......lose Reyes for the year?
Man this team is jinxed. Waino, Lynn, now the most promising pitcher in a long long time out for the forking season, if rumors are true.

What's up with all the talk on how much Molina is going to play?
They gonna sit Carson Kelley if he's ready?
Did Molina sit when he was ready all those years ago?
If Kelly is anywhere near the player they say he is, I'd like to see him play 50-60 games this year. It'd be good for Yadi's game too.
But I'm thinking fat chance.

It sounds to me like the only way Kelly plays in the big leagues this year is if there is an injury or he is part of the Sept call-ups. I was under the impression he is not quite ready for the big show and they signed Fryer as the back-up (a solid back-up, by the way). Then again, I can't quite figure out what is going on. Hopefully, he's ready to play and can learn from Yadi. 50-60 games would be ideal to keep Molina fresh (and get Kelly the experience he needs in the bigs) but they've been saying chit like that for the last 2-3 years and he still plays 130-140+ games a year. And do you really want Kelly sitting on the bench for 120+ games? Wouldn't it be better for his development to be playing every day in Memphis?
They say he's one of the the best catching prospects in the entire MLB. I hope he pans out. Yadi can't have much left in the tank, unless they move him to first base to finish his career...

I'm happy Jason Heyward has found his swing this offseason. Batting .087 so far. Hella of pickup by the cubs.

Would love to see that particular cub repeat.
Nothing against JHey, but fork him he chose them, and fork the cubs too.
Seems like the Cards pitching is all in order and purring along. Wacha, Lynn and Waino 'sposedly lights out. It's the perfect set up for a let down.

I don't know, but he has a couple of weeks to determine his future.
If he does make it, you can almost guarantee he'll be on the dl for something before June. I like him but he's what 29 now and has he ever stayed healthy for a season?

Phambino was hitting .174 up until his 2 for 4 day yesterday

I'll take Jose Martinez over Phambino, but Tommy makes the team to keep a 5th outfielder on the squad.....but just barely. He will break a nail or sprain his eyebrow by May 15th, missing the rest of the season until after the All-Star break.
Cards win the division by 5 1/2 games. Cubs out of contention by June 17th. Lackey is in anger management by Mid May. Heyward is back in Des Moines shagging balls and working on his swing by June 1st. Lester goes on the DL come June with an oblique strain. Arrieta, as much as I like the guy will have season ending Tommy John surgery at the AS break, which will allow him to be at home with his smoking hot wife.

I changed my damn mind too. Phambino will be at Memphis to start the season. His ass gets cut to work on his health until someone gets hurt. I wish Gyorko would get the starting job over Johnny Roids Peralta. We should have traded Johnny P in the offseason given the chance.
Royals barely break .500 also and finish in 3rd in the AL Central also. I would post that in the Royals thread, but the interest in the ball club jumped off the bandwagon last season at the AS Break.

Cards will prolly go with extra pitching as a part of their early season roster.
What the hell they doing with Adams? I'd go Gyorko too over Johnny. Particularly in the dog days when Johnny can barely make it to the plate. bwaaaaaaaa
While I'm at it we'll see but I'm about done with Matheney. The guy puts me to sleep, he's way to veteran orientated and his samo samo song and dance needs to go.

Phambino heading down to AAA. Kolton Wong better lose the attitude or his ass will be gone also. I'd rather see Jedd Geryko getting daily playing time than Wong.
STL and Molina should just excercise the 2018 option right now and work on a new contract as they find time. Pay the man what he is worth. He still has 3-4 more good years left.

If they're gonna sign him the sooner the better. Offer should up him this year and get it included in the new extended deal making it more attractive.
Thing about Yadi is his value to the staff on top of a potential HOF talent. Take the chance and get it done.

No way Molina accepts it, if the Cards offer it (I'm guessing they already have). He's going to want a 3-4 year deal, if he signs anything.
I love Molina and think he has been the glue, holding this team together for the last 10+ years. But the Cards need to stick to their playbook and not overpay aging veterans. It has made the New England Patriots the best sports franchise in the world. It has been shown time after time that paying aging veterans rarely pays off. And it is especially crippling for mid-market teams like the Cards.
I have to agree with LS, Matheny is not likely to take this or any team to the promised land. He has not been a quick study when it comes to learning how to be a big league manager and how to win with an above average roster. Excluding last year, this team has had the horses to win it all, every year he's had this team. And one could argue that they could have and should have at least made the playoffs last year, had he better prepared them to play a little defense and run the bases at a high school level or higher...

Kelly isn't ready for the big show. Keep Molina around for 3-4 years. He can play 1st base his last year or 2 if needed and could help mentor Kelly
It's not like you are teaching Matt Holliday to play 1st base. Make him a Cardinal for life. His defensive stats are still well above the rest of the league.

Every one from the Molina camp is saying Cards better pay to stay or he's gone.
If the Cards want him they need to renegotiate and include this year into a new 4 year offer my guess is it starts at 80 mil.
I think Yadi has 2 strong years left and maybe a 3rd as a 100 game starter. If he wasn't a catcher I wouldn't do it but this guy has to be the best game manager in all of baseball.
Funny to think about the Pats comparison because in SOME ways Molina and Brady should be a part of that comparison too.
The worst part of all this is Kelly, the #1 catching prospect, being held back. Maybe it's Kelley to first next year isn't he a converted catcher anyway?

I don't expect to see Carp make a mental mistake like that again AND he gets a pass being new to first.
This thing with Wong's head is already old. If he can hit the baseball, he will play. If he can't he's got to deal with that himself and not be a team distraction. Matheney needs to lay it out and make the situation clear I think he's trying to do that.

Wong has headworms and a dolt like Matheny doesn't have a clue how to deal with it/him. Either Wong gets a shot, succeeds and maintains it or the Cards have to find a place for him that is not on the active MLB roster. He has the talent but has scrambled-brain between the ears. Hard to imagine him drawings much interest on the trade market. Between the salary and his known mental issues, what would anyone give for him? At best they get a late-round draft pick and have to eat some of his salary.
Peralta will be replaced as the #4 hitter by Girchuk or Piscotty by end of May. Highly unlikely he stays in the #4 slot for long.
It is total BS that a pitcher can blow a save and get a win. Someone needs to call MLB and have that idiotic deal changed.

wong would have started the game if the cubs had started a right-handed pitcher..
it's not that hard to figure out
and gyorko ain't the one blocking wong from playing everyday.. it's peralta
I imagine they're giving peralta every chance to prove he's worth starting. it's hard to sit 10 million dollars on the bench. Once he doesn't, he's gone!

Cubs fans are too busy telling everyone they won the 2016 World Series and buying gear to care about 2017 baseball. Just like the 2015 Royals. Cry Baby Madden is a genius, Heyward is coming around, and STL fans are all delusional assholes, who should be worried because their team didn't make the playoffs for the first time in 6 seasons. Bartman can finally come out of hiding and people can stop buying goats on the North Side of Shitcago.......and all over America. I thought the Royals had some bandwagon folks. I've never seen so much new Flubs gear in the airports or around the country in bars and restaurants. Who knew there were so many losers in America.
Speacking of the Royals.......Hell we don't even have a 2017 Royals thread on opening day, which goes to show the level of excitement from the bandwagon bunch. I guess the offseason pickups of Brandon, I'll hit 20 HR but bat .210 while striking out 150 times, and Seth Maness didn't excite the west siders. Probably trying to figure out how the Chiefs took another early round exit in the playoffs. Maybe a win today in Minnesoooooota will get some excitement in this dump.

I thought Wong was blocking Wong.
We have a chance to be pretty good up the middle. Signed Yadi, picked up Fowler, Diaz playing better in second half of last year..... next thing I know is Wong having a tantrum about not facing lefties or not being told about it.
If he hits lefties, he can face them. And for once in a Blue moon Sportsmn is right, Matheney needs to explain as he goes.......... he can't treat his players like he does the fans.

let's say you've got two spots on the infield to fill on any given day. who are you going to pick from the following:
wong, gyorko, peralta?
me personally, I'm going with wong & gyorko. I've never been impressed with peralta. Yeah, he can hit the long ball now & then, but his range on the field sucks and that's why he's at third now.
thankfully we don't get all the inner city, tabloid horse chit sports newspaper articles y'all get up there, so our views down here are not as skewed or swayed as yours..
it's nice to be able to watch a game on teevee (with the mute on) and then go to bed, with my own opinion of how the game was played without all the "expert" drama being interjected while I watch... Geeze, it didn't take my kids this long to figure it out. but at least you finally did. Better late than never.
Try this on: Peralta, Wong and Gyorko are all mediocre players and interchangeable. Play the one that is hot and sit the one that is not... Pretty simple. Of course Wong has the most talent and could easily be a "star" in this league. But what good is that when he can't make it through a day without some sort of drama about his situation. Someone needs to tell him to STFU and just play. Is George Hendrick around to coach him on media relations?

By "good up the middle", that has to include D.
So right there, Wong has the best upside now whether he can actually reach his potential is another thing.
I prefer Wong at 2nd and Gyorko at third but the guy has to be competent against lefties.
Peralta can get hot and help this team too but that 4 hole for him is a death move imo.
Looks like they will get the game in tonight. Lots of talk from Waino this Spring, time to deliver.

Fowler Diaz Carpenter Grichuck Gyorko Molina Piscotty Wong Pitcher
Carp and Grichuck could be switched. Carp is a doubles hitting machine. That's just as good for clearing the bases he hits to the alley with power and drives the ball to ge wall. Plenty of depth to score a guy from first, with the speed assess of him. Randall has shown flashes of power. The late season AAA trip seemed to help him out. When he is seeing the ball, he is very good at crushing a ball. Molina, Gyorko, and Piscotty move up or down depending on how hot they are. Molina strikes out the least, but Jed has the best power so I put him in the 5 hole. From top to bottom it's a really balanced lineup with good power throughout and people who can hit for an average with above average speed. Not a bunch of 30 HR guys but I'll take 6 of them hitting 20+ this year.

Tornader hit my home town last evening.
Thank God no one was seriously hurt or killed.
No damage at my place. We live 5 miles east of town out in the country, but my wife & two of my young'ins were just about caught in it while driving. She didn't have any notice of it. My oldest & myself were driving back from his canceled ballgame in Joplin. We pulled off in Neosho and took shelter in the high school. You might be the manliest of men, but it'll shake your core when you're separated from your loved ones in a moment like that. Once the twister hit, power was out for 10 miles, cell signals were next to zero. Crap is happening too often down here.. I got a life's worth of the reality from Joplin. Don't want no more of it for myself or anyone else.

Glad MM worked so hard to improve their defense this year. Hard to imagine playing any worse than last year but they have managed to be even worse defensively than last year and I didn't think that was possible. Beyond the errors on the score sheet (3 yesterday alone!!), this team is still so fundamentally poor it is embarrassing. I really can't see how they can keep MM for the entire season if this doesn't get cleaned-up and improve. How does a big-league player not what base to throw to? How does a MLB team justify putting players in positions they are clearly not capable of playing? This has turned into some sort of circus act. "Come one, come all; see the infielder play outfield and watch what happens..."
Just like last year, these games are really hard to watch...

Matt Adams to the outfield.
My god, I am considering pulling a griffin and tell ya'll I'm not watching any more.
How many forkin games did this team lose because of defense last year??
I love Matt Adams. Can't even recognize him for all the work he has done to change his physique. But not in the outfield, not on ANY regular basis. Listening to Matheney on MLB network explain this " experiment " was akin to having my teeth pulled.
Hell if this keeps up put Adams on first and Matt back to third and put Martinez in the outfield........but GET THE BEST DEFENSE YOU CAN out on the field.
Jesus Christ Lord Almighty gimme a a bottle of ambien!! !!

Last night 14-6
Sloppy play and a bullpen meltdown
2-5 for the season
I think I've been here before
At this rate, Mac might be right but then the Royals are 2-5 also and they have an even worse bullpen.

What the hell is the matter with you people? Have you not been paying attention to Nostradawgus?
"Cards win the division by 5 1/2 games. Cubs out of contention by June 17th. Lackey is in anger management by Mid May. Heyward is back in Des Moines shagging balls and working on his swing by June 1st. Lester goes on the DL come June with an oblique strain. Arrieta, as much as I like the guy will have season ending Tommy John surgery at the AS break, which will allow him to be at home with his smoking hot wife."
Have a little faith folks - Dawg has spoken!
And now the waiting begins on the reply that will include more about the Royals than the Cards..

True dat DjF!!
Disappointing pitching this early in the season happens frequently. It doesn't make any game played any less important. Royals are either gonna get lucky with better pitching or we'll stink. I think we got the bats and defense to hang in there otherwise.
Matheny can coach but then at times you'd think mebbe not. I still back him to do well...Cards will do the same...

Griffin, I was merely commenting on the diehard Redbird fans who apparently are jumping off the red wagon already. I was chastising them for such and quoted Nostra-dawg-us who has the Cardinals winning the division going away? As he is always right, how can they be questioning things?? And I said nothing about the 'Birds'...

I correctly said the cards would make the playoffs in August in 2011, when everyone wrote them off. Not all my cubs predictions can come true, it a Cards fan can wish.
I would beat down the Royals on your own thread.......but apparently the lack of enthusiasm didn't even merit a thread prior to the season. Hell.......an eastsidee had to help out the wheels on the bandwagon bus to get it started.
Cards still win by 5 1/2. Royals finish below .500. The time to release Broxton was mid way through LAST season. Adams needs to be traded to get something for what little value he does have at this moment. Someone should go dig up Dave Duncan, and bring him back for the season. Lilliquist needs to go. He is 3 years past his scheduled departure

I realized when I typed that, there would be some geographical challenges bastard who hasn't seen a map of the MO river, so I'll add one for you LS. Furthermore, the damn river starts Montana and ends up in DTL, hence tuning N to S and eventually W to E
From my house If I try to throw a rock across the Mighty MO, I'm throwing that rock WEST, not north or south
The same with the majority of the westsiders. They might be south of the river, but it's still the western river bank they have to look at.

I thought Dawg was an Okie. Most folks use Columbia as the line of demarcation for eastside/westside. Those living in Columbia are neither eastsider nor westsider. Kind of a transgender type of thing which I'm sure the capital city of the MoMo Snowflake population is probably full of as well. Cards sure took a beating last night. Royals were saved byu the fact they didn't play.

Grew up on Cardinals baseball and still follow them today Dan'l. Moved to KC in 86 and followed the local team as well. Only time I need to pick is when they play each other and then I pull for the Birds. Now go back to not hunting or fishing and keep doing whatever you do..

Maybe Fowler found his swing again. Sweep of the lowly Pirates Crawling back up the standings. 145+ games to play so no need to push the panic button. We can ship off Adams any time though. Maybe we can get a used condom, a stale beer, and a half full bottle of Bill Cosby's old pill for Braxton also. That's dudes worthless. He has been that way for years.

It's also time to put Carp back at 3rd. Give Martinez some more playing time with his hot bat and put him at first. Leave the outfield alone with a Fowler, Piscotty, and Grichuck. ....... and Adams out of it without a doubt.
Ship out Jonny P also. Wong and Gyrko can split 2nd base.

Again I am amazed at how brain dead this team is
Base running mistakes, errors--Mathenius the Genius managment Some how Wong has emerged as the biggest knucklehead of a team full of knuckleheads-- that 5 year deal for $22.5 million looks like the kiss of death right now.
I don't know how many times I can stand watching Wong hit into a 4-6-3 double play with men in scoring position.
If he doesn't watch it we might trade him to the Royals and really rat fork them

Bottom 11 Wong triples- Cards load bases Carpenter hits grand salami
This was after leaving 9 runners on during the game and Wong getting picked off 2nd on missed bunt play

The dumb twin and I were at the ballpark today......that team would be harder to watch than the Blues but they have a certain kind of "three stooges" charm so it's kind of fun to watch them boot the ball, screw up base running, throw to the wrong man, and on and on.
I was toast after 10 but she talked me into "one more inning, PLEASE"......she got it right.
Good times.

Fielding and fundamentals are still sub-par but they're hitting the snot out of the ball, so it isn't costing them games. Watching Wong F up a potential 2-3-6 (tag) double play, last night, just leaves you wondering how this clown played college level and now pro ball. He is really a head case.
Not much chance this team stays ahead of the Cubs for long but fun while it lasts. Hopefully the bats stay hot.

Fork the Cubs. Quit drinking the Kool-Aid from ESPN. The Cards are just as hot as any team in baseball. The last 2-3 weeks have been good. Chicago is flat right now. Cards need to get better defensively, without a doubt. Sierra is going to be a good player when they decide to promote him full time. As long as we have a couple players staying hot with the bat, and it seems to switch every week or so, we will be fine. Right now, that's Wong and Phambino. Wong can be a head case in the field as long as he goes 2-3 or 3-4 on the night.
Carp and Diaz are starting to get into their form........and Gyorko needs to be in the lineup nightly. Johnny P can just ride the pine with Adams. The problem is Mathemy will over think chit and sit the hot guys, thinking he can mix it up, and create more magic.
Perhaps we could get Oquendo to trade in his suit for a uniform until the AS break. That might help out our defense.

Crying Joe, is a biatch. Always has been one. Cried about the slides. Cried about the white backdrop at Busch, with Cards batting .........and LITERALLY the next home stand at Wrigley, a white sign behind home plate with the Cubs at bat. Cried about them being tired, like this play more away games than anyone else. They play 5 more games at home this month. He cried about stick-em on Molina's chest protestor. He is a beardedtaco.
Now suddenly everyone is hurt and that's an issue. Kinda like the Redbirds a couple years ago when everyone go hurt and someone called up from AAA filled in and we kept winning. I guess Shitcago wasn't ass deep as they thought.

Bullpen, that's one thing........but the errors and blunders on the base paths? My my. Hard to watch.
Wishing Matt Adams the best but he hasn't been the same since injured some 2 years ago. I think he can help the Braves and who knows on the kid we got.
Love Mo's "make room for Johnny P" comment. Good Lard. And that's not a typo.

Maybe the Red Sox will make room for Peralta. Mo sent Adams To a team Desperate for a 1st baseman. Everyone knew it. So instead of getting a good deal we sent Adams, with a sack full of cash, for a Single A infielder hitting .275 at that level. Seriously. That's all we could forking get?? Was Mo drunk?? The Braves were desperate if they thought Matt Adams could fil their void at 1st, and Mo failed to take advantage of that situation.

I was pretty surprised by that too, particularly having the Braves over a barrel, supposedly.
Just his pinch hitting status alone would bring more, one would think. But the kid might be good, that's all that's left now.

If the kid was worth a damn, he wouldn't be spending his time in a ball or rookie league. You also teyouclaly don't send a proven MLB player, eating his salary also........while getting a Single A player in return. Adams Needed to go, but he was worth more than we got, especially considering we are paying the bulk of his salary.

Single A.
Hell, maybe "we'll leave the lights on" might wake this guy up.
Is there a special league for defense and base running? Half these guys need to go there.

The last few games all the talking heads were saying that this team needs 'consistency'.
They already have consistency---decent pitching,a gasoline and a match bullpen, mediocre defense, bone head base running and barely breathing offense
Very consistent from what I can see
Hard to hit the target when you are always shooting yourself in the foot

BROXTON GONE!!!!!! Finally. That's a good start. Clean up 75% of the dickheads in the bullpen.
About Grichuck........I'll quote Pete Rose. You don't change your swing, which is what I think Mayberry has done to home. Pete says your swing is what's got you to the show. You move your position in the box or choke up or slide down over h knob. You don't change your swing. Seeing Randall went to the minors last year and got his issue worked out for the late season run........I think the problem is with the hitting g coaching at the big club. He fixed it when he left. It's screwed up again due to Mayberry
How bout we get rid of the 1st and 3rd base coach. We run into way too many out and base blunders. Fork...........get rid of the entire coaching staff, starting with Matheny

We would get some from the New Money Royals..............but they done spent all their money, traded away their prospects, signed some washed up Cardinals players, and are busy coming up with gimics to put asses in the seats.

As Albert is about to snack number 600 and is fast closing in on 3000 hits & 2000 rbi's...........with 1st base a train wreck since he left, perhaps Mo and company should have not insulted a franchise player with a lowball offer to start negotiations. A guy scoring Close to 100 Runs a year, hitting 30+ homeruns a year, and 150 hits a year would be worth having having for the money AP is getting. A 600 HR and 3000 hit and 2000 RBI guy would have been great to have
Since 2001 when AP came into the league he has 599 HR's, 608 doubles, 1855 RBI's, 491 go ahead rbi's, 294 GW rbi's........and still has a career .308 average with his off years and injuries. Shouldn't have let him go and paid the man what he was worth. Considering what Mo paid for Brett Cecil, $20,000 an inning to suck balls, AP should have gotten $60,000,000 a year. The Cecil contract is an abortion and Cecil is laughing all the way to the bank.
Hell AP has a chance to get to 2000 runs also. That would put him in the same company as Aaron as the only 2 people with 3000 hits. 600+ homers and 2000+ rbi's, & 2000+ runs............but Mo didn't want to pay the man what he was worth. Even as a declining player, his ass is STILL producing better than anyone we keep sticking at 1st.

Will Leitch, Sports on Earth: "The Cardinals are a lousy fielding team, a lousy baserunning team and a lousy … well, just a lousy fundamental team. I know that fundamentals aren't in vogue, but when you watch the Cards play every day, they are sloppy and lackadaisical and all together ugly. They lose games because of mental lapses . . . and dumb errors and odd managerial decisions. They find new ways, seemingly every night, to lose. There is talent here, particularly in that rotation. If the Cardinals could tighten up their sloppy play, they could still make a run in this division. But when's the last time you saw a team suddenly turn from this error-prone to fundamentally sound midseason? The Cards bear little resemblance to their solid, reliable teams of the past. And as talented as they are, they don't have enough talent to overcome their daily brainfarts. No team is at a more pivotal moment right now than the Cardinals. The Brewers and Reds are still building; the Pirates have a ton of young talent; the Cubs are still the Cubs. What are the Cards? What's the plan? What are they, exactly? That question is far from being answered, and until it is, this team looks like what it record says it is: Mediocre."

talent isn't the problem here. mentality and mental toughness are the problems.
a guy doesn't make it to the show and then forget how to field a ball or run the bases.
whatever term you want to put on it, they lack aggressiveness everywhere and they don't look like they're hungry to win at all costs..
maybe matheny should ditch the no cussing attitude and crawl all over some dudes?? I get the impression he's soft on the guys. yeah, they're talented, but you have to continually push them to get better and put pressure on them. if you can't drop an F bomb to get your point across or get their attention, maybe you ain't tough enough??
lots of people hated larussa's micro-managing of the game, but i'm pretty sure his players knew & felt the importance of playing the game hard and smart.
matheny is a nice guy, but sometimes a team needs a dick to run the show, especially with all of the young guys coming up..

Dang good post Haus I agree with most of it but sorry, that infield is not a defensively talented group....and they never were.
Carp has always been here for his bat. Gyrko does his best for sure, capable. Diaz is in the wrong position he's just not a ss and Wong has never shown consistency his time in the bigs.
I can buy they are better than they show. I agree there is no accountability for their sloppy play. And the base running thing? is entirely fixable yet again, no accountability for the slop.
This club misses Kissell and Jose, badly. What they demanded. And they need a manager to insist on something better as well.
And on top of all this they can't hit the baseball, and I know most have the ability to do that.
You'd think having missed the play offs by one stinking, lousy game last year, and there was a score of them to choose from, a light would go on in somebody's head. And I'd start with the manager on that one.
Our Ace is out yet here we sit with one of baseballs best rotations and we struggle to play .500. Tinkers-Evers and Chance we are not but maybe Mo needs to actually do something and put Matheney on notice, REAL NOTICE, and see if that can change things.
Kumbaya sure ain't.

So since 2011, we have tried 4-5 abortions at 1st. I guess you liked Brandon Moss for $9 million so we watch him strike out 200 times a year, hit .215 But...........BUT, hit 30 HR.
The money we pissed away on EVERY failure at 1st, the money we tried to piss away on one of the most over rated Right fielders to ever play Jason's heyward............you know, the guy with an AWESOME WAR. A joke of a Stay to say the least. Brett Cecil. Broxton. Adams. Craig. The list of pissed away money goes on and on and on.
Forgive me for wanting to oak a guy $30 million a year, who ACTUALLY is productive. A 3/4 version of Pinole is STILL 3x's the players of anyone we have tried there.
Instead we shift Carpenter around every season so he can learn a new spot, effecting his hitting. Dude has to put in extra work to learn a new position Might as well try him at catching next year so he has the entire infield. Hell............Mo and Matheny tried to convert one of the DUMBEST left fielders in baseball to 1st base. That was going to be a $17 million dollar experiment for a guy who hadn't played 1st base since the 3rd grade. The Cards aren't consistent. Every damn season we have more and more failed experiments in the field. Why not have consistency. #5 gave us that. A consistent hitter and 1st baseman. Then Matheny doesn't have to try to crest magic every night and mix up his lineup.
When I look at all the money Mo has pissed away on stupid pickups or contracts.........it makes the Pujols contract look retarded NOT to sign. You don't think he is worth he money. Great. His numbers stil show he is.

No I don't think he's worth it. And if his numbers prove otherwise then there's a lot of guys out there getting underpaid.
For starters, hasn't Pujols DH'd the last two years? He can't play regular at first base. Major foot issues I believe. So there goes that small detail.
Worth the money? The dude is going to get paid almost 50% of his YTD LIFETIME earnings over the next four years. Then, of course, is his 10 million dollar 10 year personal services contract with the Anahwho Angels.
His numbers have trended down since the day he left here.
He's a HOF'er and we had him when he was at his best, by far. He could have stayed here if he chose, he did not. Maybe more than 35k would be coming to the park to see him hit #600. Maybe baseball would take notice if he were doing it here. As it is, he went to the armpit of major league baseball for the money to play out his days. Poor Albert.
And then of course we got Wacha and Piscotty in return from Anawho for signing Albert. Not too shabby.
I got nothin against AP. I wanted him to stay. But since leaving, found out I was wrong. The fact Mo has not been able to find a way to stabilize the first base position is hardly a reason to go from pan to fire with hindsight. It just means Mo sucks from time to time.

I said pay the man what he was worth. The Cardinals shot him a low ball short term deal. When they finally came around and decided to pay a little more it was too late. Looking at his numbers and the failuresa we have has with signings, the pujols contract should have been signed long before he hit he market.

I was messing with you.
Worth is a relative term. A piece of property or house is only "worth" what someone is willing to pay for it.
Everyone and their brother wanted him to stay, but Bert thought he was "worth" more. Remember all the "legacy" talk? I know you enjoyed those comments from him.
I have zero idea how much the Cardinal organization can afford, but they apparently thought they couldn't afford him and I can't blame them. If they did sign him to a 300 million dollars deal, they'd have chit for starting pitching and then everyone would be bitchin about that.
I agree that the patchwork job they've done with filling holes is pretty brutal. You basically have a team of utility players starting every day.
They've made some bad deals for sure. It's hard to see inside the heart of another person. Dude might bust his ass for 3-4 years, then he signs the big contract and starts coasting. Speaking of, might just be me, but does anyone else think Yadi is playing exceptionally chitty (by his standards) this year? Lots of passed balls is the main thing I've seen. Coincidence he just signed his big contract??
Anyways, us bitchin about ain't going to change anything, but it sure is fun..

My memory is he was asked plenty to sign early and said NO.
He was extremely coy with wanting the open market, but it was clear leaving here was a very strong option that he wanted, unlike the other lifetime Cardinal greats who played ball with the front office and retired with bats on their jerseys.
No, Albert wanted the money, he got it, and he got the Angels too. Whats funny is with that 10 year "personal services" contract he is going to have that franchise wrapped around his neck for a long long time. Is he going into the Hall wearing that forkin halo hat? Forkin California dreamin is what he's got.

Fork AP. He and his biatch wife are money grubbing carpet baggers. Thankfully, for him this is America and he is free to to whatever he wants, within the rules of baseball and the law. Even more thankfully for him, Curt Flood took a stand all those years ago.
I love all the people who say things like, "You would have too..." or "Who wouldn't..." Bullchit!!! Tons of people, me included, have passed up opportunities to make more money and fatten bank accounts. Some people make career/life decisions based on sheer ego and greed. Others make them on goals not tied to money and fame. Things like family, community, quality of life, etc... So please don't try to tell me I am supposed to still love AP because he's just doing what anyone else would have done. That BS. I could have managed to squeak by on $215 or $220 million, rather than $230 (or whatever the obscene numbers actually were). I would have preferred he stayed at the time. In retrospect, it may have been one of the best non-signings in their history.
We got the best 11 years out of him, by far, at a steal of a price and he still made millions!! No, I don't feel sorry for him. No, I don't care for him. No, I don't want to see him succeed. No, I don't give two flyin' forks if he is miserable in that chithole of a state. Yes, I cuckle a little each time I read about how nobody cares about him hitting #600 (has he even done it yet?). Yes, I snicker when I see he's struggling... Fork him!!

ummmmmmmmm........aside from the other 250 million reasons it's good he's gone, he is a dh player, unable to play first base regularly while able to hit a baseball. In the middle of his contract.

Wrong again old man. Pujols has played 155 games a year Since being in Cali, except 2013 when he was hurt. He has played nearly 120 games at first base every one of those season, until last year, when they put him as the DH primarily. The Angels actually have another TRUE 1st baseman they can use, who bats about .280 and gives them another solid bat in their lineup. Why not put AP as the DH, when you have another younger guy to use in the field. It's first base. It's not like we asked him to shag balls on Left Field.
125 games a year from AP with his numbers is way better than watching Brandon Moss strike out 200 times and hit .215 Maybe you enjoyed watching Adams, Reynolds, Moss, and the rest think they were farmers swinging at chit in the dirt while batting.

The cards initially made an offer for a 5 year deal.........thinking they would control him through 2016 and then thinking he wouldn't leave the town or team after 16 seasons..........allowing them signing him to one final deal in 2016. They should have given him a 7 year deal with team options for years 8-10, of needed to make him happy........and bigger money For incentives and playing good in those final years. Instead they low balled him out of the gate. I would have been pissed off too
Only when other teams got involved, and it looked like we might lose him, did the Cards step up their offer. If they had no damn problems going PQ years and $200 million at the end of negotiations, why not do more on the front end of negotiations if they wanted to keep him.
I mean Gawd Dammit..........they wanted to pay Jason Heyward $25 million a year for 8 seasons. A career .260 hitter who hits 20 dingers a year.........all because he has a great WAR. MO was willing to go Full retard on The Heyward deal, but went half ass on a career .330 hitter, who is sill producing more at the plate as an old man than Heyward

H2ODOG said: Wrong again old man.

Like 120 games a year is some kind of achievement? For 25-30 mil a year?
I never said he dh'd since leaving. He dh'd last year and most all of this year. Years 5 and 6 of his contract. Those years plus his remaining years are some 160 million to sit on pine and come to the plate 4 times a game. He can't even do that much if he were here.
He's been asked and he has said himself......after back to back games at first he aches...and he's got major foot issues, if he stayed on this team your 250 million dollar player would be in the field 80 games right now tops with 115 million more to pay for in the remaining years.
He's just another AL dh guy who can't go 150 games a year, and by his own words will be aching if he does half that. Once his foot flares he's screwed for a long long time too. The Angels know this which is why he's riding pine.
The Cardinals wanted this guy. They wanted to sign early. Pujols wanted no part of that. He WANTED what he got at the time. Claiming he got dissed then wifey got all pizzed off too..........him claiming it "wasn't" about the money......oh yeah, the diss ...remember that one?...what a joke..........he can play out his days in LA and then stay out there too for all I care.

The Cards could have easily signed him to a 5-6 year deal with options like we had with holiday. You know, pay the dude $1 million to walk away instead of $18 million to stay. Pretty easy
Having Albert around for 5-7 more years for $25 million a year would have been worth it. Anything is better than the Abortion we have a not he foels now. Carp needs to be at 3rd. Gyorko needs to be at 2nd. Diaz at Second and an HONEST TO GOD first baseman should have. Even picked up the day Pujols left instead of chasing Heyward for big money. The starting pitching is decent enough and good enough to win games. Our offense is awefuk. Like late 90's pre Pujols aweful. The D is about the same. The Managing is worse.

Dawg I have zero problem with your assessment of the current Cardinal team and their shortcomings. Particularly at first base.
But this fantasy about how we could have signed him for less and how well it would have worked out for us if we signed him for anything is just wishful thinking.
First, HE WASN'T GOING TO SIGN without his shot at free agency. PERIOD. That's what he wanted, to prove his worth on the market. He was asked here 100 times about his chances of being a Cardinal and he had the same bs answer every time. Where are you getting this easy sign deal in your head? he wanted no part of that. None.
Secondly, the guy, right now, can't play first everyday. No where near it. He's played first FOUR times this year, 28 times last year. WTF would he be doing for us if he can't play the field???
And like I said, if that foot issue fires up he's on the DL for 30 days minimum and or he won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn.
There's plenty to biatch about in Cardinal land, but this ain't one of 'em.
I'm done.

Ya.......Heyward sucked ass in Atlanta before we got him on STL. He's
A career .260 guy with a greatarm........and his WAR stat. Let's not forget that. Give me a .300 hitter with a decent arm. Hell for Heyward money we can get two of those.
4 days of Pujols Production this year is about what we got from Adams also..........and we are still paying him. You hate the greedy fork.... I get it. Sportsman is under a restraining order to stay away from him. You two bastards said he wasn't worth the money. I'm pointing out to you two, rhaybhus nunbers for the last 5 seasons are better than ANYTHING we have had there. The Angels are busy protecting their investment and have someone to play first, so he DH'a. Everything I've read aid he feels good if he gets rest after playing for several days. You know like you old fork... need a nap and rest. We will never know how it all panned out in STL. We have different doctors, different trainers and surgeons. You think he would be playing oh one day a month. I'm betting he would get 130 games a year in
Either way........Mo won't bother to find a first baseman this season or this coming offseason. Matheny will still suck next year and the year after. The entire coaching staff should go. Hell.........Mo can pack his chit and go also. His offseason pickups.........Fowler and Cecil. Never mind the forking hole at 1st. We can just piece mill that chit ..........kept dead weight of Broxton and Peralta around. I bet dude wears Cubs underwear to bed and is a closet Cubs fan with the boneheaded moves he makes

Rhaybhus is Brandon Moss's twin brother
He can play first base but can't hit for power and strikes out 237 times a season
Mo is thinking about bringing him up to the bigs so he can try and induce Dog to stroke out

My personal feelings about AP aside, if you think the Cardinals owning that contract would be a good thing for them, you are delusional. It would not only have prevented the signing of several key players, it would have required you to play a cripple at first base. And since we don't have a DH, he would have actually been sitting 40-60 games a year or more. For all of Mo's issues right now, that is one very good non-signing. I simply can't see how having that albatross hanging around their neck is a good thing. Because he might bop 20 or 30 HR's a year?
Take down the AP Fathead poster, rework the AP shrine into something new and get over him. He's washed up and the Cardinals got 80% of what he had to give...
Oh, and this current team really only has a few holes they need to fill. The big issue is not talent. It is a culture of bad, sloppy, poor fundamental baseball. The coaches and the players have created this culture. And that kind of baseball ALWAYS loses more than it wins. Until the culture changes, the losing will continue... That is on Matheny far more than Mo. And rest assured, Mo does not have the authority to replace him. That call has to come from the top... MM is DeWitt's boy...

Back off RyDabhus, in 2021 you boys out West will be trying to track down all three of the Royals fans who are still buying tickets to that circus act.

It always comes back to picking on the team that isn't supposed to be good.
I have caught a couple of segments of Cards games on MLB Network this year - crime in the area must have led to a curfew in the area....cause after about the 5th inning there is less attendance than any Royals game I have seen
I bet with Pujols and Heyward back though - the stands would be full....just sayin

I see the Royals bunch is unhappy with their Former Cardinals pickup. Someone was smoking crack while shooting heroin Between their toes to sign that MOFO.
You will NEVER hear me say the cards should have sign Heyward. Hell, the Cubs people hated him last year.........except he was a leader in the clubhouse. $25 million a year to be a cheerleader in the clubhouse and bat .220. Ya enjoy that Kool-Aid. The only reason Royals attendance is decent.........they have buy one get 5 free tickets with 50 cent beer

He googled it wrong -
New thing they are doing in the Rhaybhus section....called the 5 for 5 deal...buy five tickets, get five free tickets and your choice of 5 free Rhaybhus Wheat or Rhaybhus Light...your choice.
Exciting thing is you get to watch a come from behind win with a walk off home run......instead of watching your pitching staff give up 4 home runs and 10 rbi's to one player

That happens when your manager is an idiot and challenges an out made......to keep one run off the board. Magic Mike forked that up. I guess he didn't have much faith in his offense, playing in a hitters ballpark against a pitching staff worse than his bullpen.
Hey should change the name of Busch stadium to Natural Light Stadium........to reflect the style of play on the field.

Pretty sure the last 6 games were all lost after giving up the lead after 6 innings.
The Reds, mind you, are 21-1 with a lead after 6 innings.
As hard as it is for these players to pull out of this malaise on the field it's Matheney who continues to pull the obvious wrong levers at the most critical times.
I won't say it's over, not that, but right now man the whole thing pretty much looks like fido's butt to me.

I can understand pulling the pitcher after 6 when you are BEHIND and have a chance for a big inning, but have never in my life seen the starter pulled when they already had the lead??
The bullpen has been a problem all year, why do you bring them in the game even earlier??
My oldest wanted to watch the NBA playoffs. Said it was better than watching the Cardinals lose. I can't stand the NBA, so I told him if the Cards gave up the lead, we'd switch it. Cecil was pitching with a 4-1 lead and runners at 1st and 2nd when I made my statement.
It took Cecil about 8 pitches before I had to change the channel...

That move was a month late. Christ he just had Peralta in the line up last weekend in Chicago for 2 games. The other moves? zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Now I read where Grichuk gets his job back when he returns. So Pham, one of 2 players doing well, he sits ??? It's ridiculous. let Grichuk SIT and think about it and earn his way back in, if he can.
Matheney needs to put doubt and accountability in every single one of these players minds. The errors, bad base running, poor execution............these guys need to pay for this crap and then see how that might go. For a forking change.

Well - depends on the day. Yesterday not so much....kid had a mean bender and fooled him a couple of at bats....just couldn't get the timing down and guessed wrong on a couple.
All in all...above .350 facing lefties on the season.

dabs is prolly aware of this already, but a local kid that I know personally, got drafted by the Nationals last week in the 10th round. Kid just had Tommy John surgery and was throwing 96-97 before that. He could have been a top 5 round or higher pick, when healthy.
Anyway, sorry Bubba, but go NATIONALS!!!

That would be all the Chitcago people and MOMO living idiot Chitcago fans voting for a career .260 guy.........who isn't even hitting his career average. They are used to mediocrity and average players. A .262 guy is someone to get worked up over. His WAR though. Man. Thanks worth voting for. His WAR means so damn much to Mediocrity loving baseball guys.

I'm still trying to figure out who America's team is...............but I did notice the Braves have the same record as the Cardinals. It's DEFINITELY time for Matheny to go when I see that

So the Cardinals sent Aledmys Diaz to AAA, with Wong on the DL. Not that I'm a fan of Wong, but one actual MLB player on the DL.........and management sends a guy hitting .260, while leading the team in hits and doubles to AAA. It makes zero sense. His average BTW is better than Carps, Piscotty, & Fowler. Your leading hitter gets shipped to Memphis while you promote a guy hitting .254 in the minors........Diaz Is hitting .260 in the Majors. If a kid isn't hitting .300 in the minors and beating the cover off the ball, he doesn't need to be called up
I'm still waiting for the ENTIRE bullpen to be shipped out. Rosenpuke blew the game 2 days ago. Nearly blew it again last night. Oh needs to hit the Oriental circuit again. When know chit is in piss poor shape when Brett Cecil is actually the guy you can trust right now If it wasn't for the pen, we might be just out of first. Instead we sit in 3rd

A win is a win but dang love how MM waits until the sacks are loaded by Rosie before he sends Bowman in to close for the first time ever.
And yeah, that last 3-2 pitch was a ball by a country mile. But Yadi didn't see it that way. bwaaaaaaaaaaaa
Dusty had to chit a brick on that one.

Yeah---walking a .135 hitter to load the bases was a stroke of genius by Rosenthal
and you are right (damn, I hate saying that LOL)--
it didn't quite take an academy award performance to sell that last pitch
(Welcome to the show rookie-- it was close enough to call)
6 for their last 7--
Seems like all the call ups have been making things happen--
do they have anyone on the farm that can close??

Tough one tonight for another forking sunday night game.
We could have a closer down there, we'll never know it with MM making the calls.

The view from center showed it bending back over the black on the outside....but they did not do the box so you never know
The way umps set up,they are guessing on that outside pitch anyway.
At least they won the series with the Nats but they got spanked last night.
Was texting back and forth with Mel and I told him we might hang a crooked number on the Nats bullpen but the way Max was dealing I wasn't sure if we would ever get to that point.

Redbirds pitching staff:
On the closer thingy.............
http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&cid=235&stn=true&sid=t235
Don't actually know but would guess this Tivailala dude looks the sharpest.
Weird, he has 5 saves but last 10 games zero saves and last 10 games he's running a 3.00 era yet no losses.
Not terrible, and not sure what situations he has been put in, either.
I think he's been up here with the Cards before, right?
I like Bowman but it seems to me he might be best as a later inning setup guy. But SOMETIMES you never know until you put a guy in there. Either way Matheney as usual not exactly on top of this, he's just running out of options.

Yeah--Tuivailala has been up and down--hot and cold-- hasn't been a consistent game end guy
Matheny didn't have much choice-- he had already pitched Oh NO and Lyons in the 8th and then went with Rosenthal....and we saw how that went--Bowman may have been all he had left that he had any confidence in
Bowman is the ground ball guy that Matheny uses when they need a DP
He is the last guy I'd use as a closer but sometimes the circus ends on a good note
Don't know if Matheny drinks but this team might be a good reason to start

Wait! That may be it! AB sales were lagging so they told Matheny to manage like this and Cards Nation drinks more! BRILLIANT!! It's as reasonable as any other explanation..

Brew Crew hot going in against the Yankees this weekend.
Meh Cards with a good draw against the Mets.
Sure seems like a good weekend to pick up ground. That is if you have a team that can actually pick up ground.
Still early, but at some point, it's time to fish or cut bait.

At this rate, Diaz may never get back up here again. bwaaaaaa
How long can DeJong keep this up? Have the Cards really found a decent ss with power?? Is Dawg still pizzed that Diaz was sent down? Questions to ponder.
We catch the cubs at the AS break. There really is a god.
Where would this team be without Phambino and Gyorko? With a couple of kids thrown in here lately.
Some signs of life for the second half. That's a good thing. Now, can they close out some games without looking like the gong show?

Trade Wong. Move Gyorko to 2nd. It's his natural spot. Move Carp back to 3rd. It fits him better. Being Diaz back up and keep DeJong on the big club. They can work on splitting time as SS and both are good PH options. I don't think DeJong can keep up his heroics through the end of July.
There is talk of getting Stanton from Florida. Taking over the richest contact in sports history. SMH. Sure it has a $10 million buyout..........not a fan of that move. Although we could get rid of Grichuck now that he has had his yearly Minor League clear my head trip. As long as Weaver and Reyes don't get shipped out on any trades. I'd rather keep Grichuck around with Phambino and go after some big swinging 1st baseman. A real one, not a Matheny experiment.

Cards have ignored defense for some time now. It's been plug 'n play baseball to fill out a line up card and it shows.
I'd trade quite a few of these guys out IF they were bringing back some people who actually have real positions to play and stats that show a basic, solid history of how to play the game.
Agree Wong is expendable and for me so is Grichuk for the right price.
Diaz is NOT a ss stop and never has been. He hasn't the range or the arm to make the big plays regularly. I like him, but he belongs at second. Or, as you say, a good and valuable platoon/extra IF'er. Or trade bait, if DeJong is for real or any where near where he is right now. And that means his D too, that is first and foremost for who plays short imo.
DeJong is something. Hotter than a firecracker right now but you have to play that out and see where it goes. Voit too showing big power.
Pham and Gyorko and these kids are carrying the team here lately on this uptick. Time for a few others to forking STEP UP (bwaaaaaaaaaaa) and at least play to their career numbers.
Haven't even touched on pitching. Mid and late relief gong show has to end.
This division is up for grabs, but you have to be able to play the basic forkin game if you want it.

It all goes back to not having a great 1st baseman........so we try to rotate the players to make it happen. Gryorko is a 2nd baseman by default. Put him back there. Carp has spent more time at 3rd than anywhere else. Put him back.........or leave Jed at the hot box and Carp at 2nd. DeJong and Diaz can figure out SS and a bench player. Wong has an attitude and has been a cancer in the clubhouse. Is Voit the deal or just another hot call up?? Go get a 1st baseman even if he is only under contract through 2018. Voit is there in the wings if needed.
Phambino deserves to play until he gets hurt or can't produce. Piscotty and Grichuck can split days or Grichuck can give Fowler a day off also. He is a fukin head case and his stock is up. I would shop his ass. Sierrra is in the minors in case we need another fast dude in the outfield. If the Cards go after Stanton, Grichuck and Piscotty might get traded. Or Phambino goes with Grichuck. Piscotty is a Stanford guy and has shown to be healthy. Grichuck would be the first to be traded in that deal.
Mo has several options and good trade bait. He just needs to get rid of Matheny's favorite guys if the opportunity comes up.......i.e., Wong and Grichuck

Are you shoppin Grichuk or not?? Two posts, two stories there dawg.
Next 30 days tells the story. Buyers or sellers. But truth be told, it's time for this team to grow up and get a set line up once and for all that plays the whole game.
This chit is givin me a headache.
I read we have TWO position players that have stayed pat all year and I can only name one of them.

I don't want to take on Stanton and his contract........but if they are going after him, send Grichuck to Miami. He won't be worth a chit in that target right environment. Poor bastard won't get in until 5 am every home game. Sucker will be destroying Puss instead of fastballs.

Whelp apparently the Cards are happy to wallow in 3rd and 4th place with one forking disaster of a bullpen virtually guaranteeing defeat in the teeth of victory.
Defense and the bullpen have simply made this team one big pile of frustration.
How many games have we lost with a lead after 7 innings? Don't know but I will guess it's the most in the major leagues.

If the Cards are not leading the majors in lost leads and errors, they have to be darn close. I never thought I would be one of those people that bash the Mgr., but this falls on MM. You have to take ownership and corrective actions when your team plays so fundamentally poor it would embarrass a little league team. Base running, situational hitting, bunting, fielding, and the list goes on...
How Rosenthal is not on a bus to Memphis or sitting in the press box for a few games, is beyond me. If it was his first offense and he was a stellar performer otherwise, you might overlook it. But he has pulled this stunt before and blown multiple leads to boot. These players know there is no real accountability for their poor play and inexcusably poor fundamentals. Why practice a few hours extra each day? Why spend extra time honing your craft? Its not like Matheny is going to bench them or hold them accountable in any way. No, he wants to be a "player's manager" whatever the hell that means.

So we ship Gonzales off for the potentially big power kid O'neil. I can see that, but O'neil can't help right now.
Cards are clearly stacking up outfielders for some kind of trade. If we are buyers, it just about has to be for closer help. If we are sellers, who the fork knows.
What OF'ers are going? We just sent Sierra down, I guess he didn't run fast enough. Bader is ready to come up, right? Grichuk, Pham, Piscotty........yep wouldn't shock me in the least if these goofs moved Pham as buyers or sellers.
We'll see what happens. Keep the kids...One or both of Grichuk / Piscotty should be dealt I just hope it isn't another give away like the Adams deal. This team needs a decent closer and a decent defense. If we had that we'd be 7-1 on this road trip.

if the bullpen wasn't such a chit show, they'd possibly be leading the division.
I don't see them catching the wild card teams in the west, so either they compete for the central by adding bullpen help or start selling.
it's refreshing to see the young guys (bader) get called up and bust their ass hustling on the field. too bad they eventually get comfortable and start half-assing it on the bases like the veterans.

Agree.
Looking at Pham, Bader, Martinez and Sierra then the Oneal kid who banged one for the Redbirds last night and Marcado in AA I'd shop Grichuk and Piscotty and who ever to get the big bat that's missing or find a guy who can close and make the run this year with that guy.
I don't trust Grichuk or Piscotty to be long term consistent. And for both their d is lacking anyway.
We are very much in this thing if we fix the d and the late inning pitching fiasco.
Not sure what they're doing with Lynn. This deadline is going to be very interesting, or it certainly should be anyway.

LS.......after watching these rookies, I wouldn't throw them a fastball ever. They can't hit a breaking ball to save their ass. DeJong can smoke a fast ball. 2 double tonight off fastballs. The breaking chit, not so much. Bastard swung at one last night that bounced 5 feet in front of the plate. Breaking ball are why he has struck out twice as often as Diaz in the same time frame. Diaz should be back up in September, so we will see how hungry he is when he gets called back up. I'd still rather have his ass on the bench over Greg Garcia.

H2ODOG said: LS.......after watching these rookies, I wouldn't throw them a fastball ever.
Well the kids going to have to wait until Sept to get up here as I see it. No way Matheney swaps out Garcia for Diaz as is right now. That vet thing but not sure Diaz deserves that either because he seems really stuck where he is no better than where he was. I like him and I think he's a player but he's got chit to fix.
Yep DaLong has a flaw and maybe it eats him up but for now he has the teams 2nd best OPS and 16 dingers in 240 AB's and clutch hitting doesn't seem to bother him. He's got decent range, decent arm and might be a top 15 defender at short.
We'll see how they adjust and how he reacts. A hanging curve goes just as far as a heater. I agree his challenge will be to hit for average will have to wait and see.

At our house it was worse than that. The wife does not cuss but when she saw Cecil in the game I thought she was going to start.
Since she doesn't....I do and I'm sure there was a blue cloud of profanity floating in the upper atmosphere last night and the air traffic controllers at Lambert were re-routing aircraft to avoid it.

HotLanta obviously didn't read the scouting report on DeJong. They kept firing fastball after fastball to him.
Lots of Cardinal players closing in on 20 HR season. We could 6-7 players with 20 bombs or More on the season. Pretty impressive, especially having Mabry as the hitting coach.

2 days passed since you were harping on this and he has hit two more homers since. Only you can b1tch about a good player, let two days pass and watch him hit two more, then b1tch again that he can't hit a curve. What does this mean, he can't hit curve? Says who? You saying he's a wash out or what?
Ted Simmons says this kid is the real deal, he has zero doubt in his mind about how good a player he will be. And Ted Simmons knows everything he needs to know about this kid. He had 13 dingers in the minors this year and 17 up here since June 1.
He's what 23? He has a lot to learn, no doubt. But tell me the last time we had a midfielder come up the ranks with this kind of power?
I think between the two you picked the wrong horse dude. Don't expect you to admit it but at some point at least you need to LET IT GO and let the kid go and hit his homers. bwaaaaaaaaaa

Dude............take the valium pills. DeJong has been a pleasant surprise. I hope the kids keeps it up, and he will be in the running for ROY What I SINPLY STATED, before you went all bat hit postal with your manifesto............ . . . . . . . . . Right now,...........currently..........at this point in his young career.........he can't hit a breaking ball, a curve ball, or a good slider. He is a fastball hitter, like the vast majority of all great AAA prospects. The ones that get to stay in the Majors.........learn to hit the off speed stuff. The Scouts learn after watching him.........not to throw him a fastball and put the adjustment on the hitter.
I'm not bitching about him hitting doubles and dingers.......he'll hit 40 of each every year. My comment was the Braves haven't seen him, Noe done their scouting on him. He can't hit the breaking ball. Any opposing manager should feed him a steady diet of off speed stuff, until he adjusts it gets sent back to AAA to figure it out.
Relax Francis. Unless he shows to be able to adjust or hit off speed stuff, he becomes a .250 guy with 15 HR a year. Scouts , managers, and catchers will figure it out. It's a matter of time. If dude adjusts he will do well. If not, well Diaz and him will be a great Tandem in Memphis.

Who besides you says he can't hit a curve ball?
He has a 1.5 runs above average hitting curve balls.
He is above run average on every pitch but the knuckler. He probably sees 4 of those a month.
He's a kid. Sure he hits more fast balls who doesn't but his biggest issue is swinging at balls vs strikes. He needs more patience. But he takes the cheese. He needs to fix that.

Uh........lots of people. His non contact batting average is one of the worst in the league. That's a strikeout, walk or hit batter. Its the worst actually non contact BA in the league. He hits nearly 77% of the fastballs thrown to him. He hits about 61% of the breaking balls. Breaking balls and balls up give him fits. I'd explain more but you go read the article. I'm not the only one who thinks he can't his the slow curvy chit......or the high chit. He isn't the next Mike Trout or Pujols.
Just watch his AB's. See what balls he hits and which ones he doesn't. Pay attention the ones leaving the park and the ones becoming ours or K's. Have someon help you kept track of pitch speeds and locations confuse you.

Well junior, he can hit curve balls, as I said he is 1.5 runs above average hitting them.
He hits fastballs far better, like most players, and that's hardly breaking news.
His biggest issue, by far, is pitch selection and swinging at more strikes and fewer balls. That's his number one problem, pretty obvious.

Wore out with these umpires who all have their own version of what a basic ball and strike are.
Baseball needs to go to Radar/infra red whatever technology for balls and strikes.
In or out. No more imagination.

Ump didn't have anything to do with Carpenter being thrown out at the plate ON A FORKING SINGLE TO CENTER FIELD-- wasn't even close
Ump didn't throw a right down the middle of the plate straight fastball on the 2nd pitch to a Sox player who promptly hit it over the Green Monster in the 9th inning
Ump didn't throw a hanging slider that was hit to the wall with the RISP in the 9th inning
Ump didn't botch the relay to the plate that should have at least resulted in an extra innings game
Did the ump have a by guess and by golly strike zone?--- yep
Did the by guess and by golly strike zone lead to extra men on in the 9th?-- yep
The Cards choked--- give the ump an assist but the Birds just could not close the game out

Well Capt Obvious it's the breaking balls out of the strike zone that is causing him to swing and miss. He thinks he is getting the heater, and the bottom falls out of it. He has one of the WORST non contact averages in the entire league. He makes contact with about 60% of the breaking balls thrown to him. Nearly 80% ok fastballs. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what to throw him. Breaking balls that start on the plate and fastballs high in the zone. Those two things are the reason he would strike out 200 times in a normal season. The good teams with good pitching figure that chit out, and production falls once they don't throw a fastball to him. He has to make corrections to stay around.
Much like Carpenter never swinging at the first pitch and not making adjustments to do so. I hope DeJong keeps smashing the ball and hits 30-40 HR a year every year. I just don't see it happening if he doesn't adjust to MLB off speed pitches.

Dreaded dawg Jinx??????? You mean like not writing off the Redbirds when we were 9.5 games back from Atlanta or say we would sign Tillmon, the Porter Brothers, and Harris...........mmmnnn K. Ya the only one I misses there was the Knox kid.
Cards have the bats to get into the playoffs. The starting pitching will be the demise of this team. The bullpen is coming around.except Cecil. Rosenthal has an issue to get looked at now. The Cards have a way better chance of winning the Central than the Royals do of winning their Division. Bet that 50-11 times.

I'm still waiting for DeJong to step up and hit the breaking speed Stuff. Captain obviousl flips every day on that one
It's just the breaking balls off the plate........ :rotflmao I thought a break ball was a pitch that looked like a strike and falls out of the zone as a ball, but the batter gets fooled and swings with a miss. Sure the hanging BB, DeJong crushes. 99% of MLB players crush the hanger. A .300 hitter than DeJong is right now, is on pace for 200 K's a season. A 200 strikeout guys doesn't hit .300 He might hit 40 HR's but he will be hitting about .230 at best

But you guys needn't worry, I'm sure baseball isn't about to fix that mess anytime soon. They love the human element so much they over rule them on video routinely. bwaaaaaaaaaa

So the Redbirds traded Leake.........for another infielder AND we sent Seattle $17 million. Leake started the season strong and couldn't get run support. He has fallen off hard the last couple months. When our bullpen needs serious work, we trade for an infielder. What the Fork???? Weaver should fill a void, but that still leaves us a starter short. Wacha is hit or miss. He's fighting Swain's for the #4 spot IMO
Who the fork do they plan to use as a starting pitcher now???? Waiting is done as a starter. He needs to hit he bullpen again to finish his career. His control isn't there. His velocity is down. If he had control like Maddox or Smoltz, with his lower velocity he could stay in the rotation. He's a #4 starter at best.
Mo has to spend some of that $1 Billion TV package money. We need real starters, Cecil needs to go, a real reliever and bullpen help needs to be found, and a true power hitter in the OF or at 1st. This piece mill chit ain't working.

I thought we settled that. He produces off curve balls above average. What don't you understand about "above average"?
Leak was a POS and had to go. Terrible signing to begin with. Horrible. Clubhouse problem to boot. It was a classic and expensive cash dump to Seattle, where he might actually be able to perform better.
Dawg and I agree on a lot of what the team needs but I'll go a step further.
Piscotty needs to go.
I would protect only Yadi, Fowler, Pham and Kelly and from that we need to get a true first baseman with power and a SET outfield and a good closer with a set up man. The OF part should be no problem.
I am up in the air but very leery on signing Lynn to some huge contract. Change that, don't sign him.
Weaver Wacha Reyes Alcontara/Flagherty??? Martinez
There's still good young arms on the farm beyond above when needed. F/A pick up here as well to round out the top five. DeWallet needs to buck up, if his GM is worth a chit it all works out.
Sick of these stupid azz long term contracts for guys like Leak nothing more than anchors on the teams neck. That's what I think Lynn will be too so let him go he is not worth 90-100 million.
Lots of great things happening on this team but MAJOR changes are in order. This teams needs to get back and emphasize, or at least focus, on D. Guys like Carpenter and Gyorko and Piscotty are not good enough to hide playing like they are.
MAJOR changes are in order.

Still one of the worst non contact averages in the majors............and that's because of his swings and misses from the breaking stuff. Once good teams figure out he can't hit an off speed pitch , he won't get many fast balls. Then we get to see what he is really made of. The 9 men LOB 2 nights ago was real cute also.

DeJong smoked a Fastball into the seats just now. He saw 3 breaking balls and got a fastball with a hitters count. He looked confused on the first 3 breaking balls. I'm surprised Bum threw him a fastball.

Beginning to look like the division title might be the best opportunity for the redbirds.
One of the great things about baseball is the 162 game schedule, the dog days then the ups and downs of the last tough month. The kids from Memphis have put a lot of energy into this team when Matheney allows it. I hope its enough.
Definitely looking from the outside in right now but dang, the Cards are in contention again.

I read a quote by Wacha regarding yesterday's game. He was being praised for his effort and said something to the effect that it is coming down to the wire and these games are all important now... I want to take players like him that say stupid chit like that and choke them!! Do these slackin' mofo's not understand that wins and losses in May and June and July count exactly the same as the ones today?
Combine that moronic statement with the one Pham made a few weeks ago, about so few guys working hard every day and you have all you need to know about the leadership on this club. And it all starts with the Manager. Matheny is a sub-par MLB Manager and needs to be reassigned to some other job. You don't realize how much you need a cut throat, win-at-all-costs manager, until you have to watch a "players manager" like this guy...
All that being said, this pathetic excuse for a team could actually find themselves in the post season. I wouldn't bet a plug nickle on it and if they get in, I would bet even less on them winning a series. But I guess stranger things have happened and I'll be more than happy to eat crow, if they do. But every time this team has been close, they chit their drawers and take two steps back.

The cardinals bullpen is the reason we aren't sitting in 1st place. April, May, June, July........you name the month. Cecil, Broxton, Oh No, Rosenpuke early. You can't blow games late and expect to win a division
17 blown saves by the pen. 27 losses on the shoulders of the pen also.........and we are just 2 games back in the division. 40% of our losses are from the bullpen. That's unacceptable and the reason we sit 2 games back in the division.

I'll take it considering all the issues.
They really need 2 of 3 up there to have a shot, and Martinez needs his good stuff to get it done.
4-8 so far against these guys. They either got it or they don't right now. Hoping to see a pissed off John Lackey later today.
Oh wait a minute, I'm teeing off this afternoon.

You do realize the walleye are still biting good at........nebermind. I forgot you golfers don't fish
I got asked to play golf today........and declined to go sit in a tree stand. I hate deer hunting but stil chose it over golf. I take it you don't bow hunt either.
I am watching Lackey and Contrarras blow a head basket on TV right now. Apparently Lackey didn't get a call and lost his mind on a guy that scored people. Way better than golf

It is over, finished, done... Time to look forward to some Blues hockey.
The Cards season can be summed up pretty easy. They had a roster with holes in it all year long, they played as fundamentally poor as you can play in the bigs and they had a bullpen that was grossly ineffective far too many times. This isn't too hard to figure out. If they want to win next year, priority #1 will have to be new leadership. You can put all the talent you want on a team, if the leader isn't a true leader and doesn't demand perfection from his players, they will not succeed. If you can't hold people accountable for their work habits and performance, you can't lead them. Fixing the holes in the roster and the bullpen isn't going to be easy but it really isn't that hard to identify the issues. They just need to avoid fixes like Cecil and Fowler. Heavy price tags and mediocre or worse performances will put you in a hole you can't dig out of...
Let's go Blues!!

Well fork.....you might as well get a couple sharp objects, and poke out your damn eyes is that's what you are looking forward to. Talk about one lack of performance, no heart, no one stepping up to the plate team, not living up to expectations.......trading one poor team for one just like it, possibly even worse. fork......you might as well watch some Pizzou football in your down time if you like to be so damn Miserable.

For the record, Fowler wasn't the issue. Yes he started off the season with one of the worst starts a player could have. Dude has batted .285 in the second half of the season and batted .286 in the month of June. April and May hurt his average bad. He hit lots of HR's but that was about it. A few stints on the DL didn't help either.
Same player as Heyward offensively for less money......but we still overpaid to get him to sign. He's more of a $10-14 million a year guy.

No doubt Fowler was not THE problem. He was, however one of many problems. For what he was paid and what was expected, he was a significant disappointment. No way to sugar coat it. He was being paid to play at a reasonable level all year. He will likely have around 60 RBI's, over 100 strikeouts and played a below average outfield, by any metrics you want to use. I hope like hell he gets is chit together next year or this will go down as one of the worst signings in the last several years... Although Cecil may have that honor already wrapped up.

Worst signing? bwaaaaaaaa ....Fowler played hurt a lot. He is definitely not the problem they need to fix so why bring him up. This team has tons to do before mentioning his name. He needs to move out of center and I think he will.
Grichuk, Piscotty, Carpenter. There's 3 problems.
Bullpen, there's 4 problems at least.
Clean up, there's one really big problem.
Matheney, he's beyond problems.
And as difficult as it is, Mo might be the biggest problem of all if he doesn't make MAJOR CHANGES for next year.
Lightning could stike on Mike Shannons head AND they could win the WS but it wouldn't change my mind on any of this.
This team needs a big time shake up.

Was at the feed store today getting a bag of winter wheat and one of the hangers around threw out that the Cards only have to go 9-3 if they can beat the Cubs and Brewers in the last week and a half.....and yes, he was dead serious
Thought the roof would fall in from all the laughing.

Mac has a far better chance of going crane hunting with me this fall than the Redbirds do of making the playoffs............and he ain't ever coming crane hunting with me.

Yeah....I'm tired of Maddon's bull chit also but I'm more tired of Matheny's brain freeze when it comes to winning a 'must win game'.
What game was he watching?? Everybody in the park knows that Wacha can go south real fast when he faces the lineup for the 3rd time. Did we have anyone up in the bull pen??
No--
it wasn't until the Cubs had a 4-1 lead did he do anything of note. Where was all this expanded roster bull chit? Where was all this 'all hands on deck'?
Where was this "do everything to win today's game philosophy'?
Back in the day-- we could have had quite a few proven major league managers wanting the Cardinal job-- Francona comes to mind
but DeWitt and company decided on the litle league manager out of Wildwood
Matheny has lived off the LaRussa glory years's for nearly 6 years now and is running out of 'glory'. All the marketing and all the hype will soon sound pretty hollow if the Cardinals don't make some moves to actually beat Central Division teams.
So Fork Joe Maddon but FORK Mike Matheny even more

Wu...........your post is exactly why I started the 2018 Cardinals post early. I knew we were forked a month plus ago. Matheny needs to go. I would have hit every player in a Cubs uniform I could all night long. Molina would have been pitching, since I would have used every damn pitcher I had. fork Maddon and the fork the CUBS

We all agree on MM. That forking do nothing move while Wacha gives up 5 straight hits is unacceptable in April but beyond comprehension in September. Total BS. Insulting, actually.
Last weekend, another huge game, he burns up Lyons in that big run beating the Pirates put on us then next night what does he do? Lyons can't pitch of course, apparently nobody can pitch....tied game....so he brings in OH followed by.....you guessed it...Cecil. Total predictable disaster for anybody but Mike.
Maddon is perhaps the most over hyped guy in baseball. He steps into a team that tanked for 8 years to get what 5-6 top draft picks?? He deserved to lose last years WS too with those bone headed moves of his own. He's a cry baby who swoons at the press and they eat it up. But your right Wu, he's manhandled Matheny quite well, beaning when he wants with no response and then feigning who me.
Fork em both.

Birds are done, as of last night's loss.
I follow the Rox about as much as the Birds, so go Rockies!!
They don't look too impressive either, so i'm not getting to excited about them.
I enjoy baseball period. It'll be a fun post season. Prolly funner than watching the Birds attempt to play all season.
