Our new flock started laying a couple weeks ago. We're about thirty eggs a week from 5 hens. Nothing better than fresh eggs with some country ham or home made sausage.

Thanks.
Something (I think it was a possum) killed a couple of them recently, so I've been setting a trap each night after I lock them up. Nothing yet, but I'll keep trying.

I actually tried that last year. I put what was left of a chicken carcass in the trap as bait, and all I got was a smelly trap. I had to pick bones 'n feathers out of there to use it again, after giving it time to rot away.

I put my game cam in the run, pointing at the coop door, to see if anything came through. When I checked the pics yesterday, I saw that a coon and a possum had gone in the night before. (That explains why so much feed is gone lately).
I set the trap just inside the coop last night, so that anything trying to go in would walk into the trap. It worked, and I'll be giving him a .22lr later today.

It opens into the run, and I leave it open all the time so they can go from coop to run as they please. I like doing it this way, even though it puts them at risk.

Last week I got six more laying hens, and my rooster was happy to see them.
We also finished a goat pen;
...and got a couple young dwarf goats.

I had a very clear vision of it in my head, before starting, but as I go along the results look... different.

The run is all free-standing; not an actual building or nuthin' like that.

Wire is up all around the perimeter. I still need to make/mount a second gate, put wire over the top (with help from family), and secure the bottom edge all the way around. I may be slow, and not very good, but it'll work.

Gate is done, but I still need to get the wire put over the top.
There's a local mouse-hunter hanging around, and it may decide to go for a bigger meal.

A few people came over today, and got the entire top of the run covered. There are still some spots that need to be finished (small gaps where sheet metal meets welded wire), but I can lock up my chickens again.
