I don't think DA will stand pat. Here is a quote from him sometime in the past few days: “It can be tough because you won,” coach Craig Berube said. “And you look at everybody and you go, ‘Well, why change anything or do this?’ But in the end, you still gotta look at getting better and improving at some point. That’s the business side of the thing.”
I can't imagine they won't do something stupid for Pietro. He earned his salary this year but the Blues need to take a lesson from the Patriots. Better to get rid of players a year or two too soon than pay them for even one season more than their worth. That's the reality in a salary capped league. They showed that restraint with Backes and it was a great move. Will they with Pietro? Now, if he's willing to do a Blues friendly deal, they should do it. But I think there will be more than a few teams out there that will offer him stupid money. Imagine what they could get for him in a trade with a team that thinks they are close and need that one piece. I'm guessing he would fetch a decent player and a few premium draft picks.
I have little doubt the Berube is going to get every dollar he can out of this deal. Hard to blame him. And I also have little doubt that Stillman has the balls to get into a staredown with him. I would be shocked if he doesn't get at least $2-$3 mil for 3-5 years. And they may be looking at more than that, if Berube wants to play hardball. He has the Barry Trotz model to follow. Of course Trotz had significantly more NHL experience as a head coach that Berube. But the walk away model has been set. And rest assured, plenty of NHL GM's would dump their HC in a minute to sign him...
Going to be an interesting few weeks, once July 1st rolls around.
Go DA!!
