2014 Cardinals...........
      #243442 - 03/26/14 04:35 PM

............dam they look good.

And once again, one of the top values in the major leagues.

Jay looks to be riding the pine.

More speed than we've seen in a while.

Stronger up the middle.

Pitching staff with problems where to fit all the talent.

That's all great on paper for sure but this team needs to do it on the field.

I look for Milwaukee to be the division sleeper but the Cards should take it fo sho.

I went to the game in Jupiter Sunday. Bombs hit by Holiday, Adams, and Peralta. That was fun! And Kelly pitched 5 hitless innings. The starting line-up was close to what we'll see opening day, I hope. Jay started in CF and I hope that goes to Bourjos, until he proves he doesn't belong there full time. He's substantially better defensively and has shown he can get on base, when he gets the chance to play. He sort of got Wally Pipp'd, in Anaheim, when Mike Trout came on the scene. Jay is not the answer for any MLB team in CF. If Craig, Adams and Carpenter hit like they have show thay can, this team will score plenty of runs. Holiday and Molina are not a concern, other than staying healthy...

Pitching is always going to be the huge question mark. Some of these young arms have very short track records and need to show they belong and can stay healthy for a whole season. Hopefully, Garcia can get better and have a few good outings ... so they can trade him!!

Cards should win the Division and we should see another playoff year.

Go Cards!!

good lord, i thought we had landed at a nursing home with an airfield..

anyway, there were a crap ton of people flying in with cardinal gear on. i guess it was a popular spot to fly in to and then drive across the state to watch some ball??

then again, maybe old people like to fly to florida with cardinals jerseys on??

I had some bidness in Miami on Tuesday and the wife had her spring break last week (she's a teacher). We flew into Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday and stayed up in Palm Beach Gardens for a few days, then went south, back to Ft. Lauderdale so she could lay on the beach while I went down to Miami (actually Florida City) for some work stuff. We came back Wednesday evening.

I really am not a huge fan of spring training but we were going to be there anyway and I was pretty sure we would see some good ball for 5 or 6 innings anyway. By the 7th, most of the starters were out and the scrubs started coming in...

I had no idea there was even an airport in Punta Gorda. Must be the infamous Allegiant Air. They go to some odd places...

When was the last time the Cardinals had a short stop with 4 HR's by July 1st nevertheless April 15th?

Not many weak spots in this line up right now.

Is this just another spurt of wins to be followed by a week of slumping baseball?

Cards have had their moments on both sides all season. All star break is at 96 games and then it's the dog days.....I know we are hangin in there but some troubles remain....Rosie barely squeaking thru the ninth, Matheney's blind faith in him, Garcia out for the year, Craig in a season long slump, Bourjas not up to our hopes, the bench remains pretty weak and Matt Adams can't carry the club all year.

I dunno, too streaky to tell just yet. While we've heated up in August the last few years, I believe they'll have to dig and grind and catch some breaks if they want to get to the post season, where anything can happen.

We can worry about baseball when the World Cup is over. Or for griffin, when the bike races and hide-n-go-seek championships conclude...

They are only 2 out of first place with a weak performance in the 1st half. Milwaukee will come down to earth and the Pirates are showing they are no better than a .500 team. Cincinnati has bigger injury issues than we do. This is not a great team and the injury to Molina is significant but they can still win this Division.

Mo needs to bolster the bench and find a starter that doesn't require giving up the farm. No small tasks to accomplish...

Go Germany!!

Cards acquire Justin Masterson from the Indians. I guess this is a rent-a-pitcher deal. He already turned down a big offer from Cleveland. He is 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA and went on the 15 day DL July 8th. Apparently, he hasn't been reactivated from that yet.

They gave up a minor leaguer, James Ramsey. I hope he was a loooong shot to make it to the bigs, because it sure looks like Masterson is a loooong shot to be a huge success for us.

I guess that means we're not getting Price from Tampa or Lester from Boston...

James Ramsey per PD

Ramsey, 24, was a first-round draft pick (23rd overall) out of Florida State in 2012. Ramsey, a lefthanded hitter, was batting .300 at Springfield with a .389 on-base percentage, .916 OPS, 13 homers and 36 RBIs.

Masterson is on the DL but scheduled to come off the DL on Friday and start Saturday--

his record is pretty ho hum but I guess right now they need someone to throw out there and eat some innings

I'm waiting for the proverbial quote from the Cardinals about this being low hanging fruit or part of keeping the powder dry.

From what I heard of Ramsey you hate to lose him. I think a few things that came into play on this was A) his name isn't Tavaras and B) as an outfielder he was going to have a hard time getting up here with all the other guys we have in line trying to stay here.

I hope it works. Heard the same thing you said about how durable a guy Masterson is and though he's off this year he was "on" pretty good LAST year.

I was half relieved to hear it was this deal instead of some of the other potential rumored blockbuster moves involving us tradingg Tavaras or Shelby or both for the overpriced past-their-prime "stars" on the market.

You maybe right

OF James Ramsey

Age • 24

Preseason organizational rank • 10

Current organizational rank • 6

Current level • Class AA Springfield

2014 stats • 65 games, 236 AB, 71 H, 45 R, 13 HR, 34 RBIs, .301 AVG, .385 OBP, .525 SLG

2013 stats (Three levels) • 112 games, 411 AB, 109 H, 78 R, 16 HR, 51 RBI, .265 AVG, .373 OBP, .440 SLG

The Cardinals were expecting a lot of average and a sprinkling of power when they drafted Ramsey in the first round out of Florida State in 2012. But after tearing up High-A for three weeks, Ramsey pulled a one-eighty at Springfield in 2013. He clubbed 15 home runs, but hit just .251.

This year Ramsey combined the two. He started the season on an power surge, and although mid-season nicks and knacks (shoulder sprain, strained oblique) dulled his summer power, 13 home runs still compliment a .301 average.

A hard-nosed defender (shoulder sprain came from a collision with an outfield wall) with above-average speed, this season has seen Ramsey develop into a complete package.

10 Cards prospects on the way up or on the way out

Hate to see Craig go. He is having a down year. The whole team is. You could buy a shotgun from John Mabry........and still couldn't hit Chit with it.

Since he became the top hitting coach, Cardinal average dropped a few points and 20+ points in slugging average. This year the team average is down 20 points and slugging another 30+. Get rid of Mabry and get someone who can help the hitters get out of their funk. He didn't learn much in his playing career. Had less than 1000 hits in 14 years with less than 100 HR's and a career .260 hitter. He had a couple good early years and fell to chit. Its like hiring a McDonald's lettuce washer to run a 5 star restaurant. Cardinals can afford better and deserve better. Our players deserve better.

If it weren't for the injuries to Wacha and Garcia the Cardinals would not be doing these trades for pitching, they would be doing trades for hitters.

No doubt dog the offense has been waaaay down. Even worse with risp, I bet. But c'mon....20 points down on the friggen hitting coaches back?

Alan Craig has lost his bat speed. He looks like a cork screw at the plate. He's in a season long slump. He's 30 years old. He's got 25 mil left on his contract. Matheney kept putting him out there nite after nite. We have the long awaited Tavaras in place.

Add it all up and it's hard to blame Mo for shipping him out. Me I think Boston is taking a big gamble but they could give two chits about money.

Personally I hate to lose Kelly of the two.

People think Boston won this deal only time will tell but for the here and now Mo had to do something because it's been the same mojo the whole season and the season is about to be determined.

Craig is likely done, damaged goods. Look at other players with feet problems and how their numbers plummet, if they can't get back to 100%. Even the great Albert struggled when his feet weren't right. David Freese has feet issues and has never been consistent with the bad wheels. Ryan Howard has been a shell of himself, since he blew out his Achilles. Unloading that contract was brilliant. Mo found one of the few teams that can play around and take a $25 mil gamble on a guy like Craig.

Kelly is a #3 or #4 starter at best. Hated to see him go but he is a small price to pay for John Lackey the rest of this year and all of next year for $500K. Anyone remember him in the playoffs and particularly the WS? If we're trying to make a run, you want this dude. If you're re-tooling, not so much...

Overall, both teams have the chance to benefit from this trade. Short term, I think the Cards are the winners.

So I stay up last night just to watch Matheney bring in Rosie for the 4th time in five nights only to load the bases and lose the game? I want my hour of sleep back.

We have enough issues as is without over rating and over utilizing our closer, particularly considering his "record" at home. Rosie is good, but he is not "automatic". This was another bad move by Matheney imo. So we remain 1 back.

We are getting down to it. We can't score runs. These games are huge from here on in. If we are going to win with pitching then USE THEM WISELY.

Here is a stat for you LS...........

Rosenthal has thrown 53 1/3 innings, faced 233 batters and thrown 959 pitches. Maness has 56 1/3 IP, 232 BF, in 151 fewer pitches.

Maness tends to get put in when the situation favors his right arm and often gets taken out when a lefty comes up and a specialist like Choate is used. As a result, he is going to be more efficient with pitches. Once Rosenthal is put in, it is usually for the duration, good or bad. As a result, he's going to be facing far more batters that don't necessarily favor his arm or style. Naturally, it is going to take more pitches to get the job done (or to blow it).

I am still on the Matheny bandwagon but he frustrates me like LaRussa did at times. Stop trying to be the smartest guy in the room and just do what needs to be done. For starters, quit using Rosenthal more than 3 days in a row. It has cost us at least 3 or 4 times this season. Second, quit using Rosenthal when we don't have the lead. Same thing. Put the ego and "he deserves the opportunity" crap aside and make the moves that will win the game. Fork your players feelings and trying to be the "players manager". This is the big leagues and it is about one thing and one thing only, WINNING!!

If Mark Ellis steps up to the plate, there had better be no other option. He has been the biggest bust ever. Eat the contract, let him go and bring up a minor leaguer with a little pop. We have zero pop off the bench.

Your comments about Manes have some merit but does not explain anywhere near the differential.

The differential is that Rosie, who does lead the league in saves, can't get through an inning without putting people on, particularly at home. Lots of drama.

Last year was lights out.

This year it's dim the lights, lights on, and then, hopefully....lights out.

And as we agree, this is not the M-O to put him out there night after night as if it doesn't matter.

Bradford out with a knee injury in first quarter . . . . Fisher said to be in tears.

And we coulda had Manziel? Bradford would've never given the effort he gave to get to the end zone in that last TD.

Ah hell.
