Camera settings, for distance

I try to get pics of the Turkey Vultures flying around, but besides having trouble to get focus on a small object, I know very little about settings.

Here's what I have/do;

Nikon D3200
Lens is Nikon DX 55-200mm.
I set the dial on the dude running, for action shots.


Here's the unedited pic I just took, of a Tky Vulture *about* 100 yards out.



Any hints or tips would be appreciated.
