Hey fellas,
The boss is talking about us taking on his plane to hunt Reelfoot ducks for a couple of days. I have read about the lake for years, but really didn't expect to hunt some ducks on it. Subsequently I don't know squat about it.
I will research this, but thought I would first see if any of you fellers have had any experience (recent or otherwise).
Any legit advise would be appreciated; the rest will be tolerated....

I know a guy who hunts Reelfoot yearly. I'd share his name or all the knowledge he told me about the place, but that would be considered internet scouting.

My advice would be not to try to use a plane to hunt ducks...

I think I agree with that advice!
That's OK. My boss's brother has been going down there for years so we aren't at a loss for Reel Foot information. We'll stop in Louisville and pick him up on the way there.
Just mistakenly thought there might be someone here with some experience to share...

I suggest you get a map of the US before you leave from Nebraska . Louisville isn't on the way there from Nebraska to Reelfoot. Its slightly out of the way.......just slightly.

If a man has the resources to fly a plane from Nebraska to Tennessee, for a duck hunt, surely he can afford to pay a guide for a day or two to figure things out. To fly-in blind and hope to figure it out as you go is not a formula for success. If he is going to spend a week there and has the luxury of watching the forecast to pick his dates, no problem. But most guys like that are too busy to carve out the time needed to figure it out on your own. And I'm guessing the dates are set because calendars had to be cleared and appointments worked around...
Tell him to hit google and find a guide that can make the expense of flying the plane, hotels, tags and food worthwhile...

Dude - we had three battleships (jon boats) on a crappie fishing expedition back in the 90's on Reelfoot. Each battleship was manned by two sailors (fihsermen) and equipped with a 4ft. long, 3 inch diameter Cannon (potato gun) with an 8 in diameter X 10 inch aerosol propellent chamber and electric igniter.
I've been in "shots fired" situations at work that never scared me as bad as that day on the water.
After a few beers that eveing the battle commenced into a ground offensive......the sign was merely a casualty of war.

Got few bachelor party / potato gun stories that ended well but could have ended very badly. It seems nobody ever really thinks about what might happen if they actually hit their target squarely...
I would love to know how many FPS those potatoes go when launched. I'm guessing it is over 300 FPS, probably more...

Fork a tater gun...I'm from the river....worked for a welder....took 5 sizes of steel pipe and welded them all inside of each other.....smallest diameter just bigger than a window weight. 1/2 pound of black powder will launch a window weight cut in half damn near a half mile!

Yall aint lived till you played ball with roman candles. Pitcher, catcher, and a hitter. No need for field players except for carrying first aid supplies.

If you crowd the plate, the pitcher throws one at your face also. It''s even worse when the brush back pitch hits and burns your facial hair 3 days before your wedding and pictures. It's not you can charge the mound either. Dude still has 8 shots left.

Dog, if ya gots a private jet at one's disposal, Louisville IS on the way! LOL!!
We're set to hunt 12/15-16 at Reel Foot. Ought to be a fun experience. Maybe even see some birds...

Well, then here's a second thought......if a man has a private jet at his disposal, why the fork ask a bunch of heathen bastards here where to hunt. IF a man can afford a private jet, he can afford to buy whatever he needs for a hunt.
just saying.

Well, it was a hunting trip for the books, fellas.
We hooked up with a guide from the net, and he arranged two days of guided hunting on Reelfoot.
Tuesday we went out with a guide and two helpers. The six of us shot 29 ducks, 21 mallets, the rest gaddies. Yesterday 5 of us shot just 10, 8 of which were mallets.
I've not hunted as many as some on here, but I have to say the hunting was unlike anywhere else. The cypress timber around and in the lake was unique. The ducks flew at stratospheric heights, sailing in off the river or from the MO boot hill. Gullets were full of rice...
The calling was the most impressive I have ever witnessed. Flocks from 400 yards or higher would often respond to the highballing calls, that literally made my ears ring it was incredibly loud! But dammed if it didn't work!!! Those hands called as loudly as their lungs would allow. Nearly non-stop sometimes for 2-3 minutes, until the birds circled into range.
It was one heck of a good time. Great calling, comfortable mega-blinds and setups, hot-cooked grub in the blind, fine dog work from a Lab pup, Quake, just 9-months old.
It took 1hr. 32 min. to get there, and 1 hr. 50 min. to get home. Talk about getting spoiled! Boss picked up the tab for guides and rooms, plus the travel as a Christmas present to his son and I. We picked up the guide tips, meals, ammo, etc. I'll never forget the experience and his generosity.
In addition, I found some worthwhile comments from the TN Refuge website posters. I guess I thought the Duck Gods on here would have had more to share about Reelfoot.
I'll get around to posting some pics of the trip shortly.
