Does anyone have a source where you can give them the serial number off a pistol, and find out the dope on it regarding date of manufacture, original cost, and maybe where it was shipped? Colt will do it but only if you go through their archive system, and they want $75 to give you an offical placque with the info. It has a lot of meaning in the family, but I would just as soon not pay Colt $75 for the answers.

I tried the last link as the pistol is a 1908 .380 pocket pistol not a 1911. What they showed for historical was actually the instructions that came with the gun. We have the original box and instructions. Thanks for the info, though. There may yet be something on that site to work with.

there are a couple of links at the bottom of this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colt_Model_1903_Pocket_Hammerless that may have info. That's a neat gun. It's not really hammerless like today's striker fired pistols. The hammer is enclosed in the arch part at the rear of the slide. Try searching for "general officers colt", there is a book about them on Amazon. Cool stuff, post pics if you have them. If the economy was such that people had a lot of loose cash, you may have a $2K gun there.

the factory letters are a good investment, since you have the factory box and paperwork, I would get one.

Deano,
The one I have is the Type II, nickle plated, walnut (I think) grips. I seriously doubt it has had much more than a box of shells run through it judging by the condition. I may go ahead and get the factory archive info; just haven't decided yet. Thanks for the info

Mel, that pistol's a great keepsake and a valuable investment - but if I were you I'd DELETE that serial number from your post, above, right now.
The way this government's going, you don't want anything like that in writing, on the Internet where anyone can read it, linking you and that particular handgun. I don't trust 'em - not one bit.

Fair enough. When I was a working deputy, we had to memorize the serial numbers of the handguns, shotguns, and handcuffs we carried. That's important information if equipment gets switched around in the confusion of a scuffle.
I burned those so deep into my memory that I'll never forget them. That turned out to be handy, because now I use them for website passwords.
