Glock 19 is a good starting point-- there a quite a few floating around on the used market--looks like a 'tractor' compared to Colt or S&W but reliable and minimal care needed to keep it running
Looking at getting the Mrs a .357 revolver and let her practice with .38 special-- and work up to +P loads and then to .357 pretty much point and shoot with no jams or failure to eject like a semi auto
