I think that is exactly right.
As a discussion point, I get that this is a tricky deal with the salary cap. I can see why the Blues don't want to give Maroon a long term contract. I don't know if I agree that Maroon won't sing a 1 year deal. It's the timing that is the mess. I understand why he wants to test the water, but I think the Blues are counting on the idea that he won't get a long term deal and they can keep him because he WANTS to be here with his family. For the life of me I don't see what the rush was to sign Fabbri and tie up that money.
I think the Blues and Maroon are playing a game of chess right now, but it's not a game with any animosity from either party. You could never convince me that Berube doesn't want Maroon back.
I hope the team leaves some room in the case another team doesn't give Maroon what he is looking for. The character of the team will take a big hit if they let him go.
