Walking past a stand of dead elms last night, I thought I heard one snort. Must have been my imagination.

That's how they inflate themselves.

I went scouting for a while this afternoon. The migration hasn't even started in this area as of yet.

A MONTH? Oh, man, I have terminal cabin fever NOW. Office fever.
Maybe we could ask the state legislature to move morel season ahead 30 days to mid-March.

If you can't wait, you could look for oyster mushrooms. There is a species that grows all winter. Have found large amounts of it in the past. It grows large, I've picked'em 12" in diameter. There are a couple of other winter 'shrooms but I've forgotten what they are and am too lazy to look 'em up.

The one I use the most is "National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms". It is as good as any I have seen for identification and is a convenient sized guide (4" x 8.5"x 1.5") to carry in the field. I always identify a new edible using at least 3 sources before trying them. There are some newer books out there that are quite good to use as alternates. A good web source is MushroomExpert.com
