No sense in waiting around. Stillman and Armstrong are already huddled around a table with their assistants and scouts and coaching staff, trying to figure out who to sign, who to let walk, who to trade and who to draft...
The draft is tonight and tomorrow. Buffalo went from a likely top 5 pick, from the Blues, on January 3rd, as part of the O'Reilly trade to #31 as of last week. Between that and Berglund quitting hockey, they can't be looking too fondly on that trade. But they also have #7, as the result of their own efforts this past season. The Blues don't pick until #62, so not much chance of an immediate impact player. Unless, of course, they trade up...
I am thinking everyone in STL is wondering how they are going to get rid of Allen and not have to eat some of his salary. Maybe Buffalo is willing to deal again Dumping him and that salary would free up some cap room and allow them to sign a respectable back-up for half his cost or less. Then they have to figure out how to deal with the Binnington signing. Do they do a gap deal and have to pay more at the end of it or just bite the bullet and sign him long term? I wouldn't want to have to make that call. As a side note, his agent is Mike Liut.
The rest is even more complicated, especially when you look at the contracts coming due in the next 2 years. Simply put, there are going to be some significant changes to this team between now and the start of the '19-'20 season. Sort of hard to think about while still basking in the glory of the Cup win but a reality nonetheless. Griffin may get his way and they'll not have some of the players he hates so much. And finally, can we scale back on the playing of Gloria? Great story and fun while it lasted but anyone that isn't getting a little Gloria burnout is probably still drunk from last week.
Go Blues

All opinion:
They'll try to get Binner signed for 2-3 years at 2-3 mil per.
Schenn is the most vulnerable "big name" guy this summer for trade.
1 or 2 of Eddy, Gunner, Fabbri or even Sanford are leading candidates to get moved as well
Allens road record will likely be enough for a team to take a flyer on him if the Blues provide some reasonable compensation to go along with it. But if Army wants to fit Allen in the cap he might just ride with the same tandem again.
Right now they need to get Chief signed. The Blues said all along no problem, but it's starting to look like a problem with this delay.

No need to wait Walt. Let’s get right into the 2019-2020 hatin’
Oh, did you see your Predators traded Subban? That’s the second time he’s been involved in a big trade. Must be a little something going on there... How’s it being received by your fellow Preds fans?

I have no idea about the Predators......but I'm headed to Nashville in a couple weeks for a party weekend....I'll let you know what I hear.
As for Subban......yeah, I wouldn't doubt that he's a locker room problem for some teams....he never knows when to shut up.
New Jersey got Hughes, and now they get Subban.....good time to be a Devil's fan......maybe I'll look into that.
I hope the Blues don't sit on their hands.....there is work to be done if they truly want a good run out of these young guys they have brought up. A "one hit wonder" is fun, but they still don't have the scoring talent to be called a yearly contender for the Cup. I want them to win another.

I agree I want some changes, standing pat is never a good thing, just ask the Preds.
Petro and Schenn loom large in how they want to proceed and work their cap at the same time. If they want to dish Schenn off they had best bring in a strong scoring forward to do it.
And well face it, Petro is likely retiring a Blue after the Cup run he just had and forking Karlsson just signing for 11 million forkin dollars X 8 I believe by the dumb azz Sharks doesn't help any. My take is that Petro would want to stay here and Army should not go half cork to sign some landmark deal to get him when his contract expires after next season. Army's strong suit has been trades and drafting and it's this extension chit that has gotten him in hot water.
This is going to be an interesting off season. While I hope Army plays his cards right with Schenn and Petro he needs to just forking sign Chief and give him his due. He earned what's coming to him.

I don't think DA will stand pat. Here is a quote from him sometime in the past few days: “It can be tough because you won,” coach Craig Berube said. “And you look at everybody and you go, ‘Well, why change anything or do this?’ But in the end, you still gotta look at getting better and improving at some point. That’s the business side of the thing.”
I can't imagine they won't do something stupid for Pietro. He earned his salary this year but the Blues need to take a lesson from the Patriots. Better to get rid of players a year or two too soon than pay them for even one season more than their worth. That's the reality in a salary capped league. They showed that restraint with Backes and it was a great move. Will they with Pietro? Now, if he's willing to do a Blues friendly deal, they should do it. But I think there will be more than a few teams out there that will offer him stupid money. Imagine what they could get for him in a trade with a team that thinks they are close and need that one piece. I'm guessing he would fetch a decent player and a few premium draft picks.
I have little doubt the Berube is going to get every dollar he can out of this deal. Hard to blame him. And I also have little doubt that Stillman has the balls to get into a staredown with him. I would be shocked if he doesn't get at least $2-$3 mil for 3-5 years. And they may be looking at more than that, if Berube wants to play hardball. He has the Barry Trotz model to follow. Of course Trotz had significantly more NHL experience as a head coach that Berube. But the walk away model has been set. And rest assured, plenty of NHL GM's would dump their HC in a minute to sign him...
Going to be an interesting few weeks, once July 1st rolls around.
Go DA!!

Looks like Berube for 3 years. No word on the value of the contract but I would guess $2-$3 mil per year. Either way, they have him for 3 years. If he brings them another Cup, they can extend it and up the price to $4-$5 mil per year...
I think people undersell his tactical skills, over and above his motivational and team building abilities. He Ott and Van Ryn (with help from Larry Robinson) put a system together that suited the roster they had and got the players to buy into a physical, smothering style of play. He played match-ups like Scotty Bowman and often controlled top lines with his match-ups. More than any Blues coach I can recall, he made in-game adjustments that showed from period to period. I don't have the stats but I'm willing to bet their 3rd periods were their best.
Glad to have him for a few more years. He earned it..

Not so much.....they outscored the opponent by 1 in 3rd periods. They are best when they score first.....end of discussion. When they don't....it's a toss up but they can throw some real stinkers up on the board.
Let's call it what it is.....he gets the most out of the players he coaches. He is a master motivator. Ott and Robinson likely have more to say about match-ups than Berube does.
In the end, no matter, he is signed.

and that right there is the key to any great coach, and it doesn't matter at what level, pee-wee to the pros. anyone can manage a game filled with all-stars, but a great coach develops players and comes up with a style/plan that fits their strengths, even when the majority might be below avg talent-wise.

The fact he walked the walk was a lot different deal than the prior coaches with this group. I am convinced he is a simple man with a simple plan and then he has the creds to put it in place.
I pray Larry comes back. He must come back.

If they do get together for a beer they need to let me know. After watching the two of them on here for the last 6 months I'd make a trip across the state to see it and I'd even buy the first round as long as there was no brown liquor involved!

Send your cards and letters and complaints to Kawhi Leonard.
Somewhere in one of these rants I missed a post about The Desert Classic Golf Tourney. We've been for the past 2 years, during the week, when they have after concerts. This year, was fun when Sammy Hagar was playing, and Hadwin was leading. Before last year, I'd never been to a pro tournament.
