to 90 points. Nobody has made the 8th spot without at least 90 since the shootouts atarted.....a TRUE 4 pointer tonight.

O-2-1 so far against this team.....we HAVE to have this game.

Dear Keith Tkachuk,

If all you are going to do is stand there all night....stay the fork home!!!!!!

Pitiful performance by a guy who is supposed to be a team leader.

I'll take the point......but now you've got to win 9 of 12 instead of 9 of 13.....the odds are stretching.

Yeah but we are 2 points out with two teams tied for 8th and two more to jump....crowded alright but two of those 4 teams have to play very strong to close to keep us out.....we are trending better than all of them we just need to keep it up and bounce back when we fall.....also I think we have a game in hand on some of those other teams.
Maybe it's a year for 88 to get in. Maybe I'm crazy.

The fat lady is about to sing. Too many in front of them and the veterans have laid down. Blues have not scored a goal at even strength for over 2 games.

I see them only being able to lose 2 more games the rest of the way to have a shot at controlling their own destiny.

I saw the first two periods but went to bed almost knowing for certain they would lose....they had two good enough periods but couldn't get it in the net....not sure about Murrays line mixes last night either.
I think they should have won both of these games but they didn't....they need to come out of this big and get the puck in the net.
On a side bar...I know Federko knows his hockey and I don't expect former players to be polished but the guy needs glasses....he constantly says things two and three times over that just ain't true.

Now the non-trade of Tkachuk is looking like a mistake. The guy has been average, at best since then and it looks less and less likely that we'll make the playoffs. Could have built a little more for next year and been rid of a guy that is proving to not be the "leader" we needed him to be. I don't hold it against Davidson or anyone in management. Heck, we all have 20/20 vision in hindsight. But dayum, I sure thought he would step up for the run.

What is the status on no-show Tkachuk anyway? I heard he took a shot to the wrist and didn't come back. Is he out for the season? A game? Should we even care?

I'll tell you what his status is.....he QUIT!

His big ass should be parked infront of the goalie making life miserable for him. We haven't scored any goals because the opposition goalie gets a clear view of every shot put up.

On the other end....watch the hell Mason is going through....will somebody PLEASE clear out the forking crease!!! I'm a big Jackman fan.....but he's a no-show as well.

This is playoff hockey.....and the Blues have no experience with it....and the few who do have the experience seem to have no stomach for the physical play it takes.

Piss on Tkachuck.

It's hard to say what they should have done without knowing what they COULD have done. I'll give JD the benefit of doubt for keeping Tkachuk. Pretty frustrating now though.
Makes me wonder about your Pronger plan Sptsman but this ain't the year for us no matter.
For what we pay the guy I hope we can move Jackman out next year. It ain't lack of effort but for a 'sposed top D man he just doesn't execute well enough.

I think Jackman has been one of the top performers this year. He's a calming influence in their zone....BUT....I agree that he hasn't shown the toughness you expect from your top defenseman.....it's been especially evident the last few games as opposing teams have clogged our crease.

If they lose 2 more games fairly quickly I say let Bishop finish out the year and get some good experience.

To be fair to Jackman, he has been the best player on "D" And he was never supposed to be the #1 guy back there. Between Brewer and Johnson, he should not have had to take the lead. That being said, he is a pro and he is being paid very well. He needs to step it up right now!

griffin, you are spot-on about this being playoff hockey. Every game is critical and the teams are playing like it. The checking is tighter, the games are more physical and you have to earn every goal you get. I think this is where the youth shows and the 80+ games start to take their toll on these kids that aren't used to it. They're now facing real adversity and it is up to the coaches and veterans to get them through it. So far, they're not!!

I would still go after Pronger in the off-season. I know some of you guys think Perron is the second coming but I would trade him in a heartbeat for Pronger. Not that Perron isn't good. Heck, I think he has the potential to be an all-star. But Pronger IS an all-star and has 2-3 years left in the tank. He can solve two of the three biggest problems they have. Add in the mentoring factor for Erik Johnson and his value is immeasurable. Trade a high draft pick and Perron (or any of our young guns) for Pronger and this team will make the playoffs, maybe even The Cup Finals in 2010 or 2011. I think they're that close. The third element is a big strong scoring fowrard, like Shanahan used to be or like Tkachuk is supposed to be...

You get Karia and Johnson back, these kids have another year under their belt, you add the forward they need and get Pronger = The Cup

Man......you're killing me....because I don't disagree on the benefits of that trade.....but I've watched SO MANY good young players go on to be stars for other teams over the years that I'm willing sit and be patient....hell, LOTS of Blues have won a Stanley Cup....ater we let them go. Perron is the same.

Still.....you couldn't begin to put a price on Pronger's value to Johnson's development.

How's this....if Perron is traded just don't tell me about it.

Look, if you keep Perron and don't shore up this defense, it will be another 20 years of making the playoffs with no Cup... Unger, Babych, Petterson, Federko, Hull, Oates... the list goes on. Offense wins games, defense wins championships!!

As I see it, his team has three major flaws. #1 is moving the puck out of our own end and making that transition. If Pronger isn't the best defenseman in the league he is in the top 5 and he is arguably the best at moving the puck. Johnson can be that guy but only after a few more years of development and who better to learn it from? Getting Pronger solves the immediate need and his mentoring, combined with Johnson's talent, could potentially solve the long term need. #2 is a strong, physical defensive play. That is clearing out the crease and pasting guys to the boards. Again, Pronger is in the top 2 or 3 at this. I actually think the Johnson can be the next Pronger but Polak will be the best defensive defensman this team has seen in a long time. Again, Pronger can do it for a few more years but what he can teach and show these kids is invaluable. #3 is the strong, scoring forward. While getting Pronger won't solve this problem, there can be no question that we would better offensively with is ability to move the puck up the ice.

'Nuf said, go get Pronger and make the deal...

You can wear your Perron replica jersey in memory...

The three issues you identified are the sames ones I do....so we agree.

I think you can get pronger for Backes and a high draft pick....and I think Perron will develope into twice the scorer Backes is....no, he won't ever be as physical....but he will become a true scorer.

I think Perron is too high of a price to pay. Pronger can be had for less.

Fork Pronger. How quickly you forget his total lack of leadership, cheap penalties at crucial points in games, ego, etc... Why would teams allow him to leave, because they can't stand the guy.

STFU ... This is important dammit, it's hockey!! I've spent the better part of 40 years glued to radios, TV's and seats in both the Arena and this current contraption they replaced it with (not a fan of all the crap they play and show ... just give me Ernie Hayes on the organ and real fans in the seats) and I want to see Cup hoisted here!!

Backes has the potential to be that Shanahan-type player but he also a few years away from it. I honestly think he would be harder to replace than Perron. But we can argue that all day...

I think you are mistaken about Pronger's trade value. I think he wasn't traded at the deadline because they wanted too much and knew they could get more in the off-season, with more teams bidding for him. I'll bet he goes for at least one high draft pick and one top-line prospect or young NHL'er (like Perron or Backes). And he is more valuable to us for a variety of reasons (see brilliant posts above by me).

As far as his "lack of leadership" and unnecessary penalties and ego, blah, blah, blah... I'm not concerned. He was good enough to win a Cup with the ducks,eh? He has matured and would also be playing for an organIzation that is far different than the one when he left here. His wife is from here and he likes STL. I think you would see a more mature and smarter player... The reason he will be trade bait is that they need cap room and he is only signed until the end of next year. They know he's not staying in California and they want value for him. Many teams will give a fair price just for the one year rental. Any deal the Blues make would have to include an extension of at least 1-2 years. If they couldn't get him to sign an extension, I would agree that the price is too high. But I think the extension is a no-brainer...

Look, I a big Pronger fan....I have been since the day he got here and everyone else was whining about the trade. You could see from the beginning that his footwork and passing were world class....and like I said, I enjoy a defenseman with a mean streak....I think it's essential to be truly great at that position.

I would love for him to come back to the Blues.

That being said, I also see greatness in Perron.....more then I see in Oshie, Backes, or any other youngster on that team. He has great hands, and good vision.....and he's way above the average skater. That kid is only 20.....and he's a perennial 30-40 goal scorer in 2 or 3 years....I don't think you let that go.

You could be right about Backes......and I admit he's a player....but I see what he is now, and not alot of potential to be much better.

You may be right about the price for Pronger.....but I see the Ducks looking to cut way back....and draft picks will be what gets him in my opinion.....along with 1 or 2 decent prospects that come at a reduced salary....but not a first line player....which is what Perron may be as early as next year.

I'm Certain That Don Cherry Is My Dad!

LOWER TORONTO-- For the first sixteen years of my life, I had no idea who my father was. I was raised by my mother, a former hockey-groupie, and she had told me that my father was a reckless, Zamboni operator who had died in a freak ice-resurfacing accident on Lake Athabasca. I never questioned her, because I had no reason to.

But it was when I turned 17, and I was at a Maple Leafs game--they were playing the Montreal Canadiens--when I began to suspect that my mother was not forthright with my lineage. I had seen "him" before, the flamboyant hockey celebrity who appeared weekly on Hockey Night In Canada, but never in person, and never up close.

During the second intermission Don Cherry saw me from across the concourse level. Of course, he was surrounded by dozens of adoring hockey fans, mostly women--and why not? He has all the charm of a Baltic prince. But when his eyes caught mine, there was shock and realization, an unexplainable recognition that hit him like a Tie Domi hip check.

I knew at once that this was my true father. And Mr. Cherry must have concluded the same, as his demeanor changed. He must have immediately noticed the resemblance--and who wouldn't? I wanted to speak to him right then and there, but unfortunately he was swept away in a wave of admirers.

I should have figured it out sooner. It certainly explained my love for the Boston Bruins and my appreciation for high-collared shirts. I had always thought it was a desperate cry for attention. I never had a father-figure in my life.

What will he do, this icon of Canadian sports, now that he's seen me? Will he acknowledge me as his daughter during an upcoming broadcast of "Coach's Corner" on Hockey Night In Canada? Will he interrupt Ron Maclean during one of his whimsical commentaries, stating his paternity before a live national audience, stirring up more of the same controversy for which he is best known?

I'm not sure if I'm ready to accept the mantle of responsibility attached to the Cherry legacy. I know I could deliver the same brand of adversarial anecdotes as the Grape One--it's in my blood--but would I be accepted by the critical Canadian crowds?

I know I could learn to speak more like you. "Oh father, I know I'm a good-lookin' kid, doncha know. You're tops in my book too I tell ya. Hey, listen, I understand you've got your pride, and heck, you've got to what you got to do. Give it 110%, and do it for the team eh? That's hockey!"

I read your first paragraph MB and suffice to say let's get on with hockey dammit!

How much will Pronger's contract consume of the cap??
Spstman it's too dam late to give anything like a Perron for Pronger......to make that deal and fall short while Perron moves on is the old way of the Note....no more!
I expect JD to make a major move or two in the offseason....but I hope it ain't Perron for Pronger! I would def consider Perron nucleus to wtf this club should be building with. I wouldn't throw Polak out there for him either!
I say what I say of Jackman cuzz the guy can't execute well enough....he is not good with transition passing and he loses way too many scraps for the puck....and he ain't exactly a threat from the point. He ain't a bum but spend the 4 mil on sumbody else.
And keep Bishop on the bench til the fat lady sings! Loud!
This thing ain't over yet boys!

Well, he's one Dude that hates the Russians, and isn't afraid to say it, but the man is just over-exposed here, like the rest of sport.

When I think "Blue", I don't think about the Leafs, or the Notes though. I think "Blue", his dog, and I never knew this, but when I went to insure Casey, he has a pet insurance line, called "Cherry Blue".

You Might Be Picked In The Next Hockey Draft

OTTAWA-- The Ministry of Sports, on the advice of the Honourable Wayne Gretzky, has put forward a recommendation to parliament to improve the current legislation in the National Sports Act. The proposed amendment, expected to receive a speedy ascent, will require that "all able-bodied people between the ages of nine and nineteen" participate for at least two years in the national sport of ice hockey.

The Act currently requires only one year of service, and is limited to young men.

The majority of Canadians are supportive of the law, which was first introduced in 1972 after Team Canada's dramatic victory over the Russians. At the time, there weren't enough rinks to handle the overwhelming influx of players, but the government was able to generate more revenue for the hockey program by increasing the tax on miniature replica Stanley Cups sold to European tourists.

Upon completion of service, Canadian hockey players (with sufficient skills) are invited to continue to play hockey as a career. Those who have become a liability are encouraged to take up curling.

"We've worked hard to adjust some of our more dated legislation to reflect changes in Canada over the past 30 years," said Maurice Bellevue, minister responsible and table-hockey legend. "Canadians now expect their national teams to win, not just to place third or fourth, and there is a belief that every Canadian should be able to jump over the boards and trade punches with the best Russia or the United States can offer."

The amendment will expand the draft to include young women and even special needs children. Sled hockey and ringette will become acceptable alternatives for federal hockey duty.

Presently, Sweden is the only other country that demands hockey service of their citizens, although Russia once had a strong program developed within in their army. The island nation of Trinidad has a similar law that encompasses the sport of high-jumping, and Cuba had one for kayaking, but none of the athletes ever returned.

"To me it's as Canadian as Medicare," said Nelson Fitzgerald, the coach of the "Threshers," a nationally-sponsored team of disadvantaged farm youths in Saskatoon. "They can cut the Crow rate, they can tax cheese up to my eyeballs, but don't take away these essential programs that keep us from degenerating into some kind of free-market economy, where only the rich (who can afford all the equipment needed) can play."

Most Canadian youths enter into the program willingly, but there is a draft held every June. Everyone loves hockey, so there is very little pressure put on Canadian citizens. And since there is no money spent on the Canadian military, more funding is available for hockey programs, allowing Canada to produce more world-class athletes.

"There is no greater honour than to serve," said The Great One, himself a product of the hockey conscription program. "We are the soldiers of our sport, and the ice is our battlefield." It is said that Gretzky may have ended up in lacrosse if hockey service had not been mandatory.

Although there is very little resistance to the law a small minority try to circumvent it by enrolling children in roller hockey, a perversion of the national sport. "That's a frickin' atrocity," blurted Don Cherry, a pioneer in Canada's militant hockey service. "Why not allow our children to wear diapers until they're 16? If we coddle the kids now, the future of our great nation will be in the hands of nanny-clutching bedwetters."

Satire.

Went to the game and sat in some primo seats. Only second game of the year for me... That sucks!! I forgot how much you miss when you watch it on TV.

Here are a few observations from the good seats:

Those kids can flat play. They have the God-given talent, the heart, desire and effort. But dayum, they make a lot of mistakes!! Out of position too often, taking chances at the wrong times, getting stuck out on the ice too long. Fortunately, they have the skill and speed to recover from most mistakes but I look at it two ways. First, if they do make the playoffs, they will likely get smoked because of the youth and inexperience. You just can't make those kinds of mistakes against teams like San Jose and Detroit. Second, think how good they can be once they learn how to play the game at the NHL level.

We are sorely lacking a puck moving defenseman. If they stumbled coming out of their own zone and in transition once, they stumbled a dozen times or more. Goof grief that is frustrating. Get Pronger.

Perron has skill but he needs to put on at least 25 lbs or learn to skate like Dennis Savard or Gretzky. That kid gets knocked off the puck to easily. Good hands and good vision though!!

Tkachuk played soft and seems to hit like he doesn't want to break the eggs under his uniform. He finally parked in front of the net in the 3rd period and we scored. He didn't get the assist on that first goal but he was as key as the others. He parked in front of the keeper, screened him and allowed the play to happen.

Oshie is going to be a great player but needs to learn when to take chances and when not to gamble. He frequently gets caught on long shifts and puts the team in jeopardy. Once he learns the NHL game, he will be on the all-star team every year!

Go Blue!!

Both Perron and Oshie get caught out there ALOT.....that's obvious even on TV. I'll be watching, see the shift head for the bench...ad there goes Perron into the offensive zone again.

Wihtout a doubt the biggest mistake they KEEP making.

Most of the mistakes are from being too aggressive. That's not all bad for talented kids. You can always tame a tiger but it can be real hard to light a fire under someone... They'll learn! It isn't the rush into the zone (at the end of a shift, when thy should have dumped and changed), it is the getting caught 15 seconds later in your own zone, with no legs, trying to help defend...

The other observation is my continued dislike for NHL officiating. Other than that buffoon Bettman, that runs the league, officiating is the weak link of the NHL. Those clowns blew at least two calls that were disgraceful. I don't mind when they miss a call. It happens. What ruins the game is when they do make-up calls or call things that just weren't there. I have officiated in at least three (3) different sports. I've been to some clinics and I have been yelled at by players, coaches and fans. One rule I was taught over and over was that you call what you see!! You don't anticipate what could happen. You don't call what you assume must have happened. You call what you see!! You can defend missing a call by simply saying, "I didn't see it..." You cannot defend a penalty that you called, when the violation never happened. These jerks last night were not the worst I've seen and I rarely defend Tkachuk ... but he got called for two penalties that were simply not penalties. One may have been marginal but the other was a hooking or tripping call that was just horrible.

Carry on!!

I think Perron could use a few more pounds as well......he needn't be a tough guy but he should skate forward more often.
Oshie tries to do too much.....that's natural for his experience and the guy has so much energy he has to be doin sumpthin at all times....he has nearly cost us a number of times with late game stupid penalties....but he's easy to forgive.
I wish Polak would take more shots from the point.....he can wind it up and we need a bonafide threat from there.
The deal with makin the playoffs is all about experience for these young guys and the whole team in general....I am thinkin most of this team will stay in tact and it would be great to get this under their belt NOW.
And hell if we can get to the 8 spot keep goin to 7!!

So, what happens tonight? Vancouver is playing strong these days and they have a pretty decent shot at overtaking Chicago and Calgary in the standing. Both of those teams are stumbling a bit and Vancouver is likely hungry to move up a spot or two in the standings...

Close call Sptsman.

I tell ya....that was just a great hockey game.....and I know we got a lot of good young talent with potential but you have to say Oshie is the most valuable of them all. He is everywhere impacting everything every time he's out there......his goal tonight was absolutely beautiful.....you got 10 year veterans that wouldn't have held that shot like he did. Forget about potential. The guys doin it now.
I hope Mason can hold up....Big game with columbus then the HUGE road trip ahead......you can't ask for any more than this....

Just remember.....we've waited a long time for this...and it ain't THIS yet. Whatever we get this year is a bonus.....but goddamn it's fun to watch.

Nice to see the building full and the Blues fans having fun again.

Only 1 pt. out of 8th.....but also only 1 pt. out of 7th....they can make it.

I still say it takes better then 90 pts. to get in....count 'em.

Good win for the boyz... I didn't get to see the 3rd but was very impressed with the regroup, after a slow start. The Oshie goal was sweeeeeet!!

Will almost certainly take 90 or more now... They'll need to take at least 3 out of the 4 points, from the back-to-back games, with the Blue Jackets... If they win that first game, don't be shocked to see Bishop in goal for the second. Mason is playing well but he is human. Riding a goalie that hard can wear the dude out and possibly help him get into some bad habits or a bit of a slump...

Go Blue...

Whelp 8 games to go. We don't really play heads up against any team we are battling for the playoff spot....however THREE games are against the Jackets and we need at least two of 'em.
We have to be 1 game better than the teams in front of us...so without some outside help here that's prolly to win 5/6 of 8 or even 7 pending the others.
I just hope they finish strong........

6 teams within 3 pts. of each other fighting for 2 spots. I'm thinking now that it takes 92 pts to get in. We need 13 out of 16 pts. Of course, so do the other 5 teams. IN looking at the 65 schedules.....ours looks to be about right in the middle.....but the number of road games puts us in the top 2, at least, in toughness.

As far as I'm concerend, this IS the Blues playoffs, whether they get in or not it's great for a young team to experience.

Yeah retaliations have definitely stepped up.....you gotta admit the hit on Nash sparked the Jackets.....but I laughed hard when I saw him leave the penalty box and IMMEDIATELY beeline it to the corner to clean his clock. They will be looking for him tonight at their place.
Tkuchuk got the game star but it was Mason's.
It will be truely incredible if this team wins/ties today on their ice.

Tonight will not be a close game. Columbus will come out with fire in their eyes and misplaced anger. The Blues will have been told by Murray to expect it, keep their cool and focus on winning the hockey game.

      #181568 - 03/29/09 07:48 PM

Never a doubt with this game. They had this one won before they even stepped off the plane. We are simply a better team than Columbus and there was no way they would have a meltdown after blowing last night's lead and needing the shootout to get the 2nd point... You knew they would play a hard 60 minutes of hockey and would only allow a goal or two. Heck, one of those goals was a fluke bounce!! (officiating was terrible again today - both ways)

What "The Note" needs to worry about is Chicago, Detroit and Minnesota, in 4 days. Chicago has not been playing all that great and there are some nervous folks in the Windy City. I've been up there on business several times in the last 4-6 weeks and I've been listening to the sports radio. They're a little concerned with the Hawk's play as of late. So, I think it will be a tough game but I give us a real good shot at winning that one. Detroit may be another matter. They are simply a better team. The Blues need an A+ effort and Detroit to have a slightly off-night. If they bring their A-game, we're screwed. Considering they're in a battle for 1st with San Jose, we may just see their A-game. Minnesota is very beatable, even at home. But that will be the 3rd game in 4 days and the boyz in blue may not have enough in the tank to finish them off. I saw some tired legs today. Fortunately, Columbus looked even more tired. I just hope these kids can go the full ride. Some of them have never had to to this and certainly not at this level. This is just as intense as playoff hockey!!!

If they can get 4 or 5 of the 6 points available on this swing, I'll feel real good about making it. If they only get 3 or less, it will be tough...

Amazing how these kids are stepping up!!

Go Blue!!

Zactly right .....although I think they are nervous in Columbus now too....they gave away two goals with horrible play.
The Wings sure didn't help us any today.....yet on top of all their talent advantage they seem to have OUR number.
Hell the Wings may well end up 2nd.....8th may be a better spot than 7 for us.....I just know it's a hell of a lot better than 9th.

The finer points and rules of hockey explained in SLAPSHOT:

Jim Carr: Hi, Jim Carr again. Denis, I know that some in our audience don't know the finer points of hockey. Could you tell them, for example, what is icing?
Denis Lemieux: Well, um, icing happen when the puck come down, bang you know, before the other guys you know. Nobody there, you know. My arm go comes up then the game stop then start up.
Jim Carr: I see. What is high-sticking?
Denis Lemieux: High-sticking happen when the guy take the stick, you know, and he go like that
[high-sticks Jim Carr]
Denis Lemieux: you know. You don't do that.
Jim Carr: You don't do that?
Denis Lemieux: Oh no, never, never.
Jim Carr: Why not?
Denis Lemieux: Against the rules. You know, you're stupid when you do that. Just some English pig with no brains, you know.
Jim Carr: Uh, what is slashing?
Denis Lemieux: Slashing is um, like that
[demonstrates on Jim Carr]
Denis Lemieux: you know.
Jim Carr: Mm-hmm. And there's a penalty for that?
Denis Lemieux: Yeah and for the trip also, you know like that
[demonstrates]
Denis Lemieux: . And for hook like this
[demonstrates]
Denis Lemieux: . And for spear, you know, like that.
[demonstrates]
Denis Lemieux: You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by yourself, you know and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free.

I will venture a guess that back in the old days when Mel was wearing a grey wool fedora , if a player scored 3 goals ,gentlemen would throw their hats on the rink.

Whats the deal with the octopussies?

yeah they did....never got into their game and never knew what hit them. The Hawks were ready to play.
IF they had won tonight they prolly coulda coasted 3-2 on the remainder of the season. Now we gotta go 4-1 minimum to close it out and the "1" could well be tomorrow night. We can't tie with the Oilers cuzz they get the nod.
Lots to go.....I think they can do it.

He's been terrible of late.....he fails at half the things he sposed to be doin out there...even simple tasks....and they got behind him FOUR times last night.
I don't know why he gets so much ice time it is obvious he's playing bad.

Jackman has been the best defenseman on this team the entire season and it isn't even close!!! The whole team sucked last night and I blame Tkachuck, Jackman, McKee, Hinote and any "veteran" player that didn't lead the charge. The only veteran I saw working at full speed last night was Andy McDonald. To single out Jackman is just dead wrong.

Jackman is a defensive-minded defenseman. He has never been a prolific scorer or offensive-minded player. That's not why they have him and that's not his role. Quite frankly, the two guys who are supposed to be filling that role are sitting in the press box with injuries (Brewer and Johnson). Jackman has been thrown into a #1 role and he's handled it as well as his talents will allow him to handle it. The dude isn't Chris Pronger or Nicklas Lidstrom.

I'm not trying to pump the guy up, just giving a little perspective. He's never going to be a Norris Trophy winner. He's being asked to lead a defense with rookies and limited God-given talent. He's playing far more minutes that he has ever played and he's put on the ice for nearly every critical situation and against every team's top lines...

The reality is that this team was flat last night and should have lost 6-0. Chicago had just been handed two losses and had something to prove to themselves and the their fans. They did just that.

Also, keep in mind, this Blues team is fun to watch and rarely gets outworked by any team. But make no mistake, they have some glaring holes in their game and teams that are ahead of them in development and talent level will frequently expose those weaknesses. You may see worse tonight if Detroit brings their A game...

Thank you Andy....you saved me 10 minutes of my life posting the exact same thing.

Jackman looks tired the last few games.....but I figure it's because he has carried the ball back there the ENTIRE season.

You boys running him down don't know much about hockey is the only thing I can figure. He's been as solid as a rock, and if you watch him, you will find that he is almost never out of position.

Yeah, he ain't flashy, doesn't have the big shot, and never stands out......but do you EVER see someone from another team wanting to take him on?? There's a reason for that.

He hasn't looked sharp the last 2 or 3 games....but Sptsman is right on with is assessment.

P.S. - if the Blues lose tonight, the have to win all four of their remaining games to have a CHANCE to make it in, and they will need help from other teams.....write it down.....90 is the magic number.

Jackman is probably not playing anywhere near 100%. Cut the guy a little slack, he is the best we have and he bleeds blue.

He hasn't been playing well for at least the last month. His game is off, he's prolly tired from all the damn ice time he does......the critique I gave him is mild compared to others who know the game well.....it ain't anti-blue or dislike they need to cut his time on the ice for everbody's sake..and it ain't just cuzz they lost last night it's been goin on for some time.

I have no idea how you can say he hasn't played well for the last month, while he has logged the most ice time for the best team in hockey during that stretch.

For chrissakes, Jack man has been, and IS, the anchor of the Blues defense.....a defense that hasn't lost many games.

The Blues has had an offense problem this yeay....but they haven't had much of a defense problem. Thank Jackman for that.

Just curious who that is? Mostly because I want to know who not to listen to for hockey analysis.

If you were told that the Blues would lose Brewer & Johnson for the season and McKee for a significant portion, then have Jackman as their defensive leader, what would you have guessed the Blues chances were for getting in the playoffs? I would have guessed zero. I wasn't too high on this defense before the injuries. But Jackman and Polak have stepped up and played solid defensive hockey for the Blues. Considering the youth and inexperience of Polak and the limited skill level of Jackman, I am nothing short of impressed with this defense.

I suppose we'll just agree to disagree on this one...

Because the two are not inclusive.
My point is he should log LESS time because he hasn't been on his game.....and I say our record for the last month would have stood....hell maybe improved. I think he's exhausted...he looks slower than usual and he's had stone hands for the most part. Rest him more and see...that's all I'm sayin.
I have nuthin against the guy...he ain't lazy and he's workin hard but it just ain't happenin and Murray should put the best out there for the most ice time no matter who is the highest paid .

Maybe he's talkin about me I guess. Don't know, don't care. All I know is Jackman is minus 20 right now and just seems to look lost. He's slow to the puck and just doesn't seem to have his legs under him. Granted I'm sure he's exhausted with the minutes he's logged.
I'm just frustrated cause they're so fuggin close they can smell it. Knowing full well Chi town was gonna come out hungry we needed that win going into Detroit.

So, who are they? If they're your drinkin' buddies, so be it. If they are real NHL analyst, I'm curious who it is.

The dude is -20 because he's not an offensive-minded player and is playing an impossible role for a defensive-minded defenseman. You watch tonight. He'll be out there when Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Hossa and the like are on the ice. He's being asked to keep the other teams A-lines in check and almost never has an opportunity to score.

Who the fork are you going to play in his place if you rest him?!?!?! They are in a real hurt for defensemen and simply don't have anyone else. (Of course I wanted to trade for Pronger and you guys all protested that we couldn't give up Perron or Bergland or some other prospect. Now we're seeing that bite us in the rear.)

Again, let's keep some perspective. This team is rebuilding and finds themselves slightly ahead of schedule. If they can get in the playoffs, that would be great. If not, you won't find me on the ledge of a tall building. Defense is a weakness right now and the skilled teams are exposing it. It's not any one player's fault. It is an unfortunate situation and I am pretty pleased with how the players that are left standing have handled it.

Who to play if we rest him?? christ we only need to take 4-5 min per game away from him...Polak, Weaver, spread it out...this ain't rocket science. I think the D has done great and the team did good at the trade deadline.

griffin says he's been down for the past 2-3 games and I am guessing you agree....well for me it's been goin on for longer....'scuse me for thinkin..........but seems we agree halfway..... now the logical thing to do as we head into the final crunch stretch is to DO SUMPTHIN about it! I say keep him ther for sure but lower his load by %20 and see if it helps.

Perspective? bwaaaaaaa........that cracks me up.

Maybe the Zamboni driver can play "D"

I thought he was draggin' arse last night, to be sure. Then again, I thought most of the team was draggin' arse. But I disagree with the assessment that he has been bad for several games.

Keep in mind, this team does not have ANYONE that can do an effective job of getting the puck out of our zone, through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone. With that weakness, you're going to put a tremendous amount of pressure on the defense, especially against teams like the Hawks and Wings that will capitalize on that like a shark smelling blood, in the water. That's not Jackman's fault. But he has to bear the brunt of this weakness...

I don't know if I'll get to see the game tonight or not. I have a high school baseball game in Forest Park, assuming it doesn't get rained out. I may not get home in time to watch...

Let's hope the Blues can knock the Wings off their game and get a point or two tonight...

Looked like Backes got that 5th goal too.
Can't believe Babcock started Cronklin....he wants comp for the goalie job in the playoffs but that was a big mistake to sit Osgood out against us. They got some problems there.

Big win for the boyz in blue... They need to reload and get ready for Dallas... I hope Murray has enough sense to let these guys rest, even make them rest. These games are so intense and have to be draining. We have NO EXCUSE for not beating Dallas. They're all but out of the playoffs and have been playing poorly as of late. Hopefully the Blues can jump on them early and help them get their dobbers down...

A week to go. Her's how it sits:

Columbus ...89 pts...78 games...chic, chic, stl, min

Anneheim....88pts....79 games...SJ, dal, pheonix

Nashville....86 pts...79 games...chic, det, minn

STL.........86 pts....79 games...pheonix, columbus, colorado

Minn........83 pts....78 games...det, dal, nash, columbus

Edmon....83 pts....79 games...LA, calgary, calgary

There's 5 different ways to look at this but with a game in hand and 88pts Columbus should be in unless Chicago decides to start playing hockey.
Anneheim has 2 pts on us and an easy way to get 4 more...they SHOULD BE in.
That leaves one slot open with Nash and STL tied up for it....the schedule is in our favor IF Chic and Detroit can play to win against Nash!!
Minn has a game in hand...(I hope they are still in it when they play Nashville) but they have a tough schedule and sit 3 pts back right now.
Edmonton too 3 pts back and has to play Calg twice ...not good odds.

Now all this is based on the better teams winning their games....last night the exact opposite happened with all of 'em and we lost ground. Will SJ, Chic and Det play hard to win or lay down??

Blues need to win 'em all and grab whatever falls off the table....there are no more gimmies left.

I'm still to pissed about the laydown last night. The Blues decided with about 5 mins to go that a tie or loss would be OK. Both the #3 and #4 goals for the Stars were the result of rookies not playing NHL hockey. On #3 Perron did not take his man in the defensive zone and he got an easy goal. If that kid thinks he is so gifted he doesn't have to come back in the defensive zone and help (i.e. do his job), he had better rack up 100+ points every year. That won't due. The #4 goal was simply an undressing of Polak. I'm high on that kid because he plays smart and loves to hit. So why the hell does he decide to play defense by poke-checking a man in front of his own net? A simple body check, knocks him off the puck and Mason clears it out. Rookie mistakes!! And I don't even want to talk about the game winner. Four players standing in a box, flat-footed, as if they were short-handed, just waiting for the Stars to take shots at Mason!!! Did anyone think it might be important to actually play hockey in OT?!?!?!?!

OK rant over...

The rest of the story is simple. They need to win out and need some help. Had they won last night, their destiny was in their hands. Now they have to rely on other teams that may be coasting and preserving energy for the playoffs...

Go Blue...

I didn't say nuthin about the game last night cuzz I fell asleep between the 2-3rd period!
Your recap doesn't sound too encouraging. Hopefully Murray saw it the same way.

Was sitting with two buddies, watching the game. Between regulation and OT, I said "If the Blues come out and play like they ended the 3rd, it will take Dallas about 2 mins to score..." I was wrong. They played worse and it took less than a minute...

I'm not making any excuses but every team needs out go out there and play hard to win. Now right now we got our own issues to worry about and that's fine....but friggen SJ better not be laying down on teams still in it. I figure Chicago and Detroit know they better get turned around so they should be bustin butt.....and as for the ones who are out of it I know damn well they will be lookin to knock off whoever they can along the way. Just so it's all level is all I ask.

Anaheim and Minnesota lose tonight, Columbus only gets a point in an overtime loss.....that helps.

That's fine.....but Anaheim only has Dallas and Pheonix left....and they can easily win both.

Bottom line.....Blues need to win out.

I thought 90 would do it.....and it may, but now, 92 gets it done for sure.

uhhhhhhhhhh....I think I'm wrong about the Note over the Ducks if we both win out....I thought it was fewer losses but now I'm thinkin it's most wins? That be the Ducks.

The only thing I can say about Bryzalov staying in the game is that he must be holding one of Gretzky's kids for ransom.

Blues turned it on bigtime...great forecheck...one more period of solid play should do it for tonight.

That game meant nothing to the Wings and everything to Nashville. Not hard to see why they didn't give 100%. Sucks though!!

Maybe, just maybe Columbus will come in with the attitude that they're in and give themselves a little rest. Quite frankly, it doesn't matter. The Blues fate is in their own hands. Win out and they're in. Lose or get an OTL and they'll need help.

Look for a strong start and a win for the Note tonight!!

The Note is in! What a battle!
That's prolly one of the best games I've seen Tkachuk play. Hell the whole team was on ....they played as if it were for the final four not 8th place.

I don't know who we're playin just yet but please don't tell this team they are 'sposed to lose ....these guys think they are goin for the Cup.

Yep, they're ripe for a letdown. It will be a challenge to keep them "up" for every game. These past 10-15 games have been as intense as the playoffs. It's hard to keep that level of intensity for that long.

Let's look at the positive though. They're in!! Mason is playing at top level and looks solid. His mechanics are sound and he seems to always be in the correct position. He's giving up few rebounds and directing the ones he gives up, to the corners. They're scoring and it is coming from more than one line. The "D" is solid. albeit a little lacking in puck movement and offensive punch. Tkachuk and Backes are using their size, in front of the net and doing their jobs!! If the intensity stays strong, I see the Note giving San Jose or Detroit all they want.

Go Blue!!

It's amazing how mentally sharp Mason has remained thruout all of this....I am guessing he has never played better than right now. I am curious about the momentum thing too and how long they can keep it up......but .......I'm done worrying or wondering.......yep......that's right Leo....I'm a believer!! !!

Who's played better down the stretch than the Note? Uh... no one. They are hot, believe, and could make a little noise. I wouldn't want to play them in the first round if I were Detroit...

I wouldn't want to play anyone if I were Detroit. Those boyz are not looking as sharp as that should, for the level of talent they have. I picked them to come out of the West and win The Cup again!! Now I'm not so sure. Their goaltending has been average at best and their "D" is not nearly as strong as it should be. They are tough on the power play but they give up too many goals... It wouldn't surprise me to see Chicago make a run. They have really put it together in the last several games. I especially like their "D".

The only hope the Blues have is to simply outwork and out-hustle the other other teams. They must play physical and tight-checking games. If they try to get into a shootout, with end-to-end action, they will lose, especially with the likes of Detroit or Chicago...

Damn boys....who'd of thunk it in December....a win tommorrow and the Note is in 6th place....playing Vancouver in the first round. That ain't a bad spot to be in.....we wouldn't play Detroit, if the rest of the series go to the highest seed, until the Conference finals.

I wasn't prepared to say this even 2 weeks ago.....but if we win tommorrow look for a crazy run by this team.

By God......we got a chance to do something here not done in damn near 40 years......go to the finals and get wiped out by Boston.

bwaaaaaaaaaa...............we spend 3 months at hells pace to go from last to 8th and now we can jump 2 spots in one game!!! Good things happen when you're the best in the league for 90 days.

Thanks to Minn for playin their guys out to take out the Preds.

For once in my life I wish it WAS Detroit. But it's SJ or the Caunucks......and I can gaurantee neither of them had us on their radar and prolly ain't likin what they see now.

I'd just soon win today to end on a win...get the 2 points and play the Canucks. That's plenty enough drama for me.

And Sptsman's right.....on this anyway bwaa......can the Blues sustain this intensity?.....bounce back if they drop 2 games into it? This is playoff hockey now and EVERY team will be trying to do the same.

Look at us...we all said just get in this year for the experience so it will pay off next year. Now I'm a believer so's if they lose I can't just slough it off....I gotta get pizzed off about it!

Brang on whoever and let's get at it. This believer chit is nerve-racking.

There's plenty of room on this wagon! Come aboard...

Solid win and great way for the boyz to wrap up the season. Best thing to do now is enjoy the ride, however long it lasts!! Vancouver is a damn good team and they have been playing pretty solid hockey. I'm sure they've been watching and will not get caught off guard by a surging Blues team.

It's playoff hockey and their isn't much better in all of sports!!!!!

The Canuts are gonna be tough. Luongo had a rough spell a few weeks ago but is back in FULL control....he's damn good....this team is just as hot as the Note with some big names to boot including the Sedin bro's .. They are favored to win for good reason. Their town expects them to win.

Since I'm a believer I call it for the Note. To do this right we need Mason to stay hot and then strong fore check thruout the series putting the puck on the net and crashin the net every chance they get. We gotta get in Luongos head and we prolly gotta split the opening series.

The pressure to win is on the Canuts...the Note will hopefully be just as they have been the past three months and havin fun while they do it.

All in all I thought we did pretty well for the first two periods but we were simply dominated by them in the third when we needed the tying goal. Keep in mind by doing "pretty good" that includes coming out nervous and a little scattered still yet somehow managing to play them fairly even. But the Nuts played the third on our end and stood us up pretty well with the game on the line.

Downside was one for 7 on the friggen power play.
Too many stupid penalties for playoff hockey...Tkachuk's for sure.
Not scoring 5 on 3 for 90 seconds!
Upside we ran with the big dog and still didn't play our best.
Mason was sharp.
It's one game of playoff exp a lot of Blues never had. Friday should be a different kind of game.

You see in today's paper Vancouvers coach has sand in his vagene over the Blues spraying his goaltender with ice. Thinks it's disrespectful and the zebras should call it....

Alright, where's Geoff Courtnall when you need him instead of spraying your netminder we'll just run em instead....

Louie and the crossbar are on fire!!!!

Blues have to win 4 of 5 now.......not sure we have the horses.

Still happy to be where we are.

Oshie and the kids need to settle the fork down.....then again, that's what this season is about....you can't learn without experiencing it.

Where's Karia??

Perron for Pronger...

Fun season. Good experience for them now. But this this is all but over. Vancouver is the better team (fewer holes) and clearly wants it more...

I still don't think we are out there playin our game...but maybe that credit should go to the Nuts.....and Luongo is the last guy to need 3 off the bar...you are livin right with that chit.

The losses are not hard to take cuzz the team is workin hard and that's all you can ask of this group. Backman is having a great series too......actually the D has been outstanding for what it is.

I want to see a win Sunday night......if it could be a 3 or 4 goal game it may impact the rest of the series. And you're right griff re the 4 of five...but win next two and then it is manageable.....then see who wants it more. Gotta get to Luongo.

I think being back home will help get them a win or two, but Luongo is standing on his head. The Canucks could go deep in the playoffs with him playing the way he is.

The boys don't seem to understand the concept of 60 minutes. Not 59, not 58, not 50. You let down for a half of a period like they did in the 1st half of the second period and almost any team in the playoffs will capitalize on it...

Again, good experience for the youngins and fun to see them get there. But they are out-classed and being out played by a better team.

I hope they can take the next one, just to keep from getting swept. That may be a tad demoralizing!!

Ok, I did it. I watched a hockey game. I even saw T.J. Oshie , who , by the way did not do chit that I could tell.

Casual observation tells me it is fast , violent and hectic. No wonder none of the players have their teeth. I still do not understand the rules or penalties , especially delayed penalties.

FOund out my wife of 20 years, who is from StL ,is a Blues fan.So, if they are on TV again I guess I will watch.

ALL the fans seemed to be into it and I liked the locker room shots at the break. The goalie was bruised like an offensive lineman in football.I could be a convert eventually.

ONly right here will the weakness show.....and it's as glaring as ever. We have no defensemen who can REALLY move the puck up ice....and we have no big, tough, scoring winger.

Johnson will fill one hole....and make the entire defense better......but Backes is NOT the answer for the other hole in my opinion. He's just not mean enough.

The Blues are outgunned here.....plain and simple.

Additionally......Murray has PANICKED!! You don't change one of the best penalty kills and power play units in hockey because they have a bad shift or two. And that tirade at the end of the second game was WAY off base.

Vancouver has it right.....this ain't the regular season....this is a SERIES.....you KEEP sending the message like Vancouver is doing, even if it means sending out your hitters at the end of a game you have won.

The Blues, from the top down, will benefit from this.....but it is what it is....a nice little season on the way to bigger things.

GO BLUE!!!!

The last two 3rd periods pretty much put the hammer down.

I think the Nuts are sending the same message cuzz they are winning griff......it's pretty easy to send out the same guys who continue to get it done for you....I didn't mind the special teams changes when you consider it was a must win and how total crap the first team has been doin ...but it didn't matter I'll give ya that. I think Hinotes absence came into play on that decision too.

B J Crombeen oughtta be shot. What a forkin idiot.

A big part of the misery is about playoff nerves and lack thereof......we may not be as good a team as Vancouver but at least the Nut's big guns have done in the playoffs what they have done all year and that's more than what the Note can muster.

Maybe 0-4 would be a good thing for this team to sit on over the summer you never know but I'd still like them to get out there and show the Blues of the past 60 days.

Perron for Pronger... Make the deal. I like Perron and he will enjoy success in the NHL. But he is under-sized, not well equipped for playoff hockey and has lapses where is is AWOL for periods, sometimes games at a time. He will be our next Pavol Demitra.

Give them Perron, a few draft picks and whatever else they want that doesn't cripple us... Get Pronger!!

2-3 years max... Anything after that has to be the Blues option. He has 2 good years left and maybe 3. Will he be the Norris Trophy winner? Doubtful. Will he still be one of the top 5-10 in the NHL? Yes!!! Is he exactly what they need for the development of Johnson and Polak? Yes!! Is he part of the answer to some of the current holes we have? Yes!!!

That deal just makes sense all the way around. The only reason they should not make it is if the Ducks simply want too much. And that is a very real possibility. He will command a high price.

You can also factor in the fact that STL is one of the few places he actually wants to be. His wife is from here and he says he loved his years here. I'm quite sure he sees what is happening with this organization and sees a real possibility of a Cup run in the next few years...

Even if they don't get Pronger, they need a top flight, puck moving defenseman. It is killing me to watch this team's inability to move the puck out of the zone with 1 or 2 quick passes. Taking 15-30 seconds to get out of your own end just destroys the opportunity to attack with any sustained pressure. These guys are losing their legs just after the puck goes into the offensive zone. They get it in and have to make a line change. Then you get the double whammy of not getting a good, sustained attack but also having them break out of their zone while we change lines. It has happened time and time again in this series.

I'm all for Pronger. But at a price. Doesn't work it doesn't work.

I wouldn't give up Perron and then pay him a mountain of money on top of that....he makes what...7 mil? And that's his old contract! We give up Perron and sign him now on this trade thing and he is an unrestricted free agent in ONE friggen year....he will then want the big bonzo contract to ride off into the sunset and we are then strapped with a guy who is on the down side and further could easily be hurt half the time. No thanks. That's the old Blues. Hell if anything wait a year and get him for the same cash he will want after we give up a good player!
And then there's Perron.....yeah he could be stronger but I know he ain't no Demitra!!! 50 pts his rookie year....let him simmer and see where he is in year 3.......all for a bargain price.
I couldn't agree more on the need for defense and the skill to move the puck and shoot the puck...but 35 is too old to mortgage the farm.

Piss on Perron for Pronger....and you know I'm a big Pronger fan. Perron is a perennial 40 goal scorer in a few short years......Pronger is washed up in those same years, while Perron will have 10 more to play.

He'll get stronger......he's a BABY....and the most pure skilled player on the team.

Johnson will develope fine without Pronger.

You want Pronger.....give 'em Burgland....or however you spell that puzzzy's name....now there is a guy who is AFRAID to hit....which Perron ain't.

Andy I got to disagree here. I was all for Perron being traded for Pronger but not anymore. I agree with Griff that this kid has a ton of natural talent and has his best years hopefully ahead of him. I have seen many undersized guys have great NHL careers and while yes he is AWOL at times name someone on the blues this year that hasn't been. I really can't compare him to Demitra either. I never saw Pavol run around the ice and hit people and also never saw him get under peoples skin the way this kid does. I would love to have pronger back but these kids are good and we are going in the right direction for the first time in a long long time. One more thing defense has not been our number one problem this year, Plus we have Johnson back next year and we also have Petrangelo and Cole in the system and if they turn out to be half of what they say then we should be ok on D for awhile. Don't forget they have one of our best defensemen ever to work with them daily in MacInnis.

Hey Sptsman.......best player on the ice tonight, in a game with more pressure for the Blues then any in 5 years, was a 20 year old kid wearing #57. Get used to it. Next year he'll have 80 pts.......and will for years to come. That kid ain't going anywhere, take it to the bank.

Not knocking Perron. I think the kid has talent and he has the potential to become and remain a 1st line player in the NHL. But the only way your going to get a top-rate defenseman (or any top-rate player) under contract is to give up some value. If we could get him by giving up draft picks or other prospects, so be it.

Sad to see the season come to a close... IT will be fun to see what they do with free agency and/or trades, in the off season.

Still some great hockey to be played. I'll be taking in plenty of games, in the coming weeks. This is the best part of the NHL...

I hope the offseason is more fun than it is maddening.
We have a great foundation to move the team to the next level but the core of this team is under 28 and that means we need as much patience as we do any blockbuster deals. Whether Bishop is the real deal (please god) or not...JD and Pleau need to be thinking/moving towards 3 years to contend and imo this series pretty much confirms that.
I looked up the Pietrangelo kid with the Rivermen....he has 3 assists in 4 playoff games......not bad for a rookie D....

So the Blues get Karia, Johnson, Brewer back, and add Pietrangelo....now where are you? The defensive problem may be solved. Karia gives you another 50-70 pts, so the scoring problem gets some big help. Backes may or may not be the big grinding winger that we'll need......but Berglund sure as hell ain't. I don't know who will be available and at what price....but we need that guy. I'm not convinced about Mason, but Wamsley has done wonders with him so he is obviously coachable and talented....I have no idea about Big Ben......a guy who stands almost 7 foot tall in skates is an unknown in the NHL.

I think the core of the team right now is MacDonald, Oshie, Perron, Karia, Backes, Johnson, Brewer, and Mason...not in any order. That's almost 2 lines, a defensive pair, and a goalie.....you can add high end talent to that group using any of the others as bait.....but you leave that bunch alone.

On Oshie.....suprisingly bad playoff series for him. He looked lost and afraid he was gonna get a penalty most of the series. There's a guy who could have created havoc for Louongo in the crease......and he never showed.

I think Oshie tried to do too much and fell flat. He should be a big role player guy for us in the years ahead...and valuable at it...but not the go to guy.

We will have to give to get but I agree with your list....the other two notables who could develop very nicely with another year or two under their belt is Winchester and Polak.

This biggest disappointment for me in this too short of a playoff round was Oshie. This kid was parallel to the ice most of the time the last month and I had him penciled in for at least 2 monsta hits and 1 eye popping goal. This kid is known as a big game type so I'm still wondering if he was hurt or not. I hope he's not one who cranks it out during the season and then goes AWOL in the big games during the playoffs. He's a rook so time will tell on that.

PerOWNED is gonna be huge. He makes them "Oh chit" passes that goalies and D men hate. I've seen a couple times he made a pass and the other Blue wasn't even ready for it, wasn't even dreamin Poutine would toss them the biscuit when he did. AMAC is about the only guy who can handle his threadin of the needle.

DP also have a secret weapon, the mega blast which can lift him off his feet when fired.

I saw the Hawks come back Thurs nite and ALMOST win their opener in Vancouver......and from the boxscore on their game last nite seems they have found a seam in Luongo's game....if so you can turn out the lites on the Canucks!
Hope the Blues are watchin them bring the puck up...no problem there....

Two great games......the Wings pretty much sucked out as usual for their winning goal. I hate that forking team.
The Canes pulled it off.....but luck wadn't a part of it...the OT was friggen crazy with scores of uncalled penalties....ain't nuthin better 'n game 7 hockey like that.

Pronger to Philly... Sad day for any Blues fan that wanted to win a cup in the next few years... But hey we got Tkachuk back... Woo Hoo!! Here we go again, another sniff at success, only to fall a bit short... This must be what it feels like to be a Cubs fan...

Bro - let the Pronger obsession go....I had to. I quit on the Blues when they let him go, and I agree that he is a franchise player.....but he ain't here anymore, and we've moved on. My guess is that the crop of defensemen we've got moving along will make us forget Pronger.

On the flip side......Philly just got in Pittsburg's head....damn nice move for the city of brotherly love.

I'm over Pronger, at least in the sense that it has/had to be Pronger. I just think this team is one veteran, all-star caliber player away from real success. I'm talking about a Lidstrom, Pronger, Rafalski, etc...

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm fully aware that these guys don't grow on trees and you either have to bring them up through your organization or give up real value for them. I think we have at least 2-3 real shots at internally developing one with Johnson and Polak (maybe Pietrangelo but too early to get a read on him). But look at the natural progression on all-star defensemen and you almost alwasy see them being mentored by an veteran all-star defenseman. Other than Al MacInnis helping from the office, those kids need the real deal to show them the ropes and we need the real deal to get to the next level. Johnson and the others are at least 5 years away from Norris discussions...

Watch out for Philly next year. They had a good team this year and were expecting to make it to the finals. I think this move gives them a great chance. Unless we make a blockbuster deal, I think we're going to make the playoffs again but we're still 2-3 years from the Cup...

I can wait, be patient and deal with them staying the course....

Me too.
Regarding the Pronger deal....if I thought we were just one guy like him away from a Cup title series I woulda been for it.
As it is...I think we will need the impact player at some point, just not now.

Oshie gone... Good move by Armstrong. Got an equal caliber player, a goalie prospect, a draft pick and freed up $500K of cap space. Not to mention getting rid of a chemistry problem. You can't have a player bucking the coach openly and expect to have synergy and success. Perhaps we could have tolerated it if the dude lived up to his end of the deal...

Next move? Rest assured there are more to come...
