AR's are kinda like LEGO's for adults. You can do/attach almost anything with them.
Uppers come in a LOT of calibers. The only real constraint on the calibers is as long as the overall cartridge length is no more than a .223 Remington you can use a standard lower and they are accurate.
Direct gas impingement is standard or you can get a piston driven one.
Magazines are (generally) everywhere and cheaper than Mini 14 mags.
The tactical Mini 14 I don't have any experience with. The standard Mini 14 and the Ranch Rifle (which I have) are as reliable as a brick and they are piston driven. The Mini's are not generally as accurate as AR's.
One other thing about the Mini 14's - you do NOT want to crack a round off at a coyote or any other critter for that matter, out the driver's window of your truck unless you want the inside of your windshield to have chunks missing or cracked. They throw brass like a mofo.

I know they're lots of fun to shoot.
I like keeping mine simple. I have a Bushmaster that I bought from a gun shop (during the Clinton years), and an AR pistol that I assembled from parts not too long ago. I still don't know a lot, but I learned quite a bit during the pistol assembly process.

Even though the AR doesn't throw brass like a major league pitcher, when fired from the driver's window the empties tend to gravitate to the defroster vents. An inexpensive brass catcher is very helpful. Just sayin'.
Oh, and another thing - A section of split foam pipe insulation slipped over the driver's window makes a very comfortable rest, allowing for the window to be moved up and down to adjust elevation on those longer shots. Again, just sayin'...

I usually shoot mine out the passenger side window....that way the brass collects in the back seat and leaves no evidence on the road.......uh wait, no evidence in the field.

I have both, I like my mini and it takes a ton of abuse, bumps like a mofo. I have had my ar for 4 months now and it has yet to feel a loaded mag in it. I need ot get out and shoot it, but like you it is a tool.

You'd probably save what hearing you have left by stopping the truck and resting the rifle on a fence post.....but then you would look around in the weeds for the brass, get thirsty, lean the rifle against the fence, go to the truck for 8 or 10 beers, forget about the yote, brass and rifle not to mention where you shot it and then spend the next week driving around the county looking for it.....with the price of gas, it'll be cheaper to break a few windshields.
