Bennett Springs
      #87585 - 03/08/07 07:37 PM

The 12 yo (aka the Peanut) and I are heading for Bennett Springs in the morning and will be down there until Sunday. If you're down Bennett Springs way this weekend, look us up! I drive a Silver Ford F-150 FX-4 with a bunch of duck stickers on the rear window. We're staying at Larry's but will prolly spend the majority of our time down there with a flyrod in hand wading in the stream.

I'll see ya down there bro. I'm headed out right after work tomorrow afternoon. I'm staying with some family in one of thoe 4-plex kitchenett dealios down by the pool. It may end up being a little rainy, but the pellet hatch should be hot

Shawn I'll check in periodically up at the Spring to see if you're standing on your rock!

Mornings were slow, afternoons were better. Spin fishers at the spring hole seemed to be doing OK on brown and rainbow colored rooster tails. We had marginal success on San Juan worms, moderate on pellet hatch, and the best on olive scuds fished on the bottom. Finished with 3 on Sat with 6 released, and 4 on Sun with 8 released. No lunkers, just small to average stockers. Overall a pretty slow trip by usual Bennett Spring standards.

Shawn we came looking for you a couple of times at the Spring Hole but you were no where to be found.

While fishing was neither fast nor furious it was entertaining. I was surprised to see a bigger crowd on Sunday then Saturday. Caught fish on a variety of methods. My favorite stripping a crackleback was more successful with the sun shining. I would have to say a #12 blue worked best. I also caught fish on a gold wrapped hare's ear nymph in a size 14 or 16. The old reliable "John Deere" worked well too. My 12 YO became very adept at matching "the gut hatch" at the cleaning station above the dam and caught several fish on white or pink and white marabou on his fly rod. He had a nice fish that was close to a pound and a half doing that on Sunday. All in all a good time and the weather copperated nicely. Now it;s time to put some trout on the smoker!

Tim I was only at the spring hole for a couple of hours in the mornings. We fly fished the stretch between the upper dam and the handicapp jetties in the afternoon, did'nt do any mid day fishing at all. I saw your truck there at the Cedar when I went to get my lucky Hillbilly burger. Was gonna holla at ya then, but my folks drove by as I was walkin out with my burger and wanted me to go to Lebenon with them. The next time I got a chance to drive past I did'nt see your truck.

We talked about trying Hillbilly Burger but never got there. For future reference.. is it any good and is it reasonable??

We'll have to make plans to meet somewhere next time brother MacGyver!

I loves me some Hillbilly burger. Prices ain't so bad comparred to the azz raping evey place else down there will give ya. They ain't as big as they used to be but ya won't go hawngry. The Hillbilly Burger consists of a 1/4 lbs whole hog sausage patty nestled between two 1/3 lbs all beef patties, smothered with grilled onions and melted cheese, and whatever else ya want, served up on a kaiser bun. You know it's good when the grease runs down and drips off yer elbow Ummmmm, ummmmm!!! I always pack along a portable defibrulator just in case.

Does the older couple still own Hillbilly's?
Did Larry retire?
Is Ed at Larry's now?

We headed down to Branson after Bennett on Sat afternoon. We caught quite a few smaller fish above the dam gave em to IIFID's bud and lit out. Table rock generatin hard, spent the night and headed to Beaver (OK got a little beaver the night before as well) fished there for two days and caught some nice fish, much prettier than Bennett and alot quiter. Went to roaring river for Mon afternoon and got a limit of nice fish. Monday morning returned to Bennett fished til 2 limited 3 fish over 2lbs and one very small one. Iverall a great trip, LIW sorry I missed ya, IIFID was nice seeing you and Peanut again.
