Only 16 kids get to go to state in each event out of thousands. I guess when you strip it all away it doesn't matter one way or another, but the kids work so hard you can't help but want it for them because you know how much they want it. It's not like a team sport, those kids are out there on their own, and when they fail, it's just them....no pats on the back, no "good game"....just them left to deal with the fact that they didn't get it done.
