Smokey Duck - Washington, MO
      #248929 - 05/26/15 08:02 AM

Stopped in for a bite, on my way home from Table Rock Memorial Day. I had the smoked duck and it was very good. The wife had the pulled pork and it was good but not great. It's not Pappy's, Bogarts or even Sugarfire but I'd go back... Give it a try.

Also bought a hat because I like the way they looked...

Bill, when you're out that way house shopping, stop in and give it a try. I'd say it is good enough for relocation purposes. Just don't go there expecting award winning BBQ.

Went there a couple weeks ago and it wasn't bad. The pork was pretty good and the side order was pretty big. Not to pricey except for the pork steaks and ribs. I like Two Dudes in Warrenton better.

Wu, your wife is pretty smart to want to move out this way. We're about 15 minutes north of Washington and we love it out here. None of the concerns you have living anywhere near the Lou.

Yep......going to look around New Haven as well but us poor retired chiggers hurt every time we see what it will cost us to escape.

Already told her she will have to get a job

Lived in New Haven about 10 or so years. Housing a lot cheaper out there than Washington. Not much for eats but Buck's Hilltop Lounge (bar) has the best hamburgers and cheapest drinks, coldest beer in Franklin Co.

Wu, look at the other way: what will it cost you to stay there? My brother lives in N. County and his home value has dropped in half in the last ten years. fish is right, New Haven has some cheaper digs so does Warren county where we live. 15 minute drive to Washington.

We never look at a house as an "investment"-- it is where we live and we have had a good run where we are but.......times they are a changin

there was a great deal in Washington that had a view of the Missouri and was about the size we wanted that I told her we needed to make an offer on but she was hesitant--needless to say it was gone pretty quick

I have to say that Washington looks pretty 'self contained' and you really don't have to run into St Louis to get what you need.

We will see

It is very self contained in Washington. Unless you want a White Castle they have about everything and a Mercy hospital and docs. We never go to STL or even St Charles to get anything.

Don't know if it is still there or not but the "original" Wimpy could work the whole place himself and could walk to an 8 top take all their orders w/o writing a thing down and get everything right. Ah yes. Brain sammiches with mustard, onions and fries at 200 in the morning

Had lunch at Wimpy's a couple of weeks ago. Good burger and chili but the service was real slow. Just two women working. Not sure what their hours are.

WashMo is better than Jeffcounty where I live by far, or Franklin county for that matter. New Haven is a great area that I have worked in the past. Beautiful and most places have views and decent watering holes.

Smokey Duck has been closed in Washington. The owner replaced it with a burger place called Slamburger. Haven't been there yet so don't know how it is.

Drove by yesterday on the way to the St. John - Gildehaus (in Villa Ridge) for a sausage supper (family tradition) and saw Slam Burger. Looks like they might struggle with that as well, unless the burgers are off the charts good. Lots of competition in that area...

Same people own the Blue Duck on Front street. Have you ever gone to St. John Gildehaus chicken dinner in March? Its awesome.

No, maybe we'll give that a try. We've been going to the Sausage Supper for years. A good family friend and the priest that married my wife and I, 30 years ago, was the pastor there. He invited our whole clan up years ago and we've been making the drive every fall, ever since...

I finished my last bite at about 5:30 last night and I'm still full...

You would enjoy the chicken dinner. It's good food and quite a show. It's sometime in March and will be on their website. We go just about every year. There's a ton of those sausage and turkey dinners all over out here. They go right up to thanksgiving. The first Friday of every month from September to June the Marthasville Club in Marthasville put on an all you can eat chicken and fish dinner with tons of sides and dessert for nine bucks. It's another good one.

I was a little disappointed to see the Sausage Supper up to $14. I get supply and demand but there is a time to back off and be reasonable. My brother has 5 kids (but old enough to pay adult meal price) and has 2 exchange students from Germany. He did the math and said, No Thanks!! He and his family didn't join us this year.

We hit many of the church picnics in the late summer and fall for Sunday afternoon dinners. We live in northwestern St. Charles County, so not may trips into Washington, Marthasville, etc... We hit the ones in Old Monroe, St. Paul, Josephville, Flint Hill, etc...

Been to most of those places and they are good too. They have some good ones in Troy also.
